Market OutlookPublished For the session53 min readby AlgoIndex Research Team
Gold Futures 4,150.0: Short 4,165 to 4,171 Into Thursday

December gold settled at 4,150.0 after Wednesday's high stopped 4.4 points under the 4,165 to 4,175 short band. Levels and a 4,165 to 4,171 short for Thursday.

At 4,160.6, Wednesday's high stopped 4.4 points short of 4,165, the bottom of the short band we set for the session. December gold never traded into 4,165 to 4,175. It marked a low of 4,122.3 and settled at 4,150.0, up 7.4 points or 0.18 percent from Tuesday's 4,142.6. The daily bar cannot show which extreme came first.

The dollar index rose 0.08 to 101.78 and the ten-year yield index climbed to 5.15 percent from 5.11 percent, so in the review's words gold's small gain came against a slightly firmer dollar and higher yields. The 38.3 point range was the narrowest since 01/14/26 in the provider's settlement series. The higher settle ended a run of two lower settles. Thursday's primary setup is another short, from 4,165 to 4,171, a band that holds Pivot R1 at 4,166.3 and the 18-day average crossing price at 4,168.7. The settle sits 15.0 points beneath it.

At a glance

December gold settled at 4,150.0, 5.7 points above the 4,144.3 Pivot Point and 16.3 beneath Pivot R1 at 4,166.3. Every settlement average sits above it, from the 5-day at 4,160.78 to the 200-day at 4,615.40. The primary setup is a short from 4,165 to 4,171, with one standard deviation resistance, Pivot R1, the MACD stall level and the 18-day crossing price inside the band, stop 4,184 above Pivot R2 at 4,182.6, targets 4,152, 4,136 and an extended 4,120. The band sits above the market. Target 1 sits 2.0 points above the settle. Negative direction leads on both directional windows and the composite reads "48% SELL". Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Wednesday.

Wednesday's 4,160.6 high stopped 4.4 points beneath the 4,165 to 4,175 short band

In Wednesday’s outlook we set a short from 4,165 to 4,175, stop 4,190, with targets at 4,150, 4,130 and an extended 4,110. Its status line put the contract at 4,142.6 at the Tuesday settle, 22.4 points beneath the band. Wednesday's bar, from the review and the dated 2026-10-21 row of the provider's daily record, opened at 4,143.4 at the Tuesday 6:00 PM ET reopen, 0.8 above Tuesday's settle. It marked a high of 4,160.6 and a low of 4,122.3 and settled at 4,150.0. The band never traded.

Under five points. That was the miss. The high stopped 4.4 beneath 4,165, 14.4 beneath the band top and 29.4 beneath the 4,190 stop. With the band never reached, the card's acceptance test, two consecutive 30-minute closes above 4,175, never came into play, and the settle finished 33.1 points beneath its invalidation line, a settle above two standard deviations resistance at 4,183.1. No fill and no result is asserted.

Prices did pass two of the card's target levels. The 4,150 first target sits between the 4,143.4 open and the 4,160.6 high, so it traded, and the low went 7.7 beneath the 4,130 second target. The extended 4,110 never traded; the low held 12.3 above it. With the band untouched, those prints carry no result for the card. The settle landed on the first target itself, 4,150.0, and finished 20.0 above the second.

Order is the missing piece. No intraday series was kept for Wednesday. The daily bar fixes the open, the two extremes and the settle, and nothing more. It cannot show whether the high or the low came first, or when either printed, so we make no claim about the path between them.

The path call held at both ends. Our Wednesday outlook weighted a hold between Pivot S2 at 4,104.4 and Pivot R2 at 4,194.0, with a rally toward the band that fails beneath two standard deviations resistance at 4,183.1 weighted above a break higher. The low held 17.9 points above Pivot S2. The high stopped 33.4 beneath Pivot R2, 22.5 beneath two deviations resistance, 7.7 beneath Pivot R1 at 4,168.3 and 9.2 beneath the 18-day crossing price at 4,169.8. The outlook's alternative, a renewed decline in the dollar and yields carrying gold back through Tuesday's 4,174.9 high, did not come about. Both rose, and the high stopped 14.3 beneath 4,174.9.

The range work mostly held. Our low-range case of 4,125 to 4,165 failed at the bottom, where the low went 2.7 points through it; the high stayed 4.4 inside its top. The most likely case of 4,105 to 4,180 contained the session, with 17.3 points to spare at the bottom and 19.4 at the top. So did the high-range case of 4,064 to 4,222 and the 4,063.5 to 4,221.7 average-true-range envelope. One deviation, 4,114.0 to 4,171.2, held with 8.3 to spare at the bottom and 10.6 at the top. Two and three deviations held too. The four session bands cannot be scored. Each depends on when a price printed, and the daily bar does not say.

The low went 1.2 points beneath the card's Pivot S1 at 4,123.5, and the settle finished 26.5 above it and 0.8 above the card's 4,149.2 Pivot Point. The macro override named a further decline in the dollar and yields, or a sharp safe-haven bid on a Gulf escalation. The dollar index rose by 0.08 instead, and the ten-year yield index rose to 5.15 percent. Gulf reports appeared on the news feed from 2:47 PM ET, statements carried by the news feed rather than events confirmed for this review. The stop never traded. We grade the card as written.

One row anchors the score. The dated 2026-10-21 row of the provider's daily record reads 4,143.4, 4,160.6, 4,122.3 and 4,150.0 on 143,504 contracts. The review states the same prices and volume. Wednesday's open interest was not yet reported. Tuesday's 2026-10-20 row was revised. It now carries 161,101 contracts against the preliminary 153,429 our Wednesday outlook carried, and open interest of 315,599, which that outlook listed as not yet reported. The 315,599 the review cites from the provider's overview is that Tuesday figure.

