S&P Futures 7,704.50: Short 7,740 to 7,748 on a Rebound

December S&P futures settled at 7,704.50, down 95.75 with a lower high and lower low. Levels, the 7,740 to 7,748 short and Friday's calendar.

At about 6:31 PM ET on Thursday the reopened Globex session quoted the December S&P 500 contract at 7,709.25, 4.75 points above Thursday’s 7,704.50 settle. That is a reopened-session quote, and the settlement stands. It came after a session in which the semiconductor index fell 6.72 percent and the Nasdaq-100 cash index 2.90 percent, while the Dow industrials closed up 0.02 percent. Friday’s short zone, 7,740 to 7,748, sits 30.75 points above that quote. One standard deviation resistance at 7,744.60 sits inside it.

Thursday broke lower on both ends. December E-mini futures settled at 7,704.50, down 95.75 points or 1.23 percent, after a 122.00 point session from 7,676.75 to 7,798.75. Lower high, lower low. The high sat 13.50 points under Wednesday’s 7,812.25 and the low 74.25 points under Wednesday’s 7,751.00. The drop ended a run of three higher settles. It was the largest one-day point decline since the 116.75 of 07/29. The settle finished at 22.75 percent of the range, which ran 1.49 times the 14-day average daily range of 81.91 points. The S&P 500 cash index closed at 7,663.43, down 93.74 or 1.21 percent. Technology led the drop.

At a glance

December S&P 500 futures settled at 7,704.50 on Thursday. That sits beneath the 5-day, 9-day, 20-day and 50-day settlement averages, from 7,739.75 to 7,785.10, and above the 100-day at about 7,695.2 and the 200-day at 7,410.63. The primary setup is a short from 7,740 to 7,748 around one standard deviation resistance at 7,744.60. The stop is 7,764. It sits above two standard deviations resistance at 7,761.20 and the 7,753.52 source pair of the modeled gamma-flip level, and the targets are 7,724, 7,704 and an extended 7,684. The whole band sits above the settle, its bottom 35.50 points up. The first target also sits above the settle, by 19.50 points, and the second 0.50 beneath it. Per the desk note’s model levels, the 7,663.43 cash close sits 48.57 points beneath the 7,712 modeled gamma-flip level (ES pair 7,753.52) and 96.57 beneath the 7,760 modeled volatility threshold (ES pair 7,801.52). In the review’s judgment the first-order influence for Friday is whether Thursday’s technology selling extends.

Thursday’s 7,676.75 low ran through the 7,760 to 7,768 band and the 7,740 stop

In Thursday’s outlook we set a long from 7,760 to 7,768. Its stop sat at 7,740. The targets were 7,788, 7,812 and an extended 7,836. Thursday’s completed bar, from the review and the dated 2026-10-22 row, opened at 7,797.00 at the Wednesday 6:00 PM ET reopen, marked a high of 7,798.75 and a low of 7,676.75, and settled at 7,704.50. The band traded. The open sat 29.00 points above the band top and the low 83.25 points beneath the band bottom, so the bar spans it. The stop traded too. The low printed 63.25 points beneath 7,740. No fill and no result is asserted.

The order is the part the bar cannot give. No intraday series is available for Thursday, so the daily bar fixes the open, the two extremes and the settle and nothing in between. It cannot say when the band printed, when the stop printed, or whether any target printed after the band. The first target, 7,788, sat 9.00 points beneath the 7,797.00 open and 10.75 beneath the high, so that price did trade. Whether it traded after the band is unknown. No result is attached to that print. The second target, 7,812, stayed 13.25 points above the high and the extended 7,836 stayed 37.25 above it. Neither printed.

The invalidation line was crossed at the settle. The card negated its thesis on a settle beneath two standard deviations support at 7,744.04, and the 7,704.50 settle finished 39.54 points beneath it. It also finished 35.50 beneath the old stop and 55.50 beneath the band bottom. The card’s acceptance test, two consecutive 30-minute closes beneath 7,760, needs 30-minute bars. None exist for Thursday. That test cannot be graded.

The macro override named two legs. The first was a risk-off move on a confirmed Gulf escalation. The review records no confirmed escalation; its Gulf items are news-feed statements, set out below. The second leg was a reversal of the after-hours earnings reaction in the largest technology names. The desk note’s narrative said the social-media company fell 8 percent on Thursday, and the semiconductor index fell 6.72 percent. Neither leg is drawn here as a cause of the decline. The override’s scenario, a move through the 7,740 stop, printed on the bar. Its references, Pivot S2 at 7,726.58 and Pivot S3 at 7,702.17, sat 49.83 and 25.42 points above the low. The settle finished 22.08 beneath S2 and 2.33 above S3.

None of our full-day ranges held. The high-range case of 7,720 to 7,880 lost its bottom by 43.25 points, the most likely 7,730 to 7,850 by 53.25 and the low-range 7,760 to 7,840 by 83.25. Every top held. The high stopped 41.25 beneath the low-range top. The session bands are another matter. The Globex band of 7,750 to 7,815 and the London band of 7,745 to 7,825 cannot be graded, because the daily bar cannot place either extreme in a session. The low also sat 53.25 beneath the morning band’s 7,730 bottom and 43.25 beneath the afternoon band’s 7,720 bottom. The bar cannot say in which session it printed.

The weighted path broke. Thursday’s outlook expected a hold between Pivot S2 at 7,726.58 and Pivot R2 at 7,849.08, with a dip toward the band that holds above two standard deviations support at 7,744.04 weighted slightly above a break lower. The low finished 49.83 points beneath S2. The named alternative was a risk-off move that carries the contract beneath Pivot S2 toward the 7,709.45 source pair of the modeled gamma-flip level. The bar reached beneath both. The low sat 32.70 under that pair and the settle 4.95 under it; the review ties no headline to the move. We grade the card as written. The band traded, the stop traded, the second and third targets never printed, and the settle finished 55.50 points beneath the band.

One standard deviation resistance at 7,744.60, the 7,740 to 7,748 band and the 7,764 stop

The basis narrowed. Thursday’s 7,704.50 settle less the 7,663.43 cash close measures 41.07 points, against 43.08 on Wednesday, and every cash equivalent in this article uses the new figure. The desk note keeps its own 41.52 point offset, so its published futures pairs differ: 7,941.52 for the 7,900 call-side ceiling, 8,041.52 for the 8,000 gamma concentration, 7,801.52 for the 7,760 modeled volatility threshold, 7,753.52 for the 7,712 modeled gamma-flip level and 7,691.52 for the 7,650 put-side support base.

Resistance starts 2.24 points up, at the 38.2 percent retracement from the 13-week high at 7,706.74. The Pivot Point at 7,726.67 (cash 7,685.60) follows, 22.17 points above the settle, with the 7,731.07 conversion of the desk note’s 7,690 pivot and the 5-day average at 7,739.75 just above it. Then the band group. The 7,741.07 conversion of the note’s 7,700 resistance and one standard deviation resistance at 7,744.60 (cash 7,703.53) both sit inside the 7,740 to 7,748 band. Wednesday’s 7,751.00 low (cash 7,709.93) and the 7,753.52 flip-level pair (cash 7,712) sit 3.00 and 5.52 points above its top.

