At 4,081.7, Thursday's high stopped 2.3 points short of the 4,084 to 4,090 short band we set for the session, so the band never traded. December gold settled at 4,031.4, down 20.2 points, or 0.50 percent, from Wednesday's 4,051.6. The low was 4,016.3. The daily bar cannot show which extreme came first.
The dollar eased again. The dollar index slipped to 102.04 from 102.19, and the provider's ten-year yield record fell to 4.99 percent from 5.04 percent. Thursday printed a lower high and a lower low. It settled at 23.1 percent of its range, in the lower quarter. Friday's primary setup is another short, from 4,056 to 4,062, a band that holds one standard deviation resistance at 4,056.1. The settle sits 24.6 points beneath it.
December gold settled at 4,031.4, 11.7 points beneath the 4,043.1 Pivot Point and 38.6 beneath Pivot R1 at 4,070.0. Every settlement average sits above it, from the 5-day at 4,040.8 to the 200-day at 4,596.2. The primary setup for Friday is a short from 4,056 to 4,062, with one standard deviation resistance at 4,056.1 inside the band, stop 4,078 above Pivot R1, and targets 4,040, 4,021 and an extended 4,002. The band sits above the market. Target 1 sits 8.6 points above the settle and Target 2 10.4 beneath it. The composite reads "88% SELL", unchanged from a session earlier. The employment cost index is scheduled for 8:30 AM ET on Friday, as the calendar lists it.
Thursday's 4,081.7 high stopped 2.3 short of the 4,084 to 4,090 short band
In Thursday’s outlook we set a short from 4,084 to 4,090, stop 4,105, with targets at 4,069, 4,051 and an extended 4,033. Its status line put the contract at 4,051.6 at the Wednesday settle. That left 32.4 points to the band. Thursday's bar, from the review and the dated 2026-10-29 row of the provider's daily record, opened at 4,081.4 at the Wednesday 6:00 PM ET reopen, 29.8 above Wednesday's settle and 2.6 beneath the band. It marked a high of 4,081.7 and a low of 4,016.3 and settled at 4,031.4. The band did not trade.
It came close again. The 4,081.7 high sat 2.3 beneath the 4,084 band bottom, 8.3 beneath the 4,090 top and 23.3 beneath the 4,105 stop, so neither the band nor the stop traded. The high sat 0.3 above the open. The settle finished 52.6 beneath the band bottom and 65.8 beneath the invalidation line, a settle above Wednesday's 4,097.2 high. That test was not met. No price traded above 4,090, so the card's acceptance test, two consecutive 30-minute closes above 4,090, was not met either. No fill and no result is asserted.
All three target prices sit inside the bar. The 4,069 first target sat 12.7 beneath the high and 52.7 above the low. The 4,051 second target sat 34.7 above the low, and the extended 4,033 sat 16.7 above it. The settle finished 19.6 beneath the second target and 1.6 beneath the extended one. Those prints carry no result for the card. The band never traded.
Order is the missing piece. No intraday series was kept for Thursday. The daily bar fixes the open, the two extremes and the settle, and nothing more. It cannot show whether the high or the low came first, or whether the target prices traded before or after the high, so we make no claim about the path between them.
The path call held, narrowly. Our Thursday outlook weighted a hold between two standard deviations support at 4,015.8 and Wednesday's 4,097.2 high, with a test of the band that fails weighted slightly above a sustained break higher. The low stayed 0.5 above 4,015.8 and the high 15.5 beneath 4,097.2. The test itself fell short. The high stopped 2.3 beneath the band and 5.2 beneath the 4,086.9 Pivot R1 that sat inside it. The outlook's alternative, a settle above Wednesday's high after the 8:30 AM ET GDP and personal income and outlays reports, did not occur.
The other side came into view. That outlook said a fall through Pivot S1 at 4,026.6 would bring Pivot S2 at 4,001.6 and the 3,989.1 low of 10/23 into play. Thursday's low went 10.3 beneath that Pivot S1 and stopped 14.7 above Pivot S2. The settle finished 4.8 above Pivot S1. The 4,061.9 Pivot Point sat inside the range, and the settle finished 30.5 beneath it.
The range work held at the wider settings. The whole bar sat inside the most likely case of 4,015 to 4,100, by 1.3 at the bottom and 18.3 at the top, and inside the high-range case of 3,975 to 4,128, by 41.3 and 46.3. It slipped out of the low-range case of 4,030 to 4,090 at the bottom only. The low went 13.7 beneath 4,030, and the high sat 8.3 beneath 4,090. The deviation bands split. The low went 10.0 beneath one deviation support at 4,026.3 and the high 4.8 above one deviation resistance at 4,076.9. Two deviations held, with the low 0.5 above 4,015.8 and the high 5.7 beneath 4,087.4. Three deviations, 4,007.7 to 4,095.5, held by 8.6 and 13.8. The average-true-range envelope of 3,975.4 to 4,127.8 held by 40.9 and 46.1. The four session bands cannot be scored. Each depends on when a price printed, and the daily bar does not say.
