S&P Futures 7,800.25: Long 7,760 to 7,768 at Pivot S1

December S&P futures settled at 7,800.25, up 45.00 with a higher high and higher low. Levels, the 7,760 to 7,768 long and Thursday's calendar.

At 6:24 PM ET on Wednesday the reopened Globex session quoted the December S&P 500 contract at 7,782.75, 17.50 points beneath Wednesday’s 7,800.25 settle. That is a reopened-session quote, and the settlement stands. It came after results the news feed carried after the close from a social-media company, an electric-vehicle maker, a computing-services company and a chipmaker, each above estimates on earnings per share. Thursday’s long zone, 7,760 to 7,768, sits 14.75 points beneath that quote. Pivot S1 at 7,763.42 sits inside it.

Wednesday rose on both ends again. December E-mini futures settled at 7,800.25, up 45.00 points or 0.58 percent, after a 61.25 point session from 7,751.00 to 7,812.25. Higher high, higher low. The high sat 20.75 points over Tuesday’s 7,791.50 and the low 46.50 points over Tuesday’s 7,704.50. It was the third higher settle in a row and the highest settle since the 7,855.75 of 10/13. The settle finished at 80.4 percent of the range, which ran 0.77 times the 14-day average daily range of 79.41 points. The S&P 500 cash index closed at 7,757.17, up 44.60 or 0.58 percent. Technology led. The Nasdaq-100 rose 1.13 percent and the semiconductor index 1.97 percent, while the NYSE composite gained 0.26 percent and the Dow 0.69 percent.

At a glance

December S&P 500 futures settled at 7,800.25 on Wednesday. That sits above every settlement average from the 5-day at 7,757.05 to the 200-day at 7,407.66, and 12.42 points above the 7,787.83 Pivot Point. The primary setup is a long from 7,760 to 7,768 around Pivot S1 at 7,763.42. The stop is 7,740. It sits beneath two standard deviations support at 7,744.04 and the 7,743.08 conversion of the desk note’s 7,700 support, and the targets are 7,788, 7,812 and an extended 7,836. The first target sits 12.25 points beneath the settle, and the band top 32.25 beneath it. Per the desk note’s model levels, the 7,757.17 cash close sits 7.17 points above the 7,750 modeled volatility threshold (ES pair 7,792.45) and 90.17 above the 7,667 modeled gamma-flip level (ES pair 7,709.45). In the review’s judgment the first-order influence for Thursday is the cash-session reaction to the after-close earnings releases.

Wednesday’s 7,812.25 high stopped 17.75 points short of the 7,830 to 7,840 band

In Wednesday’s outlook we set a short from 7,830 to 7,840. Its stop sat at 7,860. The targets were 7,810, 7,785 and an extended 7,760. Wednesday’s completed bar, from the review and the dated 2026-10-21 row, opened at 7,785.00 at the Tuesday 6:00 PM ET reopen, marked a high of 7,812.25 and a low of 7,751.00, and settled at 7,800.25. The band never traded. The high stopped 17.75 points beneath the 7,830 band bottom and 47.75 beneath the stop. No fill and no result is asserted.

So the card never engaged. The bar still crossed its target levels. The 7,812.25 high ran 2.25 points over the 7,810 first target, the 7,785.00 open sat exactly on the 7,785 second target and the 7,751.00 low ran 9.00 points under the 7,760 extended target. With the band untouched, those prints carry no result for the card. The order cannot be shown either. No intraday series is available for Wednesday, so the daily bar fixes the open, the two extremes and the settle and nothing in between.

The invalidation was not triggered. The card negated its thesis on a settle above Pivot R2 at 7,837.42, and the 7,800.25 settle finished 37.17 points beneath it; the high stopped 25.17 short of that line. The card’s acceptance test, two consecutive 30-minute closes above 7,840, needs 30-minute bars. None exist for Wednesday. The daily bar still answers it. The high stayed 27.75 points beneath 7,840, so no close above that level could print.

The macro override named two legs. The first was a strong earnings-driven rally in the largest technology names. The cash indexes showed technology leading: the Nasdaq-100 rose 1.13 percent and the semiconductor index 1.97 percent, and the desk note put the largest technology names up about 1 percent. The second leg was a confirmed de-escalation in the Gulf. The review records none; its Gulf items are statements carried by the news feed. The override’s scenario needed a move through the 7,860 stop, and the high stayed 47.75 points beneath it. Its references, Pivot R3 at 7,883.33 and the one-month high at 7,897.50, sat 71.08 and 85.25 points above the high.

Our full-day ranges mostly held. The low-range case of 7,755 to 7,815 lost its bottom by 4.00 points while its top held by 2.75. The most likely 7,725 to 7,840 held the whole session, 26.00 above its bottom and 27.75 beneath its top, and the high-range 7,674 to 7,884 held with room on both sides. The session bands are another matter. The Globex band of 7,755 to 7,815 and the London band of 7,750 to 7,820 cannot be graded, because the daily bar cannot place either extreme in a session. The whole range fits inside the morning band of 7,725 to 7,840 and the afternoon band of 7,710 to 7,845. That is all the bar shows.

The weighted path kept its frame. Wednesday’s outlook expected a hold between Pivot S1 at 7,709.33 and Pivot R3 at 7,883.33, and the session stayed inside, 41.67 points above the bottom and 71.08 beneath the top. It weighted an extension toward the band that fails beneath the 7,842.68 conversion of the desk note’s 7,800 resistance. That test never came. The named alternative, a sustained advance through Pivot R2 at 7,837.42, did not print either; the high finished 25.17 beneath R2. Older levels on the way up did trade. The high cleared Pivot R1 at 7,796.33 by 15.92 points and two standard deviations resistance at 7,802.40 by 9.85, and stopped 0.75 beneath three standard deviations resistance at 7,813.00. We grade the card as written. The band never traded, the stop stayed untouched, and the settle finished 29.75 points beneath the band.

Pivot S1 at 7,763.42, the 7,760 to 7,768 band and the 7,740 stop

The basis widened slightly. Wednesday’s 7,800.25 settle less the 7,757.17 cash close measures 43.08 points, against 42.68 on Tuesday, and every cash equivalent in this article uses the new figure. The desk note keeps its own 42.45 point offset, so its published futures pairs differ: 8,142.45 for the 8,100 call-side ceiling, 8,042.45 for the 8,000 gamma concentration, 7,792.45 for the 7,750 modeled volatility threshold, 7,709.45 for the 7,667 modeled gamma-flip level and 7,692.45 for the 7,650 put-side support base.