The stop group is dense. The 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low at 7,758.60, the 7,761.07 conversion of the note’s 7,720 resistance and two standard deviations resistance at 7,761.20 (cash 7,720.13) sit beneath the 7,764 stop. Two crossing prices bracket it. The 40-day crossing price for Friday at 7,763.28 sits 0.72 beneath the stop and the 9-day crossing price at 7,764.47 sits 0.47 above it. Above the stop come the 50-day average at 7,769.70, three standard deviations resistance at 7,773.95 (cash 7,732.88), the 9-day average at 7,774.86 and Pivot R1 at 7,776.58 (cash 7,735.51).

The upper band runs to Thursday’s open. The 20-day average at 7,785.10 and the 50 percent retracement of the four-week range at 7,785.13 sit together, then the 7,787.42 top of the one-range frame, the 18-day crossing price at 7,789.38 and the 7,791.07 conversion of the note’s 7,750 resistance. Four prints sit tight above them. Thursday’s 7,797.00 open (cash 7,755.93), its 7,798.75 high (cash 7,757.68), Wednesday’s 7,800.25 settle (cash 7,759.18) and the 7,801.52 threshold pair (cash 7,760) follow inside 4.52 points. Wednesday’s 7,812.25 high (cash 7,771.18), the 7,841.07 conversion of the note’s 7,800 resistance and Pivot R2 at 7,848.67 (cash 7,807.60) close the near list.

The extended references sit higher. The one-month high at 7,897.50 (cash 7,856.43), Pivot R3 at 7,898.58 (cash 7,857.51) and the 52-week and 13-week high of 7,905.00 (cash 7,863.93) lead them. The last sits 200.50 points or 2.60 percent above the settle. The 7,941.52 ceiling pair (cash 7,900) and the 8,041.52 concentration pair (cash 8,000) complete the list.

Support starts 0.53 points down, at the published target price of 7,703.97 (cash 7,662.90). The 100-day average sits at about 7,695.2, about 9.3 points beneath the settle, then the 7,691.52 put-side pair (cash 7,650). Three lows come next. Thursday’s 7,676.75 low (cash 7,635.68), the 10/16 low of 7,676.00 (cash 7,634.93) and the one-month low at 7,672.75 (cash 7,631.68) sit within 4.00 points. One standard deviation support at 7,664.40 (cash 7,623.33) and Pivot S1 at 7,654.58 (cash 7,613.51) lead the next band, with two standard deviations support at 7,647.80 (cash 7,606.73) and the 50 percent retracement of the 13-week range at 7,645.50 just beneath. The 7,641.07 conversion of the note’s 7,600 support and three standard deviations support at 7,635.05 (cash 7,593.98) follow.

The deeper band sits lower still. The 7,621.58 bottom of the one-range frame and Pivot S2 at 7,604.67 (cash 7,563.60) lead it, then the 38.2 percent retracement from the 13-week low at 7,584.26 and Pivot S3 at 7,532.58 (cash 7,491.51). The 7,491.07 conversion of the note’s 7,450 support sits beneath them. The 200-day average sits 293.87 points down at 7,410.63, and the 13-week low at 7,386.00.

Four averages sit above the settle. The 5-day stands 35.25 points over it, the 9-day 70.36, the 20-day 80.60 and the 50-day 65.20. The 100-day sits about 9.3 beneath and the 200-day 293.87 beneath. The 5-day fell 17.30 points from Wednesday’s 7,757.05 as the 10/15 settle of 7,791.00 left the window and 7,704.50 replaced it. The 20-day fell about 3 points when the 09/24 settle of 7,767.00 dropped out. The 50-day fell 2.65 from 7,772.35. The longer stack still rises. The 30 older settlements in the 50-day window averaged 7,759.43, beneath the latest 20, which keeps the 20-day above the 50-day. Older windows sit lower. The 50 older settlements in the 100-day window averaged 7,620.71, and the 100 older settlements in the 200-day window 7,126.06. For Friday the averages would be crossed at 7,764.47 for the 9-day, 7,789.38 for the 18-day and 7,763.28 for the 40-day.

Momentum sits under the midline. On the provider’s published readings, relative strength reads 40.24 on the 9-day, 43.86 on the 14-day and 46.30 on the 20-day. The raw stochastic reads 13.51 percent on the 9-day and 12.87 percent on the 14-day, and the smoothed 14-day %K at 35.22 percent sits just above %D at 33.79 percent. Negative direction leads on both windows. On the 9-day it reads 26.74 against 11.62 with the ADX at 24.09; on the 14-day, 25.38 against 13.69 with the ADX at a low 15.56. Historic volatility reads 10.65 percent on the 9-day and 10.30 percent on the 14-day. Those readings were taken at about 6:31 PM ET after the 6:00 PM ET reopen. They may include the first minutes of the Friday session.

The composite multi-indicator read published for Friday is hold, against 40 percent buy in the prior session’s snapshot, with direction described as steady and no strength label displayed. It read 16 percent buy a week ago and 56 percent buy a month ago. The short-horizon group averages 40 percent sell and the medium-horizon group 25 percent sell. The long-horizon group reads 67 percent buy. The trend indicator reads buy.

Ranges ran wide. The 14-day average true range stands at 82.92 points and the 14-day average daily range at 81.91. The 9-day figures are 86.09 and 88.17 and the 20-day figures 81.35 and 80.35. Thursday’s 122.00 point range was 1.49 times the 14-day average daily range and the widest since the 133.50 of 10/16. One average true range either side of the settle frames Friday between 7,621.58 and 7,787.42. The deviation bands are tighter. They run 7,664.40 to 7,744.60 at one deviation, 7,647.80 to 7,761.20 at two and 7,635.05 to 7,773.95 at three. Built from five settlements, they describe settlement dispersion only. A headline gap can open outside any of them. The desk note’s implied one-day move of 0.60 percent equals about 45.98 points on the 7,663.43 cash close.

Zoom out. Daily ranges over the last ten sessions ran 53.50, 40.75, 29.50, 138.75, 84.50, 133.50, 96.25, 87.00, 61.25 and 122.00 points. Settlement changes over the same stretch read plus 43.50, minus 1.75, minus 2.25, minus 85.50, plus 20.75, minus 86.75, plus 30.25, plus 20.75, plus 45.00 and minus 95.75. The bar left a 92.50 point body. Its upper shadow above the open measures 1.75 points and its lower shadow beneath the settle 27.75. Settlements over those ten sessions ran 7,859.75, 7,858.00, 7,855.75, 7,770.25, 7,791.00, 7,704.25, 7,734.50, 7,755.25, 7,800.25 and 7,704.50. Thursday returned to within 0.25 point of the 10/16 settle. The settle and the low were the lowest since 10/16, when the contract traded down to 7,676.00. Session highs over six sessions read 7,801.75, 7,809.50, 7,773.25, 7,791.50, 7,812.25 and 7,798.75, and session lows 7,717.25, 7,676.00, 7,677.00, 7,704.50, 7,751.00 and 7,676.75. No four-hour series and no prior-quarter extremes were captured. Swing structure rests on daily bars. The 13-week high of 7,905.00 and the 13-week low of 7,386.00 are the outer references, and the one-month low of 7,672.75 sits 4.00 points beneath Thursday’s low.