The 4,165 to 4,171 band, Pivot R1 at 4,166.3 and the 18-day crossing at 4,168.7

Resistance starts close. The 10/19 session low of 4,155.6 sits 5.6 points above the settle. The 9-day average crossing price at 4,160.0, the 10/19 settle of 4,160.1, Wednesday's 4,160.6 high and the 5-day average at 4,160.78 follow, all within a point of one another.

Then the band. The 9-day crossing price sits 5.0 beneath its bottom. One standard deviation resistance at 4,165.4 sits 0.4 inside it, the 9-day settlement average at 4,166.22 sits 1.22 inside, Pivot R1 at 4,166.3 sits 1.3 inside and the MACD stall level at 4,166.8 sits 1.8 inside. The 10/16 low of 4,167.5 sits 0.5 beneath the 4,168 midpoint, and the 18-day crossing price at 4,168.7 sits 0.7 above it. The 10/15 settle of 4,170.1 sits 0.9 beneath the 4,171 top.

Then the stop zone. Two standard deviations resistance at 4,171.8 sits 0.8 above the band top. Tuesday's 4,174.9 high, three standard deviations resistance at 4,176.6 and the 10/13 settle of 4,177.3 follow. The 10/16 settle of 4,181.1, Pivot R2 at 4,182.6 and the 20-day average at 4,182.81 sit 2.9, 1.4 and 1.19 beneath the 4,184 stop. The 10/12 settle of 4,190.6, the 10/14 high of 4,193.5 and the 10/15 high of 4,197.7 sit above it. Pivot R3 at 4,204.6 sits 20.6 above the stop. The 10/19 high of 4,211.2, the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low at 4,214.5, 64.5 above the settle, the 10/09 settle of 4,216.3 and the 10/16 high of 4,220.4 come next. The 50 percent retracement of the four-week range at 4,252.6 follows. The rest is distant. It takes in the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week high at 4,290.8, the 100-day at 4,297.22, the 40-day crossing at 4,303.9, the 38.2 percent retracement from the 13-week low at 4,321.7, the 50-day at 4,358.26, the 4,414.1 one-month high, the 200-day at 4,615.40, the 4,755.0 13-week high and the 5,781.8 52-week high.

Support begins with the Pivot Point at 4,144.3, 5.7 points beneath the settle. Wednesday's 4,143.4 open and Tuesday's 4,142.6 settle sit just under it. The published target price at 4,134.9 and one standard deviation support at 4,134.6 come next, then Tuesday's 4,130.1 low. Two standard deviations support at 4,128.2 and Pivot S1 at 4,128.0, 22.0 down, form the next pair, with three standard deviations support at 4,123.4, Wednesday's 4,122.3 low and the 10/15 low of 4,120.9 beneath. The 10/14 settle of 4,107.9 and Pivot S2 at 4,106.0 follow. The 10/14 low of 4,095.0, the one-month low at 4,091.2, 58.8 beneath the settle, and Pivot S3 at 4,089.7 are the deeper band. The 13-week low at 4,053.9 is the extended reference. The 52-week low of 4,015.6 closes the list.

Every average sits above the settle. The gaps run 10.78 points to the 5-day at 4,160.78, 16.22 to the 9-day at 4,166.22, 32.81 to the 20-day at 4,182.81, 208.26 to the 50-day at 4,358.26, 147.22 to the 100-day at 4,297.22 and 465.40 to the 200-day at 4,615.40. The 5-day rose 8.42 from 4,152.36 as the 10/14 settle of 4,107.9 left the window and Wednesday's 4,150.0 replaced it. The 20-day fell 8.42 from 4,191.23 as the 09/23 settle of 4,318.4 dropped out. The 50-day slipped 5.82 from 4,364.08. Older settlements explain the order. The 30 older ones in the 50-day window averaged 4,475.22, the 50 older ones in the 100-day window 4,236.18 and the 100 older ones in the 200-day window 4,933.58. Thursday's crossing prices are 4,160.0 for the 9-day, 4,168.7 for the 18-day and 4,303.9 for the 40-day.

Momentum sits in the lower half. Relative strength reads 41.54 on the 9-day, 41.08 on the 14-day and 42.12 on the 20-day. The 9-day raw stochastic reads 37.34 percent and the 14-day 35.04 percent. The 14-day %K at 35.58 percent sits beneath %D at 40.20 percent. Sellers lead on direction. On the 9-day, negative direction at 23.27 leads positive at 11.61 with the ADX at 26.09; on the 14-day, 22.42 leads 12.69 with the ADX at 21.35. Historic volatility reads 15.04 percent on the 9-day and 13.95 percent on the 14-day. These are the provider's published readings. The page was read at 6:23 PM ET, after the 6:00 PM ET reopen, so they may include the first minutes of the Thursday session.

The composite snapshot, read at 6:23 PM ET, reads "48% SELL", strength "Weak", direction "Strengthening", composite indicator "SELL". The short-term group reads "Average: 80% SELL", the medium-term "Average: 25% SELL" and the long-term "Average: HOLD". History: "56% SELL" yesterday, "80% SELL" last week and "HOLD" last month. The sell share eased in a day.

Wednesday's range was narrow. Its 38.3 points were 0.57 times the 14-day average daily range of 67.7, the narrowest range since the 38.0 points of 01/14/26. The bar printed a lower high and a lower low against Tuesday, by 14.3 and 7.8 points, and still settled higher. It closed 6.6 above its open. The settle at 72.3 percent of the range left an upper shadow of 10.6 points above the settle and a lower shadow of 21.1 beneath the open. The 4,122.3 low was the lowest since the 4,120.9 low of 10/15. Session highs over six sessions ran 4,193.5, 4,197.7, 4,220.4, 4,211.2, 4,174.9 and 4,160.6, three consecutive lower highs, and session lows 4,095.0, 4,120.9, 4,167.5, 4,155.6, 4,130.1 and 4,122.3.