Resistance starts 2.83 points up. The 7,803.08 conversion of the desk note’s 7,760 resistance sits there, then the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week high at 7,811.65 and Wednesday’s 7,812.25 high (cash 7,769.17). The published target price at 7,819.56 (cash 7,776.48) closes that first group, 16.48 points above the conversion. Pivot R1 at 7,824.67 (cash 7,781.59) and one standard deviation resistance at 7,839.99 (cash 7,796.91) come next. The 7,843.08 conversion of the desk note’s 7,800 resistance follows, then Pivot R2 at 7,849.08 (cash 7,806.00) and two standard deviations resistance at 7,856.46 (cash 7,813.38).

The extended band sits higher. Three standard deviations resistance at 7,869.09 (cash 7,826.01) and the 7,880.05 top of the one-range frame lead it, then Pivot R3 at 7,885.92 (cash 7,842.84). The one-month high of 7,897.50 (cash 7,854.42) and the 52-week and 13-week high of 7,905.00 (cash 7,861.92) follow. The last sits 104.75 points or 1.34 percent above the settle. The 8,042.45 concentration pair (cash 8,000) and the 8,142.45 ceiling pair (cash 8,100) complete the list.

Support starts 7.80 points down. The 7,792.45 threshold pair (cash 7,750) sits there, beside the 9-day average at 7,792.11, Tuesday’s 7,791.50 high (cash 7,748.42) and the 18-day crossing price for Thursday at 7,791.00. The 20-day average at 7,788.23, the Pivot Point at 7,787.83 (cash 7,744.75), the 50 percent retracement of the four-week range at 7,785.13 and Wednesday’s 7,785.00 open (cash 7,741.92) follow. That group spans 7.45 points. The 9-day crossing price at 7,783.66 and the 50-day average at 7,772.35 sit beneath it.

The band group comes next. The 40-day crossing price at 7,765.97, Pivot S1 at 7,763.42 (cash 7,720.34) and one standard deviation support at 7,760.51 (cash 7,717.43) all sit inside the 7,760 to 7,768 band. Then the lows. The 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low at 7,758.60 sits 1.40 points beneath it, then the 5-day average at 7,757.05, Tuesday’s 7,755.25 settle (cash 7,712.17) and Wednesday’s 7,751.00 low (cash 7,707.92). Two standard deviations support at 7,744.04 (cash 7,700.96) and the 7,743.08 conversion of the desk note’s 7,700 support sit just above the 7,740 stop.

The deeper band sits beneath the stop. Three standard deviations support at 7,731.41 (cash 7,688.33) and Pivot S2 at 7,726.58 (cash 7,683.50) lead it. The 7,720.45 bottom of the one-range frame and the 7,709.45 flip pair (cash 7,667) follow, then the 38.2 percent retracement from the 13-week high at 7,706.74, Tuesday’s 7,704.50 low (cash 7,661.42) and Pivot S3 at 7,702.17 (cash 7,659.09). The 100-day average at 7,695.56 and the 7,692.45 put-side pair (cash 7,650) sit beneath them. The one-month low at 7,672.75 (cash 7,629.67) sits 127.50 points beneath the settle. The 200-day average sits 392.59 points down at 7,407.66.

Every average sits beneath the settle. The 5-day stands 43.20 points under it, the 9-day 8.14, the 20-day 12.02 and the 50-day 27.90. The 100-day sits 104.69 beneath and the 200-day 392.59. The 5-day rose 6.00 points from Tuesday’s 7,751.05 as the 10/14 settle of 7,770.25 left the window and 7,800.25 replaced it. The 20-day rose 1.39 from 7,786.84 when the 09/23 settle of 7,772.50 dropped out. The 50-day was little changed. The longer stack rises. The 30 older settlements in the 50-day window averaged 7,761.77, beneath the latest 20, which keeps the 20-day above the 50-day. The 50 older settlements in the 100-day window averaged 7,618.76, and the 100 older settlements in the 200-day window 7,119.76. The 9-day sits 3.88 points above the 20-day. For Thursday the averages would be crossed at 7,783.66 for the 9-day, 7,791.00 for the 18-day and 7,765.97 for the 40-day.

Momentum sits just over the midline. On the provider’s published readings, relative strength reads 52.92 on the 9-day, 52.34 on the 14-day and 52.33 on the 20-day. The raw stochastic reads 58.89 percent on the 9-day and 56.09 percent on the 14-day, and the smoothed 14-day %K at 40.09 percent sits above %D at 32.51 percent. Negative direction still leads on both windows. On the 9-day it reads 20.41 against 13.82 with the ADX at 22.18; on the 14-day, 21.24 against 15.32 with the ADX at a low 14.46. Historic volatility reads 9.74 percent on the 9-day and 9.33 percent on the 14-day. Those readings were taken at 6:24 PM ET after the 6:00 PM ET reopen. They may include the first minutes of the Thursday session.

The composite multi-indicator read published for Thursday is 40 percent buy, against 8 percent buy in the prior session’s snapshot, with signal strength described as weak and direction as strengthening. It read 16 percent buy a week ago and 72 percent buy a month ago. The short-horizon group averages 20 percent buy and the medium-horizon group 25 percent buy. The long-horizon group reads 67 percent buy. The trend indicator reads buy.

Ranges ran under average. The 14-day average true range stands at 79.80 points and the 14-day average daily range at 79.41. The 9-day figures are 81.41 and 80.56 and the 20-day figures 79.13 and 78.06. Wednesday’s 61.25 point range was 0.77 times the 14-day average daily range. One average true range either side of the settle frames Thursday between 7,720.45 and 7,880.05. The deviation bands are tighter. They run 7,760.51 to 7,839.99 at one deviation, 7,744.04 to 7,856.46 at two and 7,731.41 to 7,869.09 at three. Built from five settlements, they describe settlement dispersion only. A headline gap can open outside any of them. The desk note’s implied one-day move of 0.63 percent equals about 48.87 points on the 7,757.17 cash close.

Zoom out. Daily ranges over the last nine sessions ran 53.50, 40.75, 29.50, 138.75, 84.50, 133.50, 96.25, 87.00 and 61.25 points. Wednesday’s was the narrowest since the 29.50 of 10/13. Settlement changes over the same stretch read plus 43.50, minus 1.75, minus 2.25, minus 85.50, plus 20.75, minus 86.75, plus 30.25, plus 20.75 and plus 45.00. The bar left a 15.25 point body, a 12.00 point upper shadow above the settle and a 34.00 point lower shadow beneath the open. Settlements over those nine sessions ran 7,859.75, 7,858.00, 7,855.75, 7,770.25, 7,791.00, 7,704.25, 7,734.50, 7,755.25 and 7,800.25. The high was the highest since 10/14. Session highs over six sessions read 7,879.75, 7,801.75, 7,809.50, 7,773.25, 7,791.50 and 7,812.25, and session lows 7,741.00, 7,717.25, 7,676.00, 7,677.00, 7,704.50 and 7,751.00. No four-hour series and no prior-quarter extremes were captured. Swing structure rests on daily bars, with the 13-week high of 7,905.00 and the one-month low of 7,672.75 as the outer references.