Chip shares fell 6.72 percent as the volatility index rose to 19.03

Thursday’s bar carries no clock. It opened at 7,797.00 at the Wednesday 6:00 PM ET reopen, 3.25 points beneath Wednesday’s settle, and settled 92.50 points beneath that open. No intraday series exists for the session. The news items below keep their own times, and none is tied to a price move.

The decline was narrow. The Nasdaq-100 cash index fell 2.90 percent and the semiconductor index 6.72 percent against 1.21 percent for the S&P 500 cash index. The Dow industrials closed at 52,867.98, up 0.02 percent, and the NYSE composite at 24,275.53, up 0.09 percent. In the review’s interpretation that gap between the price-weighted and broad indexes and the capitalisation-weighted index describes a decline concentrated in large technology shares. No sector-level flow data was captured to measure it.

The earnings story carried over from Wednesday night. A social-media company reported after Wednesday’s close. On Thursday the news feed carried items that its future spending commitments had risen to 825 billion dollars and that a gauge of its credit risk had reached a fresh high on its artificial-intelligence spending plans. The feed’s market wraps described stocks falling on doubts over whether heavy artificial-intelligence investment can deliver sufficient returns. Then the note. The desk note’s narrative said the company fell 8 percent despite beating revenue expectations as its credit risk reached a record high. The captured news feed carried no mega-cap result released after Thursday’s close.

Gulf headlines ran through the day. From 8:01 AM ET to 8:02 AM ET the news feed carried Houthi claims of attacks on Saudi targets, including the Defence Ministry in Riyadh and the state oil company’s facility at Yanbu. A warning came first. At 3:09 AM ET the feed had carried a warning from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards navy of confrontation against US regional bases. At 1:17 PM ET the feed carried a State Department statement reaffirming US commitment to freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Then the evening item. After the close, at 4:43 PM ET, it carried the President’s invocation of the Defense Production Act for petroleum capacity. These are statements carried by the news feed rather than events confirmed for this review. No causal link to the index is drawn.

The reopened Globex session quoted the December contract at 7,709.25 at about 6:31 PM ET, and the chart showed 7,710.25 at about 6:33 PM ET. The Friday session’s first prints on the provider’s overview were an open of 7,706.25, a high of 7,711.25 and a low of 7,702.00. Those are reopened-session quotes. The settlement stays at 7,704.50, and none of them belongs to Thursday’s range.

Yields fell. The ten-year yield index closed at 4.95 percent against 5.14 percent, the thirty-year at 5.29 percent against 5.43 percent and the 13-week bill yield index at 4.02 percent against 4.06 percent. The dollar index closed at 101.61, down 0.17. Weekly jobless claims printed at 194,000 against a 200,000 forecast at 8:30 AM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The 5-year inflation-protected Treasury auction at 1:00 PM ET drew a high yield of 2.367 percent against 1.955 percent previously, also per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The news feed carried an item that traders no longer fully price a Fed rate increase before year-end. The FOMC statement is scheduled for 2:00 PM ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it.

Implied volatility jumped. The volatility index closed at 19.03 against 16.68, up 2.35 points or 14.09 percent. The volatility-of-volatility index closed at 107.94 against 94.55 and the Nasdaq volatility index at 28.72 against 24.42. The desk note said the volatility index and the volatility-of-volatility index both rose 14 percent. Oil moved the other way. Brent’s December contract rose 4.0 percent to 113.17 and December WTI 2.39 percent to 99.47, while December gold fell 2.16 percent.

Activity jumped too. Thursday’s December volume was 2,182,993 contracts on the 2026-10-22 row, against 1,680,253 on the revised 2026-10-21 row, a rise of 502,740 or 29.9 percent. The decline came on higher volume. Our Thursday outlook carried the preliminary 1,618,838 for Wednesday. Wednesday’s open interest now reads 1,917,749 on the revised 2026-10-21 row; that outlook said it was not yet reported. Thursday’s open interest was not yet reported. No weekly positioning report was captured for this session.

The cash close sits beneath both model lines. The desk note used is the 5:22 PM ET edition for Thursday, read at 8:58 PM ET, and its reference prices are Wednesday’s closes: its 7,757 index reference equals Wednesday’s 7,757.17 cash close. Its narrative states a close of 7,663, down 1 percent. That is consistent with the provider’s 7,663.43 close, which this article uses.

Now the distances, in cash. The close sits 48.57 points beneath the 7,712 modeled gamma-flip level (ES pair 7,753.52) and 96.57 beneath the 7,760 modeled volatility threshold (ES pair 7,801.52). It sits 13.43 above the 7,650 put-side support base (ES pair 7,691.52) and 236.57 beneath the 7,900 call-side ceiling (ES pair 7,941.52). The largest gamma concentration sits at 8,000 (ES pair 8,041.52). In the desk note’s model, gamma tilt reads 1.141 and gamma notional plus 551.543 million dollars. The modeled threshold and flip level are model outputs; neither is an option strike.

The note draws its own map. Its summary lists resistance at 7,700, 7,720, 7,750 and 7,800, support at 7,650, 7,600 and 7,450 and a desk pivot at 7,690, with key strikes at 8,000, 7,000, 7,700 and 7,800, all in cash. The close sits 26.57 points beneath that desk pivot. At the measured basis the pivot converts to 7,731.07 and the 7,700 resistance to 7,741.07. Then the narrative. Per the narrative, a rout in technology shares and rising oil prices sent the market lower, with the Nasdaq down 3 percent, a megacap fund down 3 percent and a semiconductor fund down 7 percent. In the same account the equal-weighted index fund rose 1 percent and the long-bond fund 2 percent, and the S&P 500 traded within an 86 basis point range. The note described index options flow that finished relatively flat with net buying of longer-dated puts. It also said fixed-strike implied volatility rose 1 to 3 vol points across expirations. Those characterisations are the note’s. The console data carry no trade side, and no directional read is drawn from them here.

The note’s implied one-day move is 0.60 percent, about 45.98 points on the 7,663.43 close. The implied five-day move is 1.15 percent. Its published implied one-day high and low of 7,734.68 and 7,642.42 are centred near 7,688.55, neither the reference nor the close, so that pair is excluded. The note itself says that with the index beneath its desk pivot, short-dated volatility sellers may be forced to sell into declines. The consoles add detail. The S&P 500 positioning console, read at about 8:59 PM ET with a page date of 2026-10-22, shows model call gamma of minus 4.03 billion against put gamma of minus 3.53 billion. It puts one-month implied volatility at 13.04 percent against realised volatility of 8.90 percent, the implied-volatility rank at 17.18 percent, the skew rank at 77.20 percent and the put-to-call open-interest ratio at 1.47. A second console follows. The console for the S&P 500 exchange-traded fund shows call gamma of minus 3.04 billion against put gamma of minus 3.70 billion, a skew rank of 83.60 percent and a put-to-call open-interest ratio of 2.06.