The 14-day average true range stands at 76.2 points. The 9-day figures are 68.7 for average true range and 62.6 for average daily range, and the 20-day 82.3 and 72.1. One average true range either side of the settle spans 4,073.8 to 4,226.2. The deviation bands are tighter. Built from five settlements, they run 4,134.6 to 4,165.4, 4,128.2 to 4,171.8 and 4,123.4 to 4,176.6. They describe settlement dispersion only, and a headline gap can open outside any of them. Daily ranges over nine sessions ran 77.6, 64.2, 55.1, 98.5, 76.8, 52.9, 55.6, 44.8 and 38.3 points, and settlements ran 4,216.3, 4,190.6, 4,177.3, 4,107.9, 4,170.1, 4,181.1, 4,160.1, 4,142.6 and 4,150.0. Changes ran plus 59.3, minus 25.7, minus 13.3, minus 69.4, plus 62.2, plus 11.0, minus 21.0, minus 17.5 and plus 7.4. The one-month high of 4,414.1 sits 264.1 above the settle. No prior-quarter high or low was captured, so the 13-week extremes of 4,755.0 and 4,053.9 serve as the quarterly reference.

A firmer dollar, higher yields and a higher gold settle

Start with the headline. At 2:15 PM ET the macro feed carried "Gold rebounds above $4,130 as Oil retreats, Fed decision looms". It is a third-party headline about spot gold, not a measurement made for this review.

The dollar firmed. The dollar index closed at 101.78 in the provider's daily record, up 0.08 from Tuesday's 101.70, after trading between 101.64 and 101.84. Provider commentary attributed the dollar's support to a small rise in the ten-year yield and to safe-haven demand after the report on embassy departures.

Yields rose. The ten-year yield index traded between 5.08 and 5.15 percent and closed at 5.15 percent against 5.11 percent on Tuesday, and the thirty-year index closed at 5.44 percent against 5.42 percent. The 20-year Treasury auction drew a high yield of 5.469 percent against 5.420 percent previously and a bid-to-cover of 2.730 against 2.570, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. No inflation-protected yield series was captured. Real yields are not measured here.

The Fed meets next week. The next policy statement is scheduled for 2:00 PM ET on October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it. Provider commentary said markets price a 15 percent chance of a quarter-point rate increase at that meeting; that probability is the provider's, not a measurement made for this review. UK consumer prices printed at 3.5 percent against a 3.4 percent forecast, and New Zealand's consumer prices at 3.7 percent year on year against 3.8 percent, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed.

Gulf reports came late in the day. At 2:47 PM ET the news feed carried a report from US officials that the State Department was preparing ordered departures from US embassies across the Gulf. More followed after the close. From 4:52 PM ET to 4:58 PM ET it carried press reports, citing two US officials, that US troops and diplomats were moving out of posts in the region. Iranian statements carried by the feed included a threat at 4:39 PM ET against US political targets if strikes resume. Ukraine drew headlines too. On Ukraine, the feed carried at 11:26 AM ET a US official's statement that Russia accepted a proposal for a trilateral meeting, and from 3:16 PM ET to 3:17 PM ET reports of missile attacks on Kyiv. These are statements carried by the news feed rather than events confirmed for this review. No causal link to the gold price is asserted.

No structural demand figure was available. The news feed read for this review carried no central bank purchase figure and no Chinese demand item, so none is asserted. At 1:12 PM ET it carried a statement that China and Russia agreed to support firms expanding oil cooperation. No fund holdings series was captured.

Crude slipped. December WTI settled at 97.15, down 0.67 or 0.68 percent, while Brent's December contract settled at 108.82, up 0.03. Stocks rose. The S&P 500 cash index closed at 7,757.17, up 0.58 percent, and the volatility index closed at 16.68 against 17.31 on Tuesday. The other metals fell. December silver settled at 57.710, down 0.290, and December copper at 6.5795, down 0.0240. The gold-to-silver ratio rose to 71.91 from 71.42 on Tuesday.

Positioning data are thin. No weekly positioning report was captured, so no managed-money or commercial figure is asserted. Open interest on the December contract is shown at 315,599 on the provider's overview, the figure the provider's settlement record carries for Tuesday 10/20. Wednesday's open interest was not yet reported. Wednesday's volume was 143,504 contracts against 161,101 on Tuesday, down 17,597.

The fund console comes next. The gold fund's options console was read at 6:19 PM ET, with a page date of 2026-10-21. It shows a last-closing field of 377.7, which reflects Tuesday, and a current-price field of 379.48; the provider's daily record shows the fund closing Wednesday at 378.95 against 377.65 on Tuesday, up 0.34 percent. The console row shows call gamma of minus 454.5 million against put gamma of minus 448.51 million, modeled figures on a proxy. Both are negative. Call volume was 122.23 thousand against put volume of 75.54 thousand, an observation only, and the put-to-call open-interest ratio reads 0.49. One-month implied volatility of 19.89 percent sits beneath one-month realised volatility of 20.66 percent, with an implied-volatility rank of 7.54 percent and a skew rank of 44.80 percent. The console's options implied move is 4.74, about 1.25 percent of the 379.48 price field.

The console reports volume and modeled gamma without trade side or customer positioning, so these fields are recorded as observations only; no directional read and no level is drawn from them. Modeled gamma is a non-directional damping lens on a proxy, and options volume says nothing about direction or demand. The fund's high and low volatility point fields were not used, and no fund level is translated into a futures price.

The desk note, the 5:42 PM ET Wednesday edition, does not discuss gold. The review names the dollar, yield and policy complex as the primary edge for gold.