Technology led as the volatility index fell to 16.68

Wednesday’s bar carries no clock. It opened at 7,785.00 at the Tuesday 6:00 PM ET reopen, 29.75 points above Tuesday’s settle, and settled 15.25 points above that open. No intraday series exists for the session. The news items below keep their own times, and none is tied to a price move.

Leadership narrowed toward technology. The Nasdaq-100 rose 1.13 percent and the semiconductor index 1.97 percent against 0.58 percent for the S&P 500 cash index, while the NYSE composite rose 0.26 percent and the Dow 0.69 percent. That reverses Tuesday’s pattern, when the broader measures outpaced the capitalisation-weighted index. The desk note described a rally led by technology and earnings. Per the same note, the semiconductor and software funds each rose about 2 percent and the largest technology names about 1 percent. The note also said a space-launch company’s shares rose 7.8 percent after its results, against a 6.6 percent options-implied move.

The releases came after the close. The news feed carried the social-media company’s results: earnings of 3.83 dollars a share against 3.57 expected and revenue of 64.60 billion against 63.33 billion. The same news-feed item listed operating income of 12.99 billion against a 20.85 billion estimate and no revenue outlook for 2027. Then the carmaker. The feed carried the electric-vehicle maker’s adjusted earnings of 0.48 dollars a share against 0.44 expected, on revenue of 28.05 billion against 28.13 billion. The computing-services company and the chipmaker also reported earnings above estimates on the feed. The desk note said the social-media company traded about 4 percent higher after hours and the electric-vehicle maker roughly flat.

Gulf headlines ran into the close. At 2:47 PM ET the news feed carried a report that the State Department was preparing ordered departures from US embassies across the Gulf. More followed. From 3:00 PM ET to 3:03 PM ET it carried a Saudi statement that air defences intercepted a drone aimed at the Shaybah oilfield with no impact on operations. From 4:52 PM ET to 4:58 PM ET it carried press reports, citing two US officials, that US troops and diplomats were moving out of posts in the region. These are statements carried by the news feed rather than events confirmed for this review. No causal link to the index is drawn.

The reopened Globex session quoted the December contract at 7,782.75 at 6:24 PM ET, after those releases and headlines, and the chart showed 7,776.00 at 6:26 PM ET. Those are reopened-session quotes; the settlement stays at 7,800.25. Coinciding is all the record shows.

Yields edged up. The ten-year yield index closed at 5.15 percent against 5.11 percent, and the thirty-year at 5.44 percent against 5.42 percent. The dollar index closed at 101.78, up 0.08. Per the data provider’s commentary, its firmness was tied to the small rise in the ten-year yield and to safe-haven demand after the report on embassy departures. The 20-year Treasury auction drew a high yield of 5.469 percent against 5.420 percent previously, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The next policy statement is scheduled for 2:00 PM ET on October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it. Per the data provider’s commentary, markets price a 15 percent chance of a quarter-point increase at that meeting.

Implied volatility eased. The volatility index closed at 16.68 against 17.31 on Tuesday, a decline of 0.63 point or 3.64 percent, and the volatility-of-volatility index at 94.55 against 97.15. The desk note said the volatility index fell about 4 percent after Wednesday’s volatility-index options expiration. It also said fixed-strike implied volatility declined during the session before partly reversing after the close. December gold settled 0.18 percent higher at 4,150.0 and December WTI 0.68 percent lower at 97.15.

Activity eased. Wednesday’s December volume was 1,618,838 contracts on the 2026-10-21 row, against 1,718,580 on the revised 2026-10-20 row, a drop of 99,742 or 5.8 percent. Our Wednesday outlook carried the preliminary 1,669,507 for Tuesday. Tuesday’s open interest now reads 1,918,320 on the revised 2026-10-20 row; that outlook said it was not yet reported. Wednesday’s open interest was not yet reported. No weekly positioning report was captured for this session.

The cash close sits above both model lines. The desk note used is the 5:42 PM ET edition for Wednesday, read at 6:19 PM ET, and its reference prices are Tuesday’s closes: its 7,712 index reference equals Tuesday’s 7,712.57 cash close. Its narrative states a close of 7,757, up 0.6 percent. The 7,712.57 close increased by the provider’s 0.58 percent gain computes to 7,757.3, beside the provider’s 7,757.17 close, which this article uses.

Now the distances, in cash. The close sits 7.17 points above the 7,750 modeled volatility threshold (ES pair 7,792.45) and 90.17 above the 7,667 modeled gamma-flip level (ES pair 7,709.45). It sits 107.17 above the 7,650 put-side support base (ES pair 7,692.45) and 342.83 beneath the 8,100 call-side ceiling (ES pair 8,142.45). The largest gamma concentration sits at 8,000 (ES pair 8,042.45). In the desk note’s model, the gamma index reads minus 0.523, gamma tilt 0.963 and gamma notional minus 61.96 million dollars. The modeled threshold and flip level are model outputs; neither is an option strike.

The note draws its own map. Its summary lists resistance at 7,760 and 7,800, support at 7,700, 7,600 and 7,450 and a desk pivot at 7,690, above which it holds a bullish stance, with key strikes at 8,000, 7,000, 7,700 and 7,750, all in cash. The close sits 67.17 points above that desk pivot. Then the narrative. The note’s narrative said dealers were long roughly 19,000 call contracts at the 7,700 strike, which it said held as support during the session. Then the flow. Per the narrative, its real-time hedging-flow measure registered roughly minus 4 billion dollars of cumulative delta driven by same-day call selling. The narrative added that longer-dated call buying of roughly 1.5 billion dollars in S&P equities, about 1 billion of it in the largest technology names, pointed to positioning for upside into the earnings releases. Those characterisations are the note’s. The console data carry no trade side, and no directional read is drawn from them here.

The note’s implied one-day move is 0.63 percent, about 48.87 points on the 7,757.17 close. Its published implied one-day high and low of 7,786.7 and 7,689.2 are centred on a price near 7,738, away from both its reference and the close, so that pair is excluded. The consoles add detail. The S&P 500 positioning console, read at 6:19 PM ET with a page date of 2026-10-21, shows model call gamma of minus 3.58 billion against put gamma of minus 3.72 billion. It puts one-month implied volatility at 13.20 percent against realised volatility of 8.87 percent, the implied-volatility rank at 18.22 percent and the put-to-call open-interest ratio at 1.47. A second console follows. The console for the S&P 500 exchange-traded fund shows call gamma of minus 2.57 billion against put gamma of minus 3.99 billion and a put-to-call open-interest ratio of 2.11.