Two gamma measures appear here. The desk note’s gamma notional and the consoles’ gamma fields come from different models and timestamps. They are not reconciled here, and neither is summed with the other. The consoles’ live price fields and high and low volatility point fields were not used.

Damping is the question for Friday. In this review’s interpretation a cash close beneath both the modeled gamma-flip level and the modeled volatility threshold, and beneath the desk pivot, describes an environment where dealer hedging is less likely to dampen moves. That reading carries no direction of its own. The primary setup sells the 7,740 to 7,748 band beneath the 7,753.52 source pair of the flip level. There the 7,741.07 conversion overlaps one standard deviation resistance, and the 7,764 stop clears that pair.

The trade map for Friday

The primary setup is a short from 7,740 to 7,748. The settle sits beneath the 5-day through 50-day settlement averages, and negative direction leads on the 9-day and 14-day directional systems. The composite slipped to hold. Thursday’s decline settled in the lower quarter of a range 1.49 times the 14-day average daily range. Now the band. It holds one standard deviation resistance at 7,744.60, 4.60 points above its bottom and 3.40 beneath its top, and the 7,741.07 conversion of the desk note’s 7,700 resistance. The whole band sits above the settle. Its bottom sits 35.50 points up and 13.33 above the Pivot Point at 7,726.67. Then the stop. It sits at 7,764, 2.80 above two standard deviations resistance at 7,761.20, 5.40 above the 38.2 percent retracement at 7,758.60 and 10.48 above the 7,753.52 flip-level pair. Targets step down. The first, 7,724, sits 2.67 beneath the Pivot Point and still 19.50 above the settle. The second, 7,704, sits 0.50 beneath Thursday’s 7,704.50 settle and 0.03 above the published target price at 7,703.97. The extended 7,684 sits 7.25 above Thursday’s 7,676.75 low. The evidence against is plain. The broad market held up, with the Dow and the NYSE composite higher, and the settle sits above the 100-day average. The review calls the setup an analyst judgment that rallies are sold while technology leadership is under pressure. No measured edge stands behind it.

Primary setup for Friday
Direction
Short
Entry Zone
7,740 to 7,748 (cash 7,698.93 to 7,706.93), around one standard deviation resistance at 7,744.60 and the 7,741.07 conversion of the desk note’s 7,700 resistance, above the Pivot Point at 7,726.67
Stop Loss
7,764 (cash 7,722.93), above two standard deviations resistance at 7,761.20 and the 38.2 percent retracement at 7,758.60
Target 1
7,724 (cash 7,682.93), beneath the Pivot Point at 7,726.67
Target 2
7,704 (cash 7,662.93), just beneath Thursday’s 7,704.50 settle and above the published target price at 7,703.97
Target 3 (extended)
7,684 (cash 7,642.93), above Thursday’s 7,676.75 low
Risk-to-Reward
Approximately 1:1 to T1, 1:2 to T2 and 1:3 to T3, measured from the 7,744 midpoint of the entry zone against the 7,764 stop, a risk of 20 points
Invalidation
A settle above two standard deviations resistance at 7,761.20 negates the thesis. Short of that, the edge is removed by acceptance above the entry band, defined as two consecutive 30-minute closes above 7,748; a touch alone does not remove it
Macro override
A broad reversal in technology shares, or a de-escalation in the Gulf that lifts risk appetite, would undercut the short. In that scenario a move through the 7,764 stop invalidates the setup before the targets, and three standard deviations resistance at 7,773.95 and Pivot R1 at 7,776.58 become the references, 9.95 and 12.58 points beyond the stop and inside one 14-day average true range of 82.92 points
Status at Thursday’s settle
7,704.50, 35.50 points beneath the band bottom; the reopened session quoted 7,709.25 at about 6:31 PM ET, 30.75 beneath it

Now the arithmetic. From the 7,744 midpoint the risk to the stop is 20 points, 24.1 percent of the 14-day average true range of 82.92. The targets sit 20, 40 and 60 points beneath the midpoint. Exact multiples. The band sits wholly above the settle, its bottom 35.50 points up and its top 43.50. So the first target, 7,724, also sits above the settle, 19.50 points over it. Only the second and third sit beneath it. A one-range frame from the settle, 7,621.58 to 7,787.42, ends 23.42 points above the stop and reaches 62.42 beneath the extended target. Two details stand out. The 9-day crossing price at 7,764.47 sits 0.47 above the stop. The 40-day crossing price at 7,763.28 sits 0.72 beneath it.

The session bands are the review’s analyst judgment. Through the Thursday night session, from 6:00 PM ET to 3:00 AM ET, the review expects roughly 7,665 to 7,745, with a bias neutral to lower beneath the Pivot Point at 7,726.67. London, from 3:00 AM to 8:00 AM ET, runs roughly 7,655 to 7,760, also neutral to lower. There the review names Pivot S1 at 7,654.58 the first meaningful support beneath the 7,676.75 low and two standard deviations resistance at 7,761.20 the first meaningful resistance above the band. The cash-session bands are wider. The morning band, 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM ET, runs roughly 7,645 to 7,775, between two standard deviations support at 7,647.80 and three standard deviations resistance at 7,773.95. The afternoon band, 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM ET, runs 7,635 to 7,790. In the review’s judgment a Friday close carries weekend headline exposure that can keep positioning light into the close. The scenario ranges, also analyst judgment, run 7,665 to 7,745 for the low-range case, 7,645 to 7,775 for the mid-range case, the most likely, and 7,605 to 7,800 for the high-range case.

Friday’s calendar starts Thursday night. Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Thursday. Australia’s flash composite purchasing managers’ index printed at 6:00 PM ET at 47.7 against 51.3 previously, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Japan’s consumer prices are listed at 7:30 PM ET and its flash purchasing managers’ surveys at 8:30 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Europe follows. The French, German, euro-area and UK flash surveys are listed between 3:15 AM ET and 4:30 AM ET, with the euro-area release at 4:00 AM ET and the UK at 4:30 AM ET, all per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed.

Then the US morning. Canadian retail sales are listed at 8:30 AM ET and the US flash purchasing managers’ surveys at 9:45 AM ET, with a composite forecast of 57.4 against 58.4 previously, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The final University of Michigan sentiment survey is listed at 10:00 AM ET, also per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The afternoon is quiet. The captured calendars list no scheduled US release between noon and the 4:00 PM ET cash close, and no mega-cap earnings entry for Friday. A rating decision on France is listed as tentative at 4:00 PM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The calendar lists no Friday, October 23, 2026 entry of its own. The weekend comes next. The market closes after Friday’s session and Globex reopens at 6:00 PM ET on Sunday, so two days of headline exposure separate Friday’s close from the reopen. Two dates follow. The FOMC statement is scheduled for 2:00 PM ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it. GDP comes a day later. The advance estimate of third-quarter GDP and the September personal income and outlays report are set for 8:30 AM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as the calendar lists them. In this review’s judgment the first-order influence for the S&P 500 on Friday is whether Thursday’s technology selling extends, with the 9:45 AM ET US flash surveys, listed by the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, the main scheduled release.