The trade map for Thursday

The primary setup is a short. Its band runs 4,165 to 4,171, around Pivot R1 at 4,166.3 and the 18-day average crossing price at 4,168.7. Wednesday printed a lower high and a lower low. The settle sits beneath every settlement average from the 5-day to the 200-day, and negative direction leads on the 9-day and 14-day directional systems. The composite reads "48% SELL" with the composite indicator at "SELL", against "56% SELL" yesterday, "80% SELL" last week and "HOLD" last month. Four anchors sit inside the band. One standard deviation resistance sits 0.4 above its bottom, Pivot R1 1.3 above it and the MACD stall level 1.8 above it, and the 18-day crossing price sits 0.7 above the 4,168 midpoint. Risk sits above Pivot R2. The 4,184 stop clears Pivot R2 at 4,182.6 by 1.4 and three standard deviations resistance at 4,176.6 by 7.4. Targets step down to 4,152, 2.0 above the settle, then 4,136, 1.1 above the published target price at 4,134.9 and 1.4 above one standard deviation support at 4,134.6, and an extended 4,120, 2.3 beneath Wednesday's 4,122.3 low. The first target sits above the settle. The review flags the evidence against it. The settle finished in the upper part of the range, and Gulf headlines could lift safe-haven demand. So the review calls this an analyst judgment that rallies stall beneath the 18-day crossing price, with no measured edge behind it.

Primary setup for Thursday
Direction
Short
Entry Zone
4,165 to 4,171
Stop Loss
4,184, above Pivot R2 at 4,182.6 and three standard deviations resistance at 4,176.6
Target 1
4,152, 2.0 points above Wednesday's 4,150.0 settle
Target 2
4,136, above the published target price at 4,134.9 and one standard deviation support at 4,134.6
Target 3 (extended)
4,120, 2.3 points beneath Wednesday's 4,122.3 low
Risk-to-Reward
Approximately 1:1 to T1, 1:2 to T2 and 1:3 to T3, measured from the 4,168 midpoint against the 4,184 stop, a risk of 16 points
Invalidation
A settle above Pivot R2 at 4,182.6 negates the thesis. Short of that, the edge is removed by acceptance above the entry band, defined as two consecutive 30-minute closes above 4,171; a touch alone does not remove it
Macro override
A sharp safe-haven bid on a confirmed Gulf escalation, or a decline in the dollar and yields, would support gold. In that scenario a move through the 4,184 stop removes the setup, and Pivot R3 at 4,204.6 and the 38.2 percent retracement at 4,214.5 become the references within one 14-day average true range of 76.2 points of the 4,184 stop (20.6 and 30.5 points beyond it)
Status at the Wednesday settle
4,150.0, 15.0 points beneath the band; the band sits above the market, and Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Wednesday

Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Wednesday and quoted 4,155.4 at 6:22 PM ET, after the evening press reports of US troop and diplomatic moves in the region. Reopened-session quotes are not settlements. The overview's open, high and low of 4,159.0, 4,164.3 and 4,154.7 belong to the new Thursday session, and the chart showed 4,153.7 at 6:26 PM ET. The review's night bias is neutral above the Pivot Point at 4,144.3. Its expected Globex band runs roughly 4,130 to 4,172. London follows at roughly 4,128 to 4,176, neutral to lower beneath Pivot R1 at 4,166.3, with three standard deviations resistance at 4,176.6 just above that band. The morning band is wider. It runs 4,106 to 4,183, with Pivot S2 at 4,106.0 at its bottom and Pivot R2 at 4,182.6 near its top, and the afternoon 4,100 to 4,190. For the full session the review sets a low-range case of 4,128 to 4,172, a most likely case of 4,106 to 4,183 and a high-range case of 4,074 to 4,226.

The calendar starts Wednesday night. The President is listed to speak at 7:00 PM ET and the Bank of Korea rate decision at 9:00 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Thursday starts early. On Thursday the Swiss central bank's meeting minutes are listed at 3:30 AM ET, the UK industrial orders survey at 6:00 AM ET and the Turkish central bank decision at 7:00 AM ET, all per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Claims come next. Weekly jobless claims are listed at 8:30 AM ET with a forecast of 200,000, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Euro-area consumer confidence is listed at 10:00 AM ET and a 5-year inflation-protected Treasury auction at 1:00 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. In the review's judgment real-yield direction after that auction is the main afternoon influence.

Globex reopens at 6:00 PM ET on Thursday. Australian flash purchasing managers' surveys are listed at 6:00 PM ET and Japan's consumer prices at 7:30 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, ahead of Friday's flash surveys in Europe and the US. Next week holds the Fed. The FOMC statement is scheduled for 2:00 PM ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it. The calendar lists no entry for Thursday, October 22, 2026. In the review's judgment the first-order influence for gold on Thursday is the yield and dollar response to the 8:30 AM ET jobless claims, listed by the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, with Gulf headlines the unscheduled risk.

One path is weighted. In the review's analyst judgment the most probable path holds the contract between Pivot S2 at 4,106.0 and Pivot R2 at 4,182.6. A rally toward the 4,165 to 4,171 band that stalls beneath the 18-day crossing price at 4,168.7 is weighted above a sustained break higher. No measured frequency backs it. The alternative that would invalidate this reading is a safe-haven bid on a confirmed escalation in the Gulf that carries the contract through Pivot R2 toward Pivot R3 at 4,204.6. In the review's reading, Wednesday's higher settle off a lower low, the settle at 72.3 percent of the range and the "Strengthening" direction reading make a recovery a live alternative.

Wednesday's high stopped 4.4 points under one short band, and its settle finished 15.0 points beneath the next.