Two gamma measures appear here. The desk note’s gamma notional and the consoles’ gamma fields come from different models and timestamps. They are not reconciled here, and neither is summed with the other. The consoles’ current-price fields and high and low volatility point fields were not used.

Damping is the question for Thursday. In this review’s interpretation a cash close just above the modeled volatility threshold, with a negative gamma index, leaves the contract near the boundary of an environment where moves are less likely to be dampened. That reading carries no direction of its own.

The trade map for Thursday

The primary setup is a long from 7,760 to 7,768. The settle sits above every settlement average from the 5-day to the 200-day after three consecutive higher settles. The composite improved to 40 percent buy, with direction described as strengthening. Per the desk note’s model, the cash close sits above the modeled volatility threshold at 7,750 and above the desk pivot at 7,690. Now the band. It holds Pivot S1 at 7,763.42, 3.42 points above its bottom and 4.58 beneath its top. One standard deviation support at 7,760.51 and the 40-day crossing price at 7,765.97 sit inside it too. The whole band sits beneath the settle. Then the stop. It sits at 7,740, 4.04 beneath two standard deviations support at 7,744.04 and 3.08 beneath the 7,743.08 conversion of the desk note’s 7,700 support. Targets step up. The first, 7,788, sits 0.17 above the Pivot Point at 7,787.83 and still 12.25 beneath the settle. The second, 7,812, sits 0.35 above the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week high at 7,811.65 and 0.25 beneath Wednesday’s 7,812.25 high. The extended 7,836 sits 3.99 beneath one standard deviation resistance at 7,839.99. The evidence against is plain. Negative direction still leads on both directional systems and the gamma index is negative. The review calls the setup an analyst judgment that dips are bought after the earnings releases. No measured edge stands behind it.

Primary setup for Thursday
Direction
Long
Entry Zone
7,760 to 7,768 (cash 7,716.92 to 7,724.92), around Pivot S1 at 7,763.42 and one standard deviation support at 7,760.51
Stop Loss
7,740 (cash 7,696.92), beneath two standard deviations support at 7,744.04 and the 7,743.08 conversion of the desk note’s 7,700 support
Target 1
7,788 (cash 7,744.92), just above the Pivot Point at 7,787.83
Target 2
7,812 (cash 7,768.92), at the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week high at 7,811.65, just beneath Wednesday’s 7,812.25 high
Target 3 (extended)
7,836 (cash 7,792.92), beneath one standard deviation resistance at 7,839.99
Risk-to-Reward
Approximately 1:1 to T1, 1:2 to T2 and 1:3 to T3, measured from the 7,764 midpoint of the entry zone against the 7,740 stop, a risk of 24 points
Invalidation
A settle beneath two standard deviations support at 7,744.04 negates the thesis. Short of that, the edge is removed by acceptance beneath the entry band, defined as two consecutive 30-minute closes beneath 7,760; a touch alone does not remove it
Macro override
A risk-off move on a confirmed Gulf escalation, or a reversal of the after-hours earnings reaction in the largest technology names, would pressure the contract. In that scenario a move through the 7,740 stop invalidates the long, and Pivot S2 at 7,726.58 and Pivot S3 at 7,702.17 become the references within one 14-day average true range of 79.80 points of the 7,740 stop (13.42 and 37.83 points beyond it)
Status at Wednesday’s settle
7,800.25, 32.25 points above the band top; the reopened session quoted 7,782.75 at 6:24 PM ET, 14.75 above it

Now the arithmetic. From the 7,764 midpoint the risk to the stop is 24 points, 30.1 percent of the 14-day average true range of 79.80. The targets sit 24, 48 and 72 points above the midpoint. Exact multiples. The settle sat 40.25 points above the band bottom and 32.25 above its top. So the first target, 7,788, sits beneath the settle, 0.23 under the 20-day average at 7,788.23. A one-range frame from the settle, 7,720.45 to 7,880.05, reaches 19.55 points beneath the stop and ends 44.05 above the extended target. Two details stand out. Wednesday’s 7,751.00 low sat 9.00 points beneath the band and 11.00 above the stop. The extended target sits 11.33 above Pivot R1 at 7,824.67.

The session bands are the review’s analyst judgment. Through the Wednesday night session, from 6:00 PM ET to 3:00 AM ET, the review expects roughly 7,750 to 7,815, with a neutral bias above Pivot S1 at 7,763.42. London, from 3:00 AM to 8:00 AM ET, runs roughly 7,745 to 7,825 with a neutral bias. There the review names Pivot R1 at 7,824.67 the first meaningful resistance above the Pivot Point at 7,787.83. The cash-session bands are wider. The morning band, 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM ET, runs roughly 7,730 to 7,850. The afternoon band, 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM ET, runs 7,720 to 7,860, with Gulf headlines the main afternoon influence in the review’s judgment. The review’s scenario ranges, also analyst judgment, run 7,760 to 7,840 for the low-range case, 7,730 to 7,850 for the most likely and 7,720 to 7,880 for the high-range case.

Thursday’s calendar starts Wednesday night. Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Wednesday. The Thursday session’s first prints on the provider’s overview were an open of 7,797.00, a high of 7,798.75 and a low of 7,781.75; those belong to Thursday and are no part of Wednesday’s range. Overnight items come next. The President is listed to speak at 7:00 PM ET and the Bank of Korea rate decision at 9:00 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. In the review’s reading Gulf headlines are the main overnight risk. The Swiss central bank’s meeting minutes are listed at 3:30 AM ET and the UK industrial orders survey at 6:00 AM ET on Thursday, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Then the morning. Weekly jobless claims are listed at 8:30 AM ET with a forecast of 200,000, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The cash open at 9:30 AM ET sets the session’s first directional test after the overnight earnings reaction.

The rest of the day is light. Euro-area consumer confidence is listed at 10:00 AM ET and a 5-year inflation-protected Treasury auction at 1:00 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Globex reopens at 6:00 PM ET on Thursday. Australian flash purchasing managers’ surveys are listed at 6:00 PM ET and Japan’s consumer prices at 7:30 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, ahead of Friday’s flash surveys in Europe and the US. The calendar lists no Thursday, October 22, 2026 entry of its own. The FOMC statement is scheduled for 2:00 PM ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it. An internet search company and a software maker report that day without a confirmed time, also as the calendar lists it. In this review’s judgment the first-order influence for ES on Thursday is the cash-session reaction to the after-close earnings releases, with the 8:30 AM ET jobless claims, listed by the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, the scheduled macro release.