One path is weighted. In this review’s analyst judgment the most probable path holds the contract between Pivot S2 at 7,604.67 and Pivot R1 at 7,776.58. In the same judgment, a rebound toward the 7,740 to 7,748 band that fails beneath two standard deviations resistance at 7,761.20 is weighted slightly above a recovery. It rests on judgment. The review weighs it that way because the settle sits beneath the 5-day through 50-day averages, negative direction leads on both directional systems, the composite slipped from 40 percent buy to hold and the volatility index rose to 19.03. One alternative is named. A reversal of Thursday’s technology selling, supported by the broad market’s resilience, could carry the contract above Pivot R1 at 7,776.58 toward Thursday’s 7,798.75 high and would invalidate the reading. The review names the counterweights. The settle sits above the 100-day and 200-day averages, %K sits above %D and the Dow industrials closed higher, so a rebound before any extension is a live alternative.

Thursday’s low ran 63.25 points through the old stop; Friday’s band sits 35.50 points above the settle, at one standard deviation resistance.

1. Executive Summary

The December S&P 500 contract settled at 7,704.50 on Thursday, down 95.75 or 1.23 percent from Wednesday's settle of 7,800.25, after trading between 7,798.75 and 7,676.75, a 122.00 point daily range. The settle finished at 22.75 percent of the range, and the 122.00 point range was 1.49 times the published 14-day average daily range of 81.91 points. Thursday printed a lower high and a lower low against Wednesday and ended a run of three consecutive higher settles. The 95.75 point decline was the largest one-day point decline since the 116.75 point decline of 07/29, the range was the widest since the 133.50 point range of 10/16, and the settle and the low were the lowest since 10/16, when the contract settled at 7,704.25 and traded down to 7,676.00.

The S&P 500 cash index closed at 7,663.43, down 93.74 or 1.21 percent, while the Nasdaq-100 cash index fell 2.90 percent and the semiconductor index 6.72 percent; the Dow industrials closed up 0.02 percent and the NYSE composite up 0.09 percent, so the index decline was concentrated in technology. The news feed carried items on a social-media company's future spending commitments rising to 825 billion dollars and on its credit risk gauge reaching a fresh high, following Wednesday's after-close results, and its market wraps described doubts over returns on heavy artificial-intelligence investment alongside escalating Middle East tensions.

The ten-year yield index fell to 4.95 percent from 5.14 percent, the dollar index eased to 101.61, and the volatility index rose to 19.03 from 16.68. Brent's December contract rose 4.0 percent to 113.17 alongside Gulf headlines, and after the close the news feed carried at 4:43 PM ET the President's invocation of the Defense Production Act for petroleum capacity. These items coincided with the session and its aftermath; no intraday series is available, so no move is attributed to any one of them.

The settle sits beneath the 5-day, 9-day, 20-day and 50-day settlement averages and above the 100-day and 200-day, negative direction leads on both directional systems, and the composite multi-indicator read is hold, down from 40 percent buy a session earlier. The published 14-day average true range is 82.92 points. The cash close sits 48.57 points beneath the modeled gamma-flip level at SPX 7,712 and 96.57 points beneath the modeled volatility threshold at SPX 7,760, per the evening desk note. The primary setup is a short from the 7,740 to 7,748 band around one standard deviation resistance at 7,744.60, stopped at 7,764 above two standard deviations resistance at 7,761.20, with objectives at 7,724, 7,704 and an extended 7,684.

2. Price Action & Technical Structure

2.1 Intraday and Session Review

The Thursday session opened at 7,797.00 at the Wednesday 6:00 PM ET reopen, 3.25 points beneath Wednesday's settle, marked a daily high of 7,798.75 and a daily low of 7,676.75, and settled at 7,704.50. No intraday series is available for this session, so this review does not describe the order in which the high and the low printed, and no timed price path is asserted; the daily bar alone fixes the open, the extremes and the settle.

This review records only that the 7,798.75 high and the 7,676.75 low both belong to Thursday's completed session and that the settle sits 27.75 points above the low and 94.25 points beneath the high.

Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Thursday for the Friday session, so the open, high and low shown on the provider's overview, 7,706.25, 7,711.25 and 7,702.00, belong to the new Friday session and are not Thursday's range. The provider's latest quote at about 6:31 PM ET was 7,709.25, 4.75 points above the settle, and the chart showed 7,710.25 at about 6:33 PM ET; these are reopened-session quotes, not settlements.

Thursday's completed-session extremes are taken from the settlement row, and they are also the completed-session inputs behind the published pivot ladder rather than an independently read bar. Pivot R3 at 7,898.58 minus Pivot S3 at 7,532.58, divided by three, returns 122.00, and Pivot R2 at 7,848.67 minus Pivot S2 at 7,604.67, divided by two, returns the same 122.00. Three times the Pivot Point of 7,726.67 less the 7,704.50 settle gives a high plus low sum of 15,475.51, which the pair of 7,798.75 and 7,676.75 reproduces to the published rounding at 15,475.50, and that pair reproduces all seven published rungs.

The provider's settlement row and the chart's completed daily bar carry the same 7,797.00 open, 7,798.75 high, 7,676.75 low and 7,704.50 settle.

2.2 Daily Structure

Thursday printed a lower high and a lower low: the 7,798.75 high sits 13.50 points beneath Wednesday's 7,812.25, and the 7,676.75 low sits 74.25 points beneath Wednesday's 7,751.00. The settle beneath the 7,797.00 open leaves a body of 92.50 points, an upper shadow of 1.75 points above the open and a lower shadow of 27.75 points beneath the settle.

Settlements over the last ten sessions ran 7,859.75, 7,858.00, 7,855.75, 7,770.25, 7,791.00, 7,704.25, 7,734.50, 7,755.25 and 7,800.25 before Thursday's 7,704.50, so Thursday ended a run of three consecutive higher settles and returned to within 0.25 point of the 10/16 settle. The sequence of session highs over the last six sessions reads 7,801.75, 7,809.50, 7,773.25, 7,791.50, 7,812.25 and 7,798.75, and the sequence of session lows reads 7,717.25, 7,676.00, 7,677.00, 7,704.50, 7,751.00 and 7,676.75.

The one-month low sits at 7,672.75, 4.00 points beneath Thursday's low, and the 13-week low at 7,386.00. The one-month high of 7,897.50 and the 13-week and 52-week high of 7,905.00 frame the upper side. No prior-quarter high or low was captured for this session, so the 13-week extremes serve as the available quarterly reference.

2.3 4-Hour and Swing Structure

Daily ranges for the last ten sessions ran 53.50, 40.75, 29.50, 138.75, 84.50, 133.50, 96.25, 87.00, 61.25 and 122.00. The settlement changes over the same ten sessions read plus 43.50, minus 1.75, minus 2.25, minus 85.50, plus 20.75, minus 86.75, plus 30.25, plus 20.75, plus 45.00 and minus 95.75.