1. Executive Summary

The December gold contract settled at 4,150.0 on Wednesday, up 7.4 or 0.18 percent from Tuesday's settle of 4,142.6, after trading between 4,160.6 and 4,122.3, a 38.3 point daily range. The settle finished at 72.3 percent of the range, and the 38.3 point range was 0.57 times the published 14-day average daily range of 67.7 points. Wednesday printed a lower high and a lower low against Tuesday, yet settled higher, ending a run of two lower settles.

The 38.3 point range was the narrowest daily range since the 38.0 point range of 01/14/26 in the provider's settlement series, and the 4,122.3 low was the lowest low since the 4,120.9 low of 10/15. The settle sits beneath every settlement average from the 5-day to the 200-day, negative direction leads on both directional systems, and the composite snapshot captured for this review reads Overall Average "48% SELL", against Yesterday "56% SELL".

The dollar index closed at 101.78 against 101.70 on Tuesday and the ten-year yield index at 5.15 percent against 5.11 percent, so gold's small gain came against a slightly firmer dollar and higher yields. UK consumer prices printed at 3.5 percent against a 3.4 percent forecast and the 20-year Treasury auction drew a high yield of 5.469 percent against 5.420 percent previously, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Provider commentary said markets price a 15 percent chance of a quarter-point rate increase at the October 27 to 28 policy meeting.

After the close the news feed carried press reports that US troops and diplomats were moving out of posts in the Middle East, and the reopened session quoted the contract at 4,155.4 at 6:22 PM ET. The published 14-day average true range is 76.2 points. The Primary Setup below is a short from the 4,165 to 4,171 band around Pivot R1 at 4,166.3, stopped at 4,184 above Pivot R2 at 4,182.6, with objectives at 4,152, 4,136 and an extended 4,120.

2. Price Action & Technical Structure

2.1 Intraday and Session Review

The Wednesday session opened at 4,143.4 at the Tuesday 6:00 PM ET reopen, 0.8 points above Tuesday's settle, marked a daily high of 4,160.6 and a daily low of 4,122.3, and settled at 4,150.0. No intraday series was kept for this session, so this review does not describe the order in which the high and the low printed, and no timed price path is asserted; the daily bar alone fixes the open, the extremes and the settle.

This review records only that the 4,160.6 high and the 4,122.3 low both belong to Wednesday's completed session and that the settle sits 27.7 points above the low and 10.6 points beneath the high.

Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Wednesday for the Thursday session, so the open, high and low shown on the provider's overview, 4,159.0, 4,164.3 and 4,154.7, belong to the new Thursday session and are not Wednesday's range. The provider's last quote at 6:22 PM ET was 4,155.4, and the chart showed 4,153.7 at 6:26 PM ET; these are reopened-session quotes, not settlements.

Wednesday's completed-session extremes are taken from the settlement row, and they are also the completed-session inputs behind the published pivot ladder rather than an independently read bar. Pivot R3 at 4,204.6 minus Pivot S3 at 4,089.7, divided by three, returns 38.3, and Pivot R2 at 4,182.6 minus Pivot S2 at 4,106.0, divided by two, returns the same 38.3. Three times the Pivot Point of 4,144.3 less the 4,150.0 settle gives a high plus low sum of 8,282.9, which the pair of 4,160.6 and 4,122.3 reproduces exactly, and that pair reproduces all seven published rungs.

Independent corroboration: the provider's settlement row and the chart's completed daily bar for the continuous contract carry the same 4,143.4 open, 4,160.6 high, 4,122.3 low and 4,150.0 settle.

2.2 Daily Structure

Wednesday printed a lower high and a lower low: the 4,160.6 high sits 14.3 points beneath Tuesday's 4,174.9, and the 4,122.3 low sits 7.8 points beneath Tuesday's 4,130.1. The settle above the 4,143.4 open leaves a body of 6.6 points, an upper shadow of 10.6 points above the settle and a lower shadow of 21.1 points beneath the open.

Settlements over the last nine sessions ran 4,216.3, 4,190.6, 4,177.3, 4,107.9, 4,170.1, 4,181.1, 4,160.1 and 4,142.6 before Wednesday's 4,150.0. The sequence of session highs over the last six sessions reads 4,193.5, 4,197.7, 4,220.4, 4,211.2, 4,174.9 and 4,160.6, three consecutive lower highs, and the sequence of session lows reads 4,095.0, 4,120.9, 4,167.5, 4,155.6, 4,130.1 and 4,122.3.

The one-month high of 4,414.1 and the one-month low of 4,091.2 frame the recent swing, with the settle 58.8 points above that low. The 13-week low of 4,053.9 and the 52-week low of 4,015.6 sit beneath, and the 13-week high of 4,755.0 and the 52-week high of 5,781.8 sit far above. No prior-quarter high or low was captured for this review, so the 13-week extremes serve as the available quarterly reference.

2.3 4-Hour and Swing Structure

Daily ranges for the last nine sessions ran 77.6, 64.2, 55.1, 98.5, 76.8, 52.9, 55.6, 44.8 and 38.3, so each of the last two sessions posted a narrower range than the one before. The settlement changes over the same nine sessions read plus 59.3, minus 25.7, minus 13.3, minus 69.4, plus 62.2, plus 11.0, minus 21.0, minus 17.5 and plus 7.4.

The retracement grid published for Thursday places the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low at 4,214.5, the 50 percent retracement of the four-week range at 4,252.6 and the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week high at 4,290.8, all above the settle. The 38.2 percent retracement from the 13-week low sits at 4,321.7. No four-hour series was captured for this review, so swing structure here rests on daily bars only.