One path is weighted. In this review’s analyst judgment the most probable path holds the contract between Pivot S2 at 7,726.58 and Pivot R2 at 7,849.08. In the same judgment, a dip toward the 7,760 to 7,768 band that holds above two standard deviations support at 7,744.04 is weighted slightly above a break lower. It rests on judgment. The review weighs it that way because the settle sits above every settlement average after three higher settles, the composite improved to 40 percent buy with direction strengthening, and the cash close sits above the modeled volatility threshold and the desk pivot. One alternative is named. A risk-off move on Gulf headlines that carries the contract beneath Pivot S2 at 7,726.58 toward the 7,709.45 source pair of the modeled gamma-flip level would invalidate the reading. The review names the counterweights. Negative direction still leads on both directional systems, the gamma index is negative and the reopened session quoted the contract beneath the settle, so a break lower is a live alternative.

Wednesday’s high stopped 17.75 points short of the old band; Thursday’s band sits 9.00 points above Wednesday’s low, at Pivot S1.

1. Executive Summary

The December S&P 500 contract settled at 7,800.25 on Wednesday, up 45.00 or 0.58 percent from Tuesday's settle of 7,755.25, after trading between 7,812.25 and 7,751.00, a 61.25 point daily range. The settle finished at 80.4 percent of the range, and the 61.25 point range was 0.77 times the published 14-day average daily range of 79.41 points. Wednesday printed a higher high and a higher low against Tuesday, the higher settle was the third consecutive higher settle, and the settle was the highest since the 7,855.75 settle of 10/13.

The cash index closed at 7,757.17, up 44.60 or 0.58 percent, while the Nasdaq-100 rose 1.13 percent and the semiconductor index 1.97 percent, and the NYSE composite gained 0.26 percent and the Dow 0.69 percent, so leadership came from technology rather than from broad participation. The desk note described a rally led by technology and earnings, with a space-launch company's shares up 7.8 percent after its results. The volatility index closed at 16.68 against 17.31 on Tuesday, the ten-year yield index at 5.15 percent against 5.11 percent and the dollar index at 101.78 against 101.70.

After the close the news feed carried results from a social-media company, an electric-vehicle maker, a computing-services company and a chipmaker, each above estimates on earnings per share, and the desk note said the social-media company traded about 4 percent higher after hours while the electric-vehicle maker was roughly flat. The reopened session quoted the contract at 7,782.75 at 6:24 PM ET, beneath the settle, as the news feed carried press reports of US troop and diplomatic moves out of Middle East posts. The cash close sits 7.17 points above the modeled volatility threshold at SPX 7,750 and 90.17 points above the modeled gamma-flip level at SPX 7,667, with a gamma index of minus 0.523.

The settle sits above every settlement average from the 5-day to the 200-day, the composite multi-indicator read improved to 40 percent buy from 8 percent buy, and negative direction still leads on both directional systems. The published 14-day average true range is 79.80 points. The primary setup is a long from the 7,760 to 7,768 band around Pivot S1 at 7,763.42, stopped at 7,740 beneath two standard deviations support at 7,744.04, with objectives at 7,788, 7,812 and an extended 7,836.

2. Price Action & Technical Structure

2.1 Intraday and Session Review

The Wednesday session opened at 7,785.00 at the Tuesday 6:00 PM ET reopen, 29.75 points above Tuesday's settle, marked a daily high of 7,812.25 and a daily low of 7,751.00, and settled at 7,800.25. No intraday series is available for this session, so this review does not describe the order in which the high and the low printed, and no timed price path is asserted; the daily bar alone fixes the open, the extremes and the settle.

This review records only that the 7,812.25 high and the 7,751.00 low both belong to Wednesday's completed session and that the settle sits 49.25 points above the low and 12.00 points beneath the high.

Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Wednesday for the Thursday session, so the open, high and low shown on the provider's overview, 7,797.00, 7,798.75 and 7,781.75, belong to the new Thursday session and are not Wednesday's range. The provider's last quote at 6:24 PM ET was 7,782.75 and the chart showed 7,776.00 at 6:26 PM ET; these are reopened-session quotes, not settlements.

Wednesday's completed-session extremes are taken from the settlement row, and they are also the completed-session inputs behind the published pivot ladder rather than an independently read bar. Pivot R3 at 7,885.92 minus Pivot S3 at 7,702.17, divided by three, returns 61.25, and Pivot R2 at 7,849.08 minus Pivot S2 at 7,726.58, divided by two, returns the same 61.25. Three times the Pivot Point of 7,787.83 less the 7,800.25 settle gives a high plus low sum of 15,563.24, which the pair of 7,812.25 and 7,751.00 reproduces to the published rounding at 15,563.25, and that pair reproduces all seven published rungs.

The provider's settlement row and the chart's completed daily bar carry the same 7,785.00 open, 7,812.25 high, 7,751.00 low and 7,800.25 settle.

2.2 Daily Structure

Wednesday printed a higher high and a higher low: the 7,812.25 high sits 20.75 points above Tuesday's 7,791.50, and the 7,751.00 low sits 46.50 points above Tuesday's 7,704.50. The settle above the 7,785.00 open leaves a body of 15.25 points, an upper shadow of 12.00 points above the settle and a lower shadow of 34.00 points beneath the open.

Settlements over the last nine sessions ran 7,859.75, 7,858.00, 7,855.75, 7,770.25, 7,791.00, 7,704.25, 7,734.50 and 7,755.25 before Wednesday's 7,800.25, so Wednesday's settle was the third consecutive higher settle and the highest since the 7,855.75 settle of 10/13. The 7,812.25 high was the highest session high since the 7,879.75 high of 10/14. The sequence of session highs over the last six sessions reads 7,879.75, 7,801.75, 7,809.50, 7,773.25, 7,791.50 and 7,812.25, and the sequence of session lows reads 7,741.00, 7,717.25, 7,676.00, 7,677.00, 7,704.50 and 7,751.00.

The 52-week and 13-week high both sit at 7,905.00, 104.75 points above the settle, with the one-month high at 7,897.50 and the one-month low at 7,672.75. No prior-quarter high or low was captured for this session, so the 13-week extremes serve as the available quarterly reference.

2.3 4-Hour and Swing Structure

Daily ranges for the last nine sessions ran 53.50, 40.75, 29.50, 138.75, 84.50, 133.50, 96.25, 87.00 and 61.25, so Wednesday's range was the narrowest since the 29.50 point range of 10/13. The settlement changes over the same nine sessions read plus 43.50, minus 1.75, minus 2.25, minus 85.50, plus 20.75, minus 86.75, plus 30.25, plus 20.75 and plus 45.00.

The retracement grid published for Thursday places the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week high at 7,811.65, 11.40 points above the settle, the 50 percent retracement of the four-week range at 7,785.13 and the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low at 7,758.60. Further beneath, the 38.2 percent retracement from the 13-week high sits at 7,706.74. No four-hour series was captured for this session, so swing structure here rests on daily bars only.