The retracement grid published for Friday places the 38.2 percent retracement from the 13-week high at 7,706.74, 2.24 points above the settle, and the 50 percent retracement of the 13-week range at 7,645.50 beneath it. Further beneath, the 38.2 percent retracement from the 13-week low sits at 7,584.26, and above, the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low sits at 7,758.60 and the 50 percent retracement of the four-week range at 7,785.13. No four-hour series was captured for this session, so swing structure here rests on daily bars only.

2.4 Moving Averages

The averages cited in this subsection were computed from the provider's daily settlement series for the December contract, which holds 259 completed sessions through Thursday; the partial Friday row that appeared after the 6:00 PM ET reopen is excluded. The 5-day average stands at 7,739.75, the 9-day at 7,774.86, the 20-day at 7,785.10, the 50-day at 7,769.70, the 100-day at about 7,695.2 and the 200-day at 7,410.63.

The 7,704.50 settle sits 35.25 points beneath the 5-day average, 70.36 points beneath the 9-day, 80.60 points beneath the 20-day and 65.20 points beneath the 50-day, and about 9.3 points above the 100-day and 293.87 points above the 200-day. The 5-day average fell 17.30 from Wednesday's 7,757.05, because the 10/15 settle of 7,791.00 left the window and was replaced by 7,704.50. The 20-day fell about 3 points, because the 09/24 settle of 7,767.00 left that window, and the 50-day fell 2.65 from 7,772.35.

The 20-day average sits above the 50-day because the last 20 settlements averaged 7,785.10 against 7,769.70 for the full 50, which means the 30 older settlements in the 50-day window averaged lower, at 7,759.43. The 50-day sits above the 100-day because the 50 older settlements in the 100-day window averaged lower, at 7,620.71, and the 100-day sits above the 200-day because the 100 older settlements in the 200-day window averaged lower, at 7,126.06. The projection grid gives the prices at which each average would be crossed on Friday: 7,764.47 for the 9-day, 7,789.38 for the 18-day and 7,763.28 for the 40-day.

2.5 Oscillator and Trend Readings

The oscillator figures below are as published on the provider's technical page, read at about 6:31 PM ET after the 6:00 PM ET reopen, so they may include the first minutes of the Friday session rather than the settle alone; they are the provider's published readings, and none was computed for this review. As published, the 9-day relative strength reads 40.24, the 14-day relative strength 43.86 and the 20-day relative strength 46.30.

The 9-day raw stochastic reads 13.51 percent and the 14-day raw stochastic 12.87 percent, while the 14-day stochastic %K reads 35.22 percent and the 14-day stochastic %D 33.79 percent, so %K sits just above %D in the lower part of the range.

The 9-day directional index ADX reads 24.09 with the 9-day +DI at 11.62 and the 9-day -DI at 26.74; the 14-day directional index ADX reads 15.56 with the 14-day +DI at 13.69 and the 14-day -DI at 25.38, so negative direction leads on both, with low trend strength on the 14-day. The 9-day historic volatility reads 10.65 percent and the 14-day historic volatility 10.30 percent.

The composite multi-indicator read published for the Friday session is hold, against 40 percent buy in the prior session's snapshot, with direction described as steady and no strength label displayed. The snapshot history reads 16 percent buy a week ago and 56 percent buy a month ago. The short-horizon group averages 40 percent sell, the medium-horizon group 25 percent sell and the long-horizon group 67 percent buy, and the composite trend indicator reads buy.

2.6 Volatility and Expected Range

The published 14-day average true range stands at 82.92 points and the 14-day average daily range at 81.91 points; the 9-day average true range is 86.09 with a 9-day average daily range of 88.17, and the 20-day average true range is 81.35 with a 20-day average daily range of 80.35. Thursday's 122.00 point range was 1.49 times the 14-day average daily range.

Adding and subtracting the 14-day average true range of 82.92 points from the 7,704.50 settle frames Friday between 7,621.58 and 7,787.42. The published standard-deviation bands are built from five settlements: one deviation spans 7,664.40 to 7,744.60, two spans 7,647.80 to 7,761.20 and three spans 7,635.05 to 7,773.95. These bands describe settlement dispersion, not intraday reach, and a headline gap can open outside any of them.

3. Key Levels

3.1 Resistance

Above the 7,704.50 settle, the first listed overhead reference is the 38.2 percent retracement from the 13-week high at 7,706.74, followed by the Pivot Point at 7,726.67 and one standard deviation resistance at 7,744.60. The 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low at 7,758.60, two standard deviations resistance at 7,761.20 and the 9-day average crossing price at 7,764.47 come next, then three standard deviations resistance at 7,773.95 and Pivot R1 at 7,776.58. The 50 percent retracement of the four-week range at 7,785.13, the 18-day average crossing price at 7,789.38 and Thursday's 7,798.75 high form the band above, with Wednesday's 7,800.25 settle and Pivot R2 at 7,848.67 the extended references.

3.2 Support

Beneath the settle sits the published target price at 7,703.97, then Thursday's 7,676.75 low, the 10/16 low of 7,676.00 and the one-month low at 7,672.75. One standard deviation support at 7,664.40 and Pivot S1 at 7,654.58 form the next band, with two standard deviations support at 7,647.80 and the 50 percent retracement of the 13-week range at 7,645.50 just beneath. Three standard deviations support at 7,635.05 and Pivot S2 at 7,604.67 form the deeper band, with the 38.2 percent retracement from the 13-week low at 7,584.26 and Pivot S3 at 7,532.58 the extended references.

4. Macro Drivers

4.1 Dollar, Rates, and Fed Policy

The ten-year yield index fell to 4.95 percent from 5.14 percent, the thirty-year to 5.29 percent from 5.43 percent and the 13-week bill yield index to 4.02 percent from 4.06 percent. The dollar index closed at 101.61, down 0.17. Weekly jobless claims printed at 194,000 against a 200,000 forecast at 8:30 AM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed against the calendar, and the 5-year inflation-protected Treasury auction at 1:00 PM ET drew a high yield of 2.367 percent against 1.955 percent previously, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed against the calendar. The news feed carried an item that traders no longer fully price a Fed rate increase before year-end. The FOMC statement is scheduled for 2:00 PM ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it.

4.2 Large-Cap Leadership and Earnings

A social-media company reported after Wednesday's close, as our Thursday outlook recorded, and on Thursday the news feed carried items that its future spending commitments had risen to 825 billion dollars and that a gauge of its credit risk had reached a fresh high on its artificial-intelligence spending plans. The news feed's market wraps described stocks falling on doubts over whether heavy artificial-intelligence investment can deliver sufficient returns. The captured news feed carried no mega-cap result released after Thursday's close.

4.3 Geopolitical Backdrop

The news feed carried at 8:01 AM ET to 8:02 AM ET Houthi claims of attacks on Saudi targets, including the Defence Ministry in Riyadh and the state oil company's facility at Yanbu, after a 3:09 AM ET warning from Iran's Revolutionary Guards navy of confrontation against US regional bases, and at 1:17 PM ET a State Department statement reaffirming US commitment to freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. After the close, at 4:43 PM ET, it carried the President's invocation of the Defense Production Act for petroleum capacity. These are statements carried by the news feed rather than events confirmed for this review.