2.4 Moving Averages

The averages cited in this subsection were computed for this review from the provider's daily settlement series for the December contract, which holds 259 completed sessions through Wednesday; the partial Thursday row returned after the 6:00 PM ET reopen was dropped before counting. The 5-day average stands at 4,160.78, the 9-day at 4,166.22, the 20-day at 4,182.81, the 50-day at 4,358.26, the 100-day at 4,297.22 and the 200-day at 4,615.40.

The 4,150.0 settle sits 10.78 points beneath the 5-day average, 16.22 points beneath the 9-day, 32.81 points beneath the 20-day and 208.26 points beneath the 50-day. The 5-day average rose 8.42 points from Tuesday's 4,152.36, because the 10/14 settle of 4,107.9 left the window and was replaced by 4,150.0. The 20-day fell 8.42 points from 4,191.23, because the 09/23 settle of 4,318.4 left that window, and the 50-day fell 5.82 points from 4,364.08.

The 20-day average sits beneath the 50-day because the last 20 settlements averaged 4,182.81 against 4,358.26 for the full 50, which means the 30 older settlements in the 50-day window averaged higher, at 4,475.22. The 50-day sits above the 100-day because the 50 older settlements in the 100-day window averaged lower, at 4,236.18, and the 100-day sits beneath the 200-day because the 100 older settlements in the 200-day window averaged higher, at 4,933.58. The projection grid gives the prices at which each average would be crossed on Thursday: 4,160.0 for the 9-day, 4,168.7 for the 18-day and 4,303.9 for the 40-day.

2.5 Oscillator and Trend Readings

The oscillator figures below are as published on the provider's technical page, read at 6:23 PM ET after the 6:00 PM ET reopen, so they may include the first minutes of the Thursday session rather than the settle alone; they are the provider's published readings, not computations made for this review. The 9-day relative strength reads 41.54, the 14-day relative strength 41.08 and the 20-day relative strength 42.12.

The 9-day raw stochastic reads 37.34 percent and the 14-day raw stochastic 35.04 percent, while the 14-day stochastic %K reads 35.58 percent and the 14-day stochastic %D 40.20 percent, so %K sits beneath %D in the lower half of the range.

The 9-day directional index ADX reads 26.09 with the 9-day +DI at 11.61 and the 9-day -DI at 23.27; the 14-day directional index ADX reads 21.35 with the 14-day +DI at 12.69 and the 14-day -DI at 22.42, so negative direction leads on both. The 9-day historic volatility reads 15.04 percent and the 14-day historic volatility 13.95 percent.

The composite multi-indicator snapshot captured for this review at 6:23 PM ET reads, verbatim: Overall Average "48% SELL", Current Strength "Weak", Current Direction "Strengthening", Composite Indicator "SELL". The horizon groups read short-term "Average: 80% SELL", medium-term "Average: 25% SELL" and long-term "Average: HOLD". The snapshot comparisons read Yesterday "56% SELL", Last Week "80% SELL" and Last Month "HOLD".

2.6 Volatility and Expected Range

The published 14-day average true range stands at 76.2 points and the 14-day average daily range at 67.7 points; the 9-day average true range is 68.7 with a 9-day average daily range of 62.6, and the 20-day average true range is 82.3 with a 20-day average daily range of 72.1. Wednesday's 38.3 point range was 0.57 times the 14-day average daily range.

Adding and subtracting the 14-day average true range of 76.2 points from the 4,150.0 settle frames Thursday between 4,073.8 and 4,226.2. The published standard-deviation bands are built from five settlements: one deviation spans 4,134.6 to 4,165.4, two spans 4,128.2 to 4,171.8 and three spans 4,123.4 to 4,176.6. These bands describe settlement dispersion, not intraday reach, and a headline gap can open outside any of them.

3. Key Levels

3.1 Resistance

Above the 4,150.0 settle and the 10/19 low of 4,155.6, the first listed overhead reference is the 9-day average crossing price at 4,160.0, followed by Wednesday's 4,160.6 high, one standard deviation resistance at 4,165.4 and Pivot R1 at 4,166.3. The MACD stall level at 4,166.8, the 18-day average crossing price at 4,168.7 and two standard deviations resistance at 4,171.8 come next, then Tuesday's 4,174.9 high and three standard deviations resistance at 4,176.6. Pivot R2 at 4,182.6 and Pivot R3 at 4,204.6 form the extended band, with the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low at 4,214.5 above.

3.2 Support

Beneath the settle sits the Pivot Point at 4,144.3, then Tuesday's 4,142.6 settle, the published target price at 4,134.9 and one standard deviation support at 4,134.6. Two standard deviations support at 4,128.2 and Pivot S1 at 4,128.0 follow, then three standard deviations support at 4,123.4 and Wednesday's 4,122.3 low. Pivot S2 at 4,106.0, the one-month low at 4,091.2 and Pivot S3 at 4,089.7 form the deeper band, with the 13-week low at 4,053.9 the extended reference.

4. Macro Drivers

4.1 Dollar and Real Yields

The dollar index closed at 101.78 in the provider's daily record, up 0.08 from Tuesday's 101.70, after trading between 101.64 and 101.84. Provider commentary attributed the dollar's support to a small rise in the ten-year yield and to safe-haven demand after the report on embassy departures.

No inflation-protected yield series was captured for this review, so the move in real yields is not measured here.

4.2 Fed and Monetary Policy

The next policy statement is scheduled for 2:00 PM ET on October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it. Provider commentary said markets price a 15 percent chance of a quarter-point rate increase at that meeting; that probability is the provider's, not a measurement made for this review. UK consumer prices printed at 3.5 percent against a 3.4 percent forecast, and New Zealand's consumer prices at 3.7 percent year on year against 3.8 percent, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The macro feed headline at 2:15 PM ET, "Gold rebounds above $4,130 as Oil retreats, Fed decision looms", is a third-party headline about spot gold, not a measurement made for this review.