2.4 Moving Averages

The averages cited in this subsection were computed from the provider's daily settlement series for the December contract, which holds 259 completed sessions through Wednesday; the partial Thursday row that appeared after the 6:00 PM ET reopen is excluded. The 5-day average stands at 7,757.05, the 9-day at 7,792.11, the 20-day at 7,788.23, the 50-day at 7,772.35, the 100-day at 7,695.56 and the 200-day at 7,407.66.

The 7,800.25 settle sits 43.20 points above the 5-day average, 8.14 points above the 9-day, about 12 points above the 20-day, 27.90 points above the 50-day, about 105 points above the 100-day and 392.59 points above the 200-day. The 5-day average rose 6.00 points from Tuesday's 7,751.05, because the 10/14 settle of 7,770.25 left the window and was replaced by 7,800.25. The 20-day rose 1.39 points from 7,786.84, because the 09/23 settle of 7,772.50 left that window, and the 50-day was little changed.

The 20-day average sits above the 50-day because the last 20 settlements averaged 7,788.23 against 7,772.35 for the full 50, which means the 30 older settlements in the 50-day window averaged lower, at 7,761.77. The 50-day sits above the 100-day because the 50 older settlements in the 100-day window averaged lower, at 7,618.76, and the 100-day sits above the 200-day because the 100 older settlements in the 200-day window averaged lower, at 7,119.76. The 9-day average sits above the 20-day by about four points. The projection grid gives the prices at which each average would be crossed on Thursday: 7,783.66 for the 9-day, 7,791.00 for the 18-day and 7,765.97 for the 40-day.

2.5 Oscillator and Trend Readings

The oscillator figures below are as published on the provider's technical page, read at 6:24 PM ET after the 6:00 PM ET reopen, so they may include the first minutes of the Thursday session rather than the settle alone; they are the provider's published readings, and none was computed for this review. The 9-day relative strength reads 52.92, the 14-day relative strength 52.34 and the 20-day relative strength 52.33.

The 9-day raw stochastic reads 58.89 percent and the 14-day raw stochastic 56.09 percent, while the 14-day stochastic %K reads 40.09 percent and the 14-day stochastic %D 32.51 percent, so %K sits above %D in the middle of the range.

The 9-day directional index ADX reads 22.18 with the 9-day +DI at 13.82 and the 9-day -DI at 20.41; the 14-day directional index ADX reads 14.46 with the 14-day +DI at 15.32 and the 14-day -DI at 21.24, so negative direction still leads on both, with a low 14-day ADX. The 9-day historic volatility reads 9.74 percent and the 14-day historic volatility 9.33 percent.

The composite multi-indicator read published for the Thursday session is 40 percent buy, against the prior session's snapshot of 8 percent buy, with signal strength described as weak and direction as strengthening. The snapshot history reads 16 percent buy a week ago and 72 percent buy a month ago. The short-horizon group averages 20 percent buy, the medium-horizon group 25 percent buy and the long-horizon group 67 percent buy, and the composite trend indicator reads buy.

2.6 Volatility and Expected Range

The published 14-day average true range stands at 79.80 points and the 14-day average daily range at 79.41 points; the 9-day average true range is 81.41 with a 9-day average daily range of 80.56, and the 20-day average true range is 79.13 with a 20-day average daily range of 78.06. Wednesday's 61.25 point range was 0.77 times the 14-day average daily range.

Adding and subtracting the 14-day average true range of 79.80 points from the 7,800.25 settle frames Thursday between 7,720.45 and 7,880.05. The published standard-deviation bands are built from five settlements: one deviation spans 7,760.51 to 7,839.99, two spans 7,744.04 to 7,856.46 and three spans 7,731.41 to 7,869.09. The desk note's implied one-day move is 0.63 percent for the index. These bands describe settlement dispersion, not intraday reach, and a headline gap can open outside any of them.

3. Key Levels

3.1 Resistance

Above the 7,800.25 settle, the first overhead reference is the 7,803.08 conversion of the desk note's SPX 7,760 resistance, followed by the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week high at 7,811.65, Wednesday's 7,812.25 high and the published target price at 7,819.56. Pivot R1 at 7,824.67 and one standard deviation resistance at 7,839.99 come next, then the 7,843.08 conversion of the desk note's SPX 7,800 resistance, Pivot R2 at 7,849.08 and two standard deviations resistance at 7,856.46. Three standard deviations resistance at 7,869.09, Pivot R3 at 7,885.92, the one-month high at 7,897.50 and the 52-week high at 7,905.00 form the extended band.

3.2 Support

Beneath the settle sits the 7,792.45 source pair of the modeled volatility threshold, then the 18-day average crossing price at 7,791.00, the Pivot Point at 7,787.83 and the 50 percent retracement of the four-week range at 7,785.13. Pivot S1 at 7,763.42, one standard deviation support at 7,760.51 and the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low at 7,758.60 follow, then Tuesday's 7,755.25 settle and Wednesday's 7,751.00 low. Two standard deviations support at 7,744.04, the 7,743.08 conversion of the desk note's SPX 7,700 support, three standard deviations support at 7,731.41 and Pivot S2 at 7,726.58 form the deeper band, with the 7,709.45 source pair of the modeled gamma-flip level and Pivot S3 at 7,702.17 the extended references.

4. Macro Drivers

4.1 Dollar, Rates, and Fed Policy

The dollar index closed at 101.78, up 0.08, and the data provider's commentary tied its firmness to a small rise in the ten-year yield and to safe-haven demand after the report on embassy departures. The ten-year yield index closed at 5.15 percent against 5.11 percent and the thirty-year at 5.44 percent against 5.42 percent. The 20-year Treasury auction drew a high yield of 5.469 percent against 5.420 percent previously, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed against the calendar. The next policy statement is scheduled for 2:00 PM ET on October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it, and the data provider's commentary said markets price a 15 percent chance of a quarter-point increase at that meeting.

4.2 Large-Cap Leadership and Earnings

After the close the news feed carried the social-media company's results, with earnings of 3.83 dollars a share against 3.57 expected and revenue of 64.60 billion against 63.33 billion, operating income of 12.99 billion against a 20.85 billion estimate and no revenue outlook for 2027, and the electric-vehicle maker's adjusted earnings of 0.48 dollars a share against 0.44 expected on revenue of 28.05 billion against 28.13 billion. A computing-services company and a chipmaker also reported earnings above estimates on the feed. The desk note said the social-media company traded about 4 percent higher after hours and the electric-vehicle maker roughly flat, and that a space-launch company rose 7.8 percent on Wednesday against a 6.6 percent options-implied move. An internet search company and a software maker report on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it, without a confirmed time.