4.4 Sector Breadth and Rotation

The Dow industrials closed at 52,867.98, up 0.02 percent, and the NYSE composite at 24,275.53, up 0.09 percent, against a 1.21 percent decline in the S&P 500 cash index, a 2.90 percent decline in the Nasdaq-100 cash index and a 6.72 percent decline in the semiconductor index. In this review's interpretation the gap between the price-weighted and broad indexes and the capitalisation-weighted index describes a decline concentrated in large technology shares; no sector-level flow data was captured to measure it.

4.5 Cross-Asset and Volatility

The volatility index closed at 19.03 against 16.68, the volatility-of-volatility index at 107.94 against 94.55 and the Nasdaq volatility index at 28.72 against 24.42. Brent's December contract rose 4.0 percent to 113.17 and December WTI 2.39 percent to 99.47, while gold's December contract fell 2.16 percent.

The measured basis between the December contract's 7,704.50 settle and the 7,663.43 cash close is 41.07 points, against 43.08 on Wednesday, both measured from the same provider daily record. The cash equivalents in this article use this 41.07 point basis, except the source pairs quoted in section 5, which carry the source's 41.52 point offset.

4.6 Institutional Positioning

No weekly positioning report was captured for this session, so no change in speculative length is asserted. Open interest on the December contract is shown at 1,917,749 for Wednesday in the provider's record, and Thursday's open interest had not been reported at the time of capture; Thursday's December volume was 2,182,993 contracts against 1,680,253 on Wednesday, so the decline came on higher volume.

5. SPX Options Flow Context

The desk note used for this section is the 5:22 PM ET edition for Thursday, read at 8:58 PM ET. Its reference prices are the prior session's closes, not Thursday's: SPX 7,757 equals Wednesday's 7,757.17 cash close and NDX 29,822 equals Wednesday's 29,822.52. The note's narrative states a close of 7,663, down 1 percent, consistent with the provider's 7,663.43 close, and every level below is read against that close.

On the index the primary call side ceiling sits at SPX 7,900, the largest gamma concentration at SPX 8,000, the modeled volatility threshold at SPX 7,760, the modeled gamma-flip level at SPX 7,712 and the primary put side support base at SPX 7,650. The close sits 236.57 points beneath the 7,900 ceiling, 96.57 points beneath the threshold, 48.57 points beneath the flip level and 13.43 points above the put side base. Gamma tilt reads 1.141 and gamma notional plus 551.543 million dollars. The note's summary lists resistance at 7,700, 7,720, 7,750 and 7,800, support at 7,650, 7,600 and 7,450 and its desk pivot at 7,690, 26.57 points above the close, and its key strikes are SPX 8,000, 7,000, 7,700 and 7,800.

The note publishes its own December futures pair for each level, carrying the source's 41.52 point offset rather than the measured 41.07 point basis: the ceiling at 7,941.52, the largest concentration at 8,041.52, the modeled volatility threshold at 7,801.52, the modeled gamma-flip level at 7,753.52 and the put side support base at 7,691.52. These are quoted as the source's pairs. The modeled threshold and flip level are model outputs, not option strikes. At the measured basis the desk pivot of SPX 7,690 converts to 7,731.07 and the SPX 7,700 resistance to 7,741.07.

The narrative said a rout in technology shares and rising oil prices sent the market lower, with the Nasdaq down 3 percent, a megacap fund down 3 percent and a semiconductor fund down 7 percent, while the equal-weighted index fund rose 1 percent and the long-bond fund rose 2 percent. The narrative said the social-media company fell 8 percent despite beating revenue expectations as its credit risk reached a record high, that the S&P 500 traded within an 86 basis point range, and that the volatility index and the volatility-of-volatility index both rose 14 percent. The note described index options flow that finished relatively flat with net buying of longer-dated puts, and fixed-strike implied volatility up 1 to 3 vol points across expirations. A same-day put-spread position described with a time of day is excluded, because no intraday series is available to place it.

The note's implied one-day move is 0.60 percent and its implied five-day move 1.15 percent. Its published implied one-day high and low of 7,734.68 and 7,642.42 are centred near 7,688.55, neither the reference nor the close, so that pair is excluded. The note itself says that with the index beneath its desk pivot, short-dated volatility sellers may be forced to sell into declines.

The S&P 500 positioning console, read at about 8:59 PM ET with a page date of 2026-10-22, shows call gamma of minus 4.03 billion against put gamma of minus 3.53 billion, one-month implied volatility of 13.04 percent against realised volatility of 8.90 percent, an implied-volatility rank of 17.18 percent, a skew rank of 77.20 percent and a put-to-call open-interest ratio of 1.47. The console for the S&P 500 exchange-traded fund shows call gamma of minus 3.04 billion against put gamma of minus 3.70 billion, a skew rank of 83.60 percent and a put-to-call open-interest ratio of 2.06. The consoles' live price fields and their high and low volatility point fields are treated as low-confidence and excluded.

In this review's interpretation a cash close beneath both the modeled gamma-flip level and the modeled volatility threshold, and beneath the desk pivot, describes an environment where dealer hedging is less likely to dampen moves. The primary setup sells the 7,740 to 7,748 band beneath the 7,753.52 source pair of the flip level, so the entry sits where the note's 7,700 resistance conversion at 7,741.07 overlaps one standard deviation resistance, and the 7,764 stop clears the flip-level pair.

6. Forecast

6.1 Night Session (6:00 PM ET Thursday to 3:00 AM ET Friday, Globex/Asia)

Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Thursday and quoted the December contract at 7,709.25 at about 6:31 PM ET, 4.75 points above the settle. Japan's consumer prices are listed at 7:30 PM ET and Japan's flash purchasing managers' surveys at 8:30 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Bias neutral to lower beneath the Pivot Point at 7,726.67, expected Globex band roughly 7,665 to 7,745.

6.2 London Session (3:00 AM to 8:00 AM ET Friday)

The euro-area flash purchasing managers' surveys are listed at 4:00 AM ET and the UK flash surveys at 4:30 AM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Bias neutral to lower, expected band roughly 7,655 to 7,760, with Pivot S1 at 7,654.58 the first meaningful support beneath the 7,676.75 low and two standard deviations resistance at 7,761.20 the first meaningful resistance above the band.

6.3 Morning Session (9:30 AM to 12:00 PM ET Friday, RTH Open)

The US flash purchasing managers' surveys are listed at 9:45 AM ET and the final University of Michigan sentiment survey at 10:00 AM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Expected band roughly 7,645 to 7,775, with two standard deviations support at 7,647.80 beneath and three standard deviations resistance at 7,773.95 above.

6.4 Afternoon Session (12:00 PM to 4:00 PM ET Friday)

The captured calendars list no scheduled US release between noon and the 4:00 PM ET cash close. A Friday close carries weekend headline exposure, which in this review's judgment can keep positioning light into the close. Expected band roughly 7,635 to 7,790.