4.3 Geopolitical Backdrop

The news feed carried at 2:47 PM ET a report from US officials that the State Department was preparing ordered departures from US embassies across the Gulf, and at 4:52 PM ET to 4:58 PM ET the news feed carried press reports, citing two US officials, that US troops and diplomats were moving out of posts in the region. Iranian statements carried by the feed included a threat at 4:39 PM ET against US political targets if strikes resume. On Ukraine, the feed carried at 11:26 AM ET a US official's statement that Russia accepted a proposal for a trilateral meeting, and at 3:16 PM ET to 3:17 PM ET reports of missile attacks on Kyiv. These are statements carried by the news feed rather than events confirmed for this review.

4.4 China and Structural Demand (Central Bank Buying, PBOC, ETF Flows)

The news feed read for this review carried no central bank purchase figure and no Chinese demand item, so none is asserted. The news feed carried at 1:12 PM ET a statement that China and Russia agreed to support firms expanding oil cooperation. No fund holdings series was captured for this review.

4.5 Energy and Cross-Asset

December WTI settled at 97.15, down 0.67, and Brent's December contract at 108.82, up 0.03. The S&P 500 cash index closed at 7,757.17, up 0.58 percent, and the volatility index closed at 16.68 against 17.31 on Tuesday. December silver settled at 57.710, down 0.290, and December copper at 6.5795, down 0.0240, so the gold to silver ratio stands at 71.91 against 71.42 on Tuesday.

4.6 Institutional Positioning (COT, ETF Holdings, Speculator Length)

No weekly positioning report was captured for this review, so no managed-money or commercial figure is asserted. Open interest on the December contract is shown at 315,599 on the provider's overview, the figure the provider's settlement record carries for Tuesday 10/20, and Wednesday's volume was 143,504 contracts against 161,101 on Tuesday in the provider's settlement record.

5. Gold Fund Options Context (Proxy)

The gold fund's options console was read at 6:19 PM ET with a page date of 2026-10-21. It shows a last-closing field of 377.7, which reflects Tuesday, and a current-price field of 379.48; the provider's daily record shows the fund closing Wednesday at 378.95 against 377.65 on Tuesday. The console row shows modeled call gamma of minus 454.5 million against put gamma of minus 448.51 million, call volume of 122.23 thousand against put volume of 75.54 thousand, and a put-to-call open-interest ratio of 0.49.

One-month implied volatility of 19.89 percent sits beneath one-month realised volatility of 20.66 percent, with an implied-volatility rank of 7.54 percent and a skew rank of 44.80 percent; the console's options implied move is 4.74. The console reports volume and modeled gamma without trade side or customer positioning, so these fields are recorded as observations only; no directional read and no level is drawn from them.

The desk note read for this review, the 5:42 PM ET Wednesday edition, does not discuss gold. No fund level is translated into a futures price, and the console's high and low volatility point fields were not used.

The proxy caveat stands in any case: the gold fund is a proxy for the futures contract, used qualitatively only, and its levels are never translated into futures prices. Primary edge for gold is the dollar, yield and policy complex in section 4.

6. Forecast

6.1 Night Session (6:00 PM ET Wednesday to 3:00 AM ET Thursday, Globex/Asia)

Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Wednesday and quoted the December contract at 4,155.4 at 6:22 PM ET, after the evening press reports of US troop and diplomatic moves in the region. The President is listed to speak at 7:00 PM ET and the Bank of Korea rate decision at 9:00 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Bias neutral above the Pivot Point at 4,144.3, expected Globex band roughly 4,130 to 4,172.

6.2 London Session (3:00 AM to 8:00 AM ET Thursday)

The Swiss central bank's meeting minutes are listed at 3:30 AM ET and the UK industrial orders survey at 6:00 AM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Bias neutral to lower beneath Pivot R1 at 4,166.3, expected band roughly 4,128 to 4,176, with three standard deviations resistance at 4,176.6 just above that band.

6.3 Morning Session (9:30 AM to 12:00 PM ET Thursday, US Open)

Weekly jobless claims are listed at 8:30 AM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, ahead of the cash open, and euro-area consumer confidence is listed at 10:00 AM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Expected band roughly 4,106 to 4,183, with Pivot S2 at 4,106.0 beneath and Pivot R2 at 4,182.6 above.

6.4 Afternoon Session (12:00 PM to 4:00 PM ET Thursday)

A 5-year inflation-protected Treasury auction is listed at 1:00 PM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, and in this review's judgment real-yield direction after that auction is the main afternoon influence. Expected band roughly 4,100 to 4,190.

6.5 Night Session Forward (6:00 PM ET Thursday)

Globex reopens at 6:00 PM ET on Thursday. Australian flash purchasing managers' surveys are listed at 6:00 PM ET and Japan's consumer prices at 7:30 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, ahead of Friday's flash surveys in Europe and the US.

6.6 Expected Range (Thursday Full Session)

Low-range scenario: 4,128 to 4,172

Mid-range scenario (most likely): 4,106 to 4,183

High-range scenario: 4,074 to 4,226

6.7 Most Likely Path

In this review's analyst judgment the most probable path holds the contract between Pivot S2 at 4,106.0 and Pivot R2 at 4,182.6, with a rally toward the 4,165 to 4,171 band that stalls beneath the 18-day average crossing price at 4,168.7 weighted above a sustained break higher. The settle sits beneath every settlement average from the 5-day to the 200-day, negative direction leads on both directional systems, the session highs have fallen for three sessions, and the composite reads Overall Average "48% SELL".

The alternative that would invalidate this reading is a safe-haven bid on a confirmed escalation in the Gulf that carries the contract through Pivot R2 at 4,182.6 toward Pivot R3 at 4,204.6. In this review's reading, Wednesday's higher settle off a lower low, the settle in the upper part of the range and the Current Direction reading of "Strengthening" make a recovery a live alternative.