4.3 Geopolitical Backdrop

The news feed carried at 2:47 PM ET a report that the State Department was preparing ordered departures from US embassies across the Gulf, and the news feed carried at 3:00 PM ET to 3:03 PM ET a Saudi statement that air defences intercepted a drone aimed at the Shaybah oilfield with no impact on operations and at 4:52 PM ET to 4:58 PM ET press reports, citing two US officials, that US troops and diplomats were moving out of posts in the region. December WTI settled 0.68 percent lower at 97.15. These are statements carried by the news feed rather than events confirmed for this review.

4.4 Sector Breadth and Rotation

Leadership narrowed toward technology: the Nasdaq-100 rose 1.13 percent and the semiconductor index 1.97 percent against 0.58 percent for the S&P 500 cash index, while the NYSE composite rose 0.26 percent and the Dow 0.69 percent. The desk note put the semiconductor and software funds each up about 2 percent and the largest technology names up about 1 percent. This reverses Tuesday's pattern, when the broader measures outpaced the capitalisation-weighted index.

4.5 Cross-Asset and Volatility

The volatility index closed at 16.68 against 17.31 on Tuesday and the volatility-of-volatility index at 94.55 against 97.15. The desk note said the volatility index fell about 4 percent after Wednesday's volatility-index options expiration and that fixed-strike implied volatility declined during the session before partly reversing after the close. December gold settled 0.18 percent higher at 4,150.0 and December WTI 0.68 percent lower at 97.15.

4.6 Institutional Positioning

No weekly positioning report was captured for this session. Open interest on the December contract stood at 1,918,320 for Tuesday in the provider's settlement record, and Wednesday's volume was 1,618,838 contracts against 1,718,580 on Tuesday. The measured closing basis was 43.08 points, the December settlement of 7,800.25 less the 7,757.17 cash close from the same provider's daily record, against 42.68 on Tuesday.

5. SPX Options Flow Context

The desk note read for this section is the 5:42 PM ET edition for Wednesday, read at 6:19 PM ET. Its reference prices are the prior session's closes, not Wednesday's: SPX 7,712 equals Tuesday's 7,712.57 cash close. The note's narrative states a close of 7,757, up 0.6 percent, and 7,712.57 increased by the provider's 0.58 percent gain computes to 7,757.3, beside the provider's 7,757.17 close, which this review uses. Every level below is read against Wednesday's 7,757.17 cash close.

On the index the primary call side ceiling sits at SPX 8,100, the largest gamma concentration at SPX 8,000, the modeled volatility threshold at SPX 7,750, the modeled gamma-flip level at SPX 7,667 and the primary put side support base at SPX 7,650. The close sits 342.83 points beneath the ceiling, 7.17 points above the threshold, 90.17 points above the flip level and 107.17 points above the put side base. In the desk note's model, the gamma index reads minus 0.523, gamma tilt 0.963 and gamma notional minus 61.96 million dollars. The note's summary lists resistance at 7,760 and 7,800, support at 7,700, 7,600 and 7,450 and its desk pivot at 7,690, above which it holds a bullish stance, and its key strikes are SPX 8,000, 7,000, 7,700 and 7,750.

The note publishes its own December futures pair for each level, carrying the source's 42.45 point offset rather than the measured 43.08 point basis: the ceiling at 8,142.45, the largest concentration at 8,042.45, the modeled volatility threshold at 7,792.45, the modeled gamma-flip level at 7,709.45 and the put side support base at 7,692.45. These are quoted as the source's pairs. The modeled threshold and flip level are model outputs, not option strikes.

The narrative said dealers were long roughly 19,000 call contracts at the 7,700 strike, which it said held as support during the session, that its real-time hedging-flow measure registered roughly minus 4 billion dollars of cumulative delta driven by same-day call selling, and that longer-dated call buying of roughly 1.5 billion dollars in S&P equities, about 1 billion of it in the largest technology names, pointed to positioning for upside into the earnings releases. Those characterisations are the note's, and the console data carry no trade side, so no directional read is drawn from them here. The note's published implied one-day high and low of 7,786.7 and 7,689.2 are centred on a price near 7,738 rather than on its reference or on the close, so that pair is excluded.

The S&P 500 positioning console, read at 6:19 PM ET with a page date of 2026-10-21, shows call gamma of minus 3.58 billion against put gamma of minus 3.72 billion, one-month implied volatility of 13.20 percent against realised volatility of 8.87 percent, an implied-volatility rank of 18.22 percent and a put-to-call open-interest ratio of 1.47. The console for the S&P 500 exchange-traded fund shows call gamma of minus 2.57 billion against put gamma of minus 3.99 billion and a put-to-call open-interest ratio of 2.11. The note's gamma notional and the consoles' gamma fields come from different models and timestamps and are not reconciled or summed here, and the consoles' current-price fields and high and low volatility point fields were not used.

In this review's interpretation a cash close just above the modeled volatility threshold, with a negative gamma index, leaves the contract near the boundary of an environment where moves are less likely to be dampened; the primary setup buys the 7,760 to 7,768 band, above the 7,743.08 conversion of the desk note's SPX 7,700 support, with the stop at 7,740.

6. Forecast

6.1 Night Session (6:00 PM ET Wednesday to 3:00 AM ET Thursday, Globex/Asia)

Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Wednesday after the after-close earnings releases and quoted the December contract at 7,782.75 at 6:24 PM ET. The President is listed to speak at 7:00 PM ET and the Bank of Korea rate decision at 9:00 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, and in this review's reading Gulf headlines are the main overnight risk. Bias neutral above Pivot S1 at 7,763.42, expected Globex band roughly 7,750 to 7,815.

6.2 London Session (3:00 AM to 8:00 AM ET Thursday)

The Swiss central bank's meeting minutes are listed at 3:30 AM ET and the UK industrial orders survey at 6:00 AM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Bias neutral, expected band roughly 7,745 to 7,825, with Pivot R1 at 7,824.67 the first meaningful resistance above the Pivot Point at 7,787.83.

6.3 Morning Session (9:30 AM to 12:00 PM ET Thursday, RTH Open)

Weekly jobless claims are listed at 8:30 AM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, and the cash open at 9:30 AM ET sets the session's first directional test after the overnight earnings reaction. Euro-area consumer confidence is listed at 10:00 AM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Expected band roughly 7,730 to 7,850.

6.4 Afternoon Session (12:00 PM to 4:00 PM ET Thursday)

A 5-year inflation-protected Treasury auction is listed at 1:00 PM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Expected band roughly 7,720 to 7,860, with Gulf headlines the main afternoon influence in this review's judgment.

6.5 Night Session Forward (6:00 PM ET Thursday)

Globex reopens at 6:00 PM ET on Thursday. Australian flash purchasing managers' surveys are listed at 6:00 PM ET and Japan's consumer prices at 7:30 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, ahead of Friday's flash surveys in Europe and the US.