6.5 Night Session Forward (6:00 PM ET Friday)

The market closes for the weekend after Friday's session, and Globex reopens at 6:00 PM ET on Sunday. A rating decision on France is listed as tentative at 4:00 PM ET on Friday, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, and two days of headline exposure separate Friday's close from the Sunday reopen.

6.6 Expected Range (Friday Full Session)

Low-range scenario: 7,665 to 7,745

Mid-range scenario (most likely): 7,645 to 7,775

High-range scenario: 7,605 to 7,800

6.7 Most Likely Path

In this review's analyst judgment the most probable path holds the contract between Pivot S2 at 7,604.67 and Pivot R1 at 7,776.58, with a rebound toward the 7,740 to 7,748 band that fails beneath two standard deviations resistance at 7,761.20 weighted slightly above a recovery. The settle sits beneath the 5-day through 50-day settlement averages, negative direction leads on both directional systems, the composite slipped from 40 percent buy to hold, and the volatility index rose to 19.03.

The alternative that would invalidate this reading is a reversal of Thursday's technology selling, supported by the broad market's resilience, which could carry the contract above Pivot R1 at 7,776.58 toward Thursday's 7,798.75 high. The settle sits above the 100-day and 200-day averages, %K sits above %D, and the Dow industrials closed higher, so a rebound before any extension is a live alternative.

7. Friday Economic Calendar

Thursday's releases are complete. Weekly jobless claims printed at 194,000 at 8:30 AM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed against the calendar, the 5-year inflation-protected Treasury auction drew a high yield of 2.367 percent at 1:00 PM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed against the calendar, and Australia's flash composite purchasing managers' index printed at 6:00 PM ET at 47.7 against 51.3 previously, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed against the calendar.

On Thursday evening Japan's consumer prices are listed at 7:30 PM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. On Friday the French, German, euro-area and UK flash purchasing managers' surveys are listed between 3:15 AM ET and 4:30 AM ET, all per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Canadian retail sales are listed at 8:30 AM ET, the US flash purchasing managers' surveys at 9:45 AM ET, with a composite forecast of 57.4 against 58.4 previously, and the final University of Michigan sentiment survey at 10:00 AM ET, all per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The captured calendars carry no mega-cap earnings entry for Friday.

Later in the window, the FOMC statement is scheduled for 2:00 PM ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it, and the advance estimate of third-quarter GDP and the September personal income and outlays report for 8:30 AM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as the calendar lists them. The calendar contains no Friday, October 23, 2026 entry. In this review's judgment the first-order influence for the S&P 500 on Friday is whether Thursday's technology selling extends, with the 9:45 AM ET US flash purchasing managers' surveys listed by the news-feed calendar, unconfirmed, the main scheduled release.

8. Primary Trade Setup

Direction: Short

Rationale: The settle sits beneath the 5-day through 50-day settlement averages, negative direction leads on the 9-day and 14-day directional systems, the composite slipped to hold, and Thursday's decline settled in the lower quarter of a range 1.49 times the 14-day average daily range. A rebound toward one standard deviation resistance at 7,744.60, into the band around it above the Pivot Point at 7,726.67, offers a short with a defined risk point above two standard deviations resistance at 7,761.20. The broad market's resilience and a settle above the 100-day average leave room for a rebound, so the setup is an analyst judgment that rallies are sold while technology leadership is under pressure, not a measured edge.

Entry Zone: 7,740 to 7,748

Stop Loss: 7,764 (above two standard deviations resistance at 7,761.20 and the 38.2 percent retracement at 7,758.60)

Target 1 (T1): 7,724 (beneath the Pivot Point at 7,726.67)

Target 2 (T2): 7,704 (just beneath Thursday's 7,704.50 settle and above the published target price at 7,703.97)

Target 3 (T3, extended): 7,684 (above Thursday's 7,676.75 low)

Risk-to-Reward: Approximately 1:1 to T1, 1:2 to T2, 1:3 to T3

Invalidation: A settle above two standard deviations resistance at 7,761.20 negates the thesis. Short of that, the edge is removed by acceptance above the entry band rather than by a touch, defined as two consecutive 30-minute closes above 7,748.

Macro override: A broad reversal in technology shares, or a de-escalation in the Gulf that lifts risk appetite, would undercut the short. In that scenario a move through the 7,764 stop invalidates the setup before the targets, and three standard deviations resistance at 7,773.95 and Pivot R1 at 7,776.58 become the references, 9.95 and 12.58 points beyond the stop and inside one 14-day average true range of 82.92 points.

Sources and methodology

This outlook is built from our session review of the December E-mini S&P 500 contract, the December ’26 contract, prepared after Thursday’s close on October 22, 2026 for the Friday, October 23, 2026 session. Thursday’s completed extremes are the inputs behind the published pivot ladder: Pivot R3 at 7,898.58 less Pivot S3 at 7,532.58, divided by three, and Pivot R2 at 7,848.67 less Pivot S2 at 7,604.67, divided by two, both return 122.00, and three times the 7,726.67 Pivot Point less the settle gives a high-plus-low sum of 15,475.51, which the pair of 7,798.75 and 7,676.75 reproduces to the published rounding at 15,475.50. The provider’s settlement row and the chart’s completed Thursday daily bar carry the same open, high, low and settle. Those figures and the review’s own statements are the only evidence used to grade Thursday’s card. No intraday series is available for Thursday, so no order of events within the session is stated. Wednesday’s volume now reads 1,680,253 contracts on the revised 2026-10-21 row, which replaces the preliminary 1,618,838 carried in Thursday’s outlook, and that row’s open interest now reads 1,917,749; that post was not changed. Thursday’s open interest was not yet reported. The chart’s 7,710.25 last, read after the 6:00 PM ET reopen with a change of plus 0.07 percent, is a Friday-session quote; it reproduces the 7,704.50 previous close to the displayed rounding and is not used as Thursday’s settle.

The moving averages were computed from the provider’s 259-session daily settlement series through Thursday, with the partial Friday row excluded; the oscillators are cited as published, read at about 6:31 PM ET after the 6:00 PM ET reopen, so they may include the first minutes of the Friday session. The desk note used is the 5:22 PM ET edition for Thursday, October 22; its reference column carries Wednesday’s closes and its futures column a fixed 41.52 point translation, so cash equivalents here use the 41.07 point basis measured on Thursday, settlement against cash close. The note’s implied one-day high and low pair is not centred on the reference and is excluded, and a same-day put-spread position the note describes with a time of day is excluded because no intraday series is available to place it. The desk note’s gamma notional and the consoles’ call and put gamma are separate model measures from different timestamps; they are shown side by side, each with its source, and never combined. The consoles’ live price and high and low volatility point fields are not used. The open, high and low after the 6:00 PM ET Thursday reopen belong to the Friday session. Scenario ranges are analyst judgment. Items marked unconfirmed come from the news-feed calendar, and every catalyst whose release time had passed at the time of writing is recorded as completed.

Thursday’s outlook for this contract is here, and the Nasdaq-100 contract’s Thursday outlook set the levels for the index that fell 2.90 percent in cash on Thursday. Outlooks for ES, NQ, GC and CL are collected on the market outlook page, and our forward trading record is on the performance statement.