7. Thursday Economic Calendar

Wednesday's releases are complete. UK consumer prices printed at 2:00 AM ET at 3.5 percent, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The official weekly petroleum status report was scheduled for 10:30 AM ET on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, as the calendar lists it. The 20-year Treasury auction drew a high yield of 5.469 percent at 1:00 PM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. New Zealand's consumer prices printed at 5:45 PM ET at 3.7 percent year on year, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed.

On Wednesday evening the President is listed to speak at 7:00 PM ET and the Bank of Korea rate decision at 9:00 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. On Thursday the Swiss central bank's meeting minutes are listed at 3:30 AM ET, the UK industrial orders survey at 6:00 AM ET and the Turkish central bank decision at 7:00 AM ET, all per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Weekly jobless claims are listed at 8:30 AM ET, with a forecast of 200,000 on the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, euro-area consumer confidence at 10:00 AM ET and a 5-year inflation-protected Treasury auction at 1:00 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed.

Later in the window, the FOMC statement is scheduled for 2:00 PM ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it. The calendar lists no entry for Thursday, October 22, 2026. In this review's judgment the first-order influence for gold on Thursday is the yield and dollar response to the 8:30 AM ET jobless claims, listed by the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, with Gulf headlines the unscheduled risk.

8. Primary Trade Setup

Direction: Short

Rationale: Wednesday printed a lower high and a lower low, the settle sits beneath every settlement average from the 5-day to the 200-day, negative direction leads on the 9-day and 14-day directional systems, and the composite snapshot captured for this review reads Overall Average "48% SELL" with Composite Indicator "SELL", against Yesterday "56% SELL", Last Week "80% SELL" and Last Month "HOLD". A rally into Pivot R1 at 4,166.3 and the 18-day crossing price at 4,168.7 offers a short with a defined risk point above Pivot R2 at 4,182.6. The settle finished in the upper part of the range and Gulf headlines could lift safe-haven demand, so the setup is an analyst judgment that rallies stall beneath the 18-day crossing price, not a measured edge.

Entry Zone: 4,165 to 4,171

Stop Loss: 4,184 (above Pivot R2 at 4,182.6 and three standard deviations resistance at 4,176.6)

Target 1 (T1): 4,152 (just above Wednesday's 4,150.0 settle)

Target 2 (T2): 4,136 (above the published target price at 4,134.9 and one standard deviation support at 4,134.6)

Target 3 (T3, extended): 4,120 (beneath Wednesday's 4,122.3 low)

Risk-to-Reward: Approximately 1:1 to T1, 1:2 to T2, 1:3 to T3

Invalidation: A settle above Pivot R2 at 4,182.6 negates the thesis. Short of that, the edge is removed by acceptance above the entry band rather than by a touch, defined as two consecutive 30-minute closes above 4,171.

Macro override: A sharp safe-haven bid on a confirmed Gulf escalation, or a decline in the dollar and yields, would support gold. In that scenario a move through the 4,184 stop removes the setup, and Pivot R3 at 4,204.6 and the 38.2 percent retracement at 4,214.5 become the references within one 14-day average true range of 76.2 points of the 4,184 stop (20.6 and 30.5 points beyond it).

Sources and methodology

This outlook is built from our session review of the December gold contract, the December ’26 contract, prepared after Wednesday's close on October 21, 2026 for the Thursday, October 22, 2026 session. Wednesday's completed extremes are the inputs behind the published pivot ladder for Thursday: Pivot R3 at 4,204.6 less Pivot S3 at 4,089.7, divided by three, and Pivot R2 at 4,182.6 less Pivot S2 at 4,106.0, divided by two, both return 38.3, and three times the 4,144.3 Pivot Point less the settle gives 8,282.9, the sum of the 4,160.6 high and the 4,122.3 low. The provider's settlement row and the chart's completed Wednesday bar carry the same extremes, and the chart's 4,153.7 last, up 0.09 percent, reproduces the 4,150.0 previous close. Only those figures, the dated 2026-10-21 row of the provider's daily record and the review's statements are used to grade Wednesday's card. No intraday series was kept for Wednesday, so no statement here places the high or the low in time. Wednesday's session opened at the Tuesday 6:00 PM ET reopen. Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Wednesday, so the open, high and low displayed on the provider's overview after that, 4,159.0, 4,164.3 and 4,154.7, belong to the Thursday session and are not used as Wednesday's range.

Tuesday's 2026-10-20 row has been revised since our Wednesday outlook: volume now reads 161,101 contracts against the preliminary 153,429, and open interest 315,599, which that outlook listed as not yet reported; Tuesday's prices are unchanged. The review's open-interest figure of 315,599, taken from the provider's overview, is that 2026-10-20 figure. Wednesday's open interest was not yet reported. The moving averages were computed from the provider's daily settlement series of 259 completed sessions through Wednesday; the oscillators are cited as published, read at 6:23 PM ET after the reopen, and the composite strings are quoted verbatim. The gold fund is a proxy used qualitatively; its console carries no trade side, its gamma figures are modeled, its high and low volatility point fields were not used, and no fund level is translated into a futures price. The percent changes for the dollar index, silver, copper, December WTI, Brent and the gold fund are computed from the stated closes and changes. Scenario ranges are analyst judgment, and items marked unconfirmed come from the news-feed calendar or the news feed.

Wednesday’s outlook for this contract is here, and the crude oil contract’s Wednesday outlook covers the December WTI contract, which settled at 97.15 on Wednesday, down 0.68 percent. Outlooks for ES, NQ, GC and CL are collected on the market outlook page, and our forward trading record is on the performance statement.