6.6 Expected Range (Thursday Full Session)

Low-range scenario: 7,760 to 7,840

Mid-range scenario (most likely): 7,730 to 7,850

High-range scenario: 7,720 to 7,880

6.7 Most Likely Path

In this review's analyst judgment the most probable path holds the contract between Pivot S2 at 7,726.58 and Pivot R2 at 7,849.08, with a dip toward the 7,760 to 7,768 band that holds above two standard deviations support at 7,744.04 weighted slightly above a break lower. The settle sits above every settlement average from the 5-day to the 200-day after three higher settles, the composite improved to 40 percent buy with direction strengthening, and the cash close sits above the modeled volatility threshold and the desk pivot.

The alternative that would invalidate this reading is a risk-off move on Gulf headlines that carries the contract beneath Pivot S2 at 7,726.58 toward the 7,709.45 source pair of the modeled gamma-flip level. Negative direction still leads on both directional systems, the gamma index is negative and the reopened session quoted the contract beneath the settle, so a break lower is a live alternative.

7. Thursday Economic Calendar

Wednesday's releases are complete. UK consumer prices printed at 2:00 AM ET at 3.5 percent, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed against the calendar. Usual weekly earnings for the third quarter were scheduled for 10:00 AM ET and the official weekly petroleum status report for 10:30 AM ET on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, both as the calendar lists them. The 20-year Treasury auction drew a high yield of 5.469 percent at 1:00 PM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed against the calendar. A social-media company, an electric-vehicle maker, a computing-services company and a chipmaker reported after the close.

On Wednesday evening the President is listed to speak at 7:00 PM ET and the Bank of Korea rate decision at 9:00 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. On Thursday the Swiss central bank's meeting minutes are listed at 3:30 AM ET and the UK industrial orders survey at 6:00 AM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Weekly jobless claims are listed at 8:30 AM ET, with a forecast of 200,000 on the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, euro-area consumer confidence at 10:00 AM ET and a 5-year inflation-protected Treasury auction at 1:00 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed.

Later in the window, the FOMC statement is scheduled for 2:00 PM ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it, and An internet search company and a software maker report on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it, without a confirmed time. The calendar contains no Thursday, October 22, 2026 entry. In this review's judgment the first-order influence for ES on Thursday is the cash-session reaction to the after-close earnings releases, with the 8:30 AM ET jobless claims, listed by the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, the scheduled macro release.

8. Primary Trade Setup

Direction: Long

Rationale: The settle sits above every settlement average from the 5-day to the 200-day after three consecutive higher settles, the composite improved to 40 percent buy with direction described as strengthening, and the cash close sits above the modeled volatility threshold at SPX 7,750 and above the desk pivot at 7,690. A dip into Pivot S1 at 7,763.42 and one standard deviation support at 7,760.51 offers a long with a defined risk point beneath two standard deviations support at 7,744.04 and the 7,743.08 conversion of the desk note's SPX 7,700 support. Negative direction still leads on both directional systems and the gamma index is negative, so the setup is an analyst judgment that dips are bought after the earnings releases, not a measured edge.

Entry Zone: 7,760 to 7,768

Stop Loss: 7,740 (beneath two standard deviations support at 7,744.04 and the 7,743.08 dealer-positioning support conversion)

Target 1 (T1): 7,788 (just above the Pivot Point at 7,787.83)

Target 2 (T2): 7,812 (at the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week high at 7,811.65, just beneath Wednesday's 7,812.25 high)

Target 3 (T3, extended): 7,836 (beneath one standard deviation resistance at 7,839.99)

Risk-to-Reward: Approximately 1:1 to T1, 1:2 to T2, 1:3 to T3

Invalidation: A settle beneath two standard deviations support at 7,744.04 negates the thesis. Short of that, the edge is removed by acceptance beneath the entry band rather than by a touch, defined as two consecutive 30-minute closes beneath 7,760.

Macro override: A risk-off move on a confirmed Gulf escalation, or a reversal of the after-hours earnings reaction in the largest technology names, would pressure the contract. In that scenario a move through the 7,740 stop invalidates the long, and Pivot S2 at 7,726.58 and Pivot S3 at 7,702.17 become the references within one 14-day average true range of 79.80 points of the 7,740 stop (13.42 and 37.83 points beyond it).

Sources and methodology

This outlook is built from our session review of the December E-mini S&P 500 contract, the December ’26 contract, prepared after Wednesday’s close on October 21, 2026 for the Thursday, October 22, 2026 session. Wednesday’s completed extremes are the inputs behind the published pivot ladder: Pivot R3 at 7,885.92 less Pivot S3 at 7,702.17, divided by three, and Pivot R2 at 7,849.08 less Pivot S2 at 7,726.58, divided by two, both return 61.25, and three times the 7,787.83 Pivot Point less the settle gives a high-plus-low sum of 15,563.24, which the pair of 7,812.25 and 7,751.00 reproduces to the published rounding at 15,563.25. The provider’s settlement row and the chart’s completed Wednesday daily bar carry the same open, high, low and settle. Those figures and the review’s own statements are the only evidence used to grade Wednesday’s card. No intraday series is available for Wednesday, so no order of events within the session is stated. Tuesday’s volume now reads 1,718,580 contracts on the revised 2026-10-20 row, which replaces the preliminary 1,669,507 carried in Wednesday’s outlook, and that row’s open interest now reads 1,918,320; that post was not changed. Wednesday’s open interest was not yet reported. The chart’s 7,776.00 last, read after the 6:00 PM ET reopen with a change of minus 0.31 percent, is a Thursday-session quote; it reproduces the 7,800.25 previous close to the displayed rounding and is not used as Wednesday’s settle.

The moving averages were computed from the provider’s 259-session daily settlement series through Wednesday, with the partial Thursday row excluded; the oscillators are cited as published, read at 6:24 PM ET after the 6:00 PM ET reopen, so they may include the first minutes of the Thursday session. The desk note used is the 5:42 PM ET edition for Wednesday, October 21; its reference column carries Tuesday’s closes and its futures column a fixed 42.45 point translation, so cash equivalents here use the 43.08 point basis measured on Wednesday, settlement against cash close. The note’s implied one-day high and low pair is not centred on the reference and is excluded. The desk note’s gamma notional and the consoles’ call and put gamma are separate model measures from different timestamps; they are shown side by side, each with its source, and never combined. The consoles’ current-price and high and low volatility point fields are not used. The open, high and low after the 6:00 PM ET Wednesday reopen belong to the Thursday session. Scenario ranges are analyst judgment. Items marked unconfirmed come from the news-feed calendar, and every catalyst whose release time had passed at the time of writing is recorded as completed.

Wednesday’s outlook for this contract is here, and the Nasdaq-100 contract’s Wednesday outlook set the levels for the index that rose 1.13 percent in cash on Wednesday. Outlooks for ES, NQ, GC and CL are collected on the market outlook page, and our forward trading record is on the performance statement.