The macro override named inflation data read as easing pressure on rates, or a sharp fall in the dollar. The dollar index eased 0.15. Per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, the PCE price index rose 3.6 percent from a year earlier, in line with the forecast. The stop never traded. We grade the card as written.
One row anchors the score. The dated 2026-10-29 row of the provider's daily record reads 4,081.4, 4,081.7, 4,016.3 and 4,031.4 on 138,508 contracts. The review states the same prices and volume. Thursday's open interest was not yet reported; the row repeats the figure Wednesday's row carried a night earlier, a stale carry. Wednesday's 2026-10-28 row was revised. It now carries 151,463 contracts against the preliminary 143,669 our Thursday outlook carried, and open interest of 278,582, which that outlook listed as not yet reported. The review cites the same 278,582 for Wednesday.
The 4,056 to 4,062 band, one deviation resistance at 4,056.1 and Pivot R1 at 4,070.0
Resistance starts close. Wednesday's 4,036.9 low sits 5.5 above the settle. Six references follow within 5.5 points. They run from the published target price at 4,037.6 through the 10/26 settle of 4,038.4, the 20 percent raw stochastic projection at 4,039.7, the 5-day average at 4,040.8 and the 14-day %K stall level at 4,042.6 to the Pivot Point at 4,043.1. Wednesday's 4,051.6 settle comes next, 20.2 above Thursday's.
Two references sit in the band. One standard deviation resistance at 4,056.1 sits 0.1 above the 4,056 bottom, inside the band. The 10/22 settle of 4,060.4 sits 4.4 above the bottom and 1.6 beneath the 4,062 top. Just above, the 30 percent raw stochastic projection at 4,065.1 sits 3.1 over the top and two standard deviations resistance at 4,066.3 sits 4.3 over it. The 9-day crossing price at 4,069.6 and Pivot R1 at 4,070.0 sit 0.4 apart. Three standard deviations resistance at 4,074.1 and the 10/27 settle of 4,074.6 follow. The 4,078 stop sits 8.0 above Pivot R1, 3.9 above 4,074.1 and 3.4 above 4,074.6. It sits 1.7 beneath the 9-day average at 4,079.7 and 3.7 beneath Thursday's 4,081.7 high.
Beyond the stop the list runs on. The 9-day average at 4,079.7, Thursday's 4,081.4 open and its 4,081.7 high come first. The 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low at 4,092.2 and Wednesday's 4,097.2 high follow, the high 19.2 beyond the stop. Then come the 4,106.8 average-true-range mark, Pivot R2 at 4,108.5, the 18-day crossing price at 4,121.1, the 50 percent retracement of the four-week range at 4,124.0 and the 20-day average at 4,128.2. Pivot R3 at 4,135.4 and the 10/21 settle of 4,150.0 are next. The rest is distant. It takes in the 10/01 settle of 4,202.3, the 40-day crossing at 4,233.0, the 4,259.0 one-month high from 10/02, the 100-day at 4,268.7 and the 50-day at 4,308.2, 276.8 above the settle. Then the 200-day at 4,596.2.
Support starts at Thursday's low. The 4,016.3 low sits 15.1 beneath the settle. The 10/23 settle of 4,007.9 follows, then a pair. One standard deviation support at 4,006.7 and Pivot S1 at 4,004.6 sit 2.1 apart, 24.7 and 26.8 beneath the settle. A group of four follows within 12.8 points. It runs from two standard deviations support at 3,996.5 through the 3,989.1 low of 10/23 and three standard deviations support at 3,988.7 to the 3-10 day crossover stall level at 3,983.7. That 3,989.1 low is also the one-month, 13-week and 52-week low, 42.3 beneath the settle and 0.4 above 3,988.7. Pivot S2 at 3,977.7 is next, 53.7 beneath the settle. The 3,956.0 average-true-range mark, the 30 percent relative strength projection at 3,941.2 and Pivot S3 at 3,939.2 are the extended references.
Every average sits above the settle. The gaps run 9.4 to the 5-day at 4,040.8, 48.3 to the 9-day at 4,079.7, 96.8 to the 20-day at 4,128.2, 276.8 to the 50-day at 4,308.2, 237.3 to the 100-day at 4,268.7 and 564.8 to the 200-day at 4,596.2. The 5-day fell 5.8 from 4,046.6. The 10/22 settle of 4,060.4 left its window and Thursday's 4,031.4 replaced it. The 20-day fell 8.5 from 4,136.8 as the 10/01 settle of 4,202.3 dropped out, and the 50-day eased 10.3 from 4,318.5. Older settlements explain the order. The 30 older ones in the 50-day window averaged 4,428.3, the 50 older ones in the 100-day window 4,229.1 and the 100 older ones in the 200-day window 4,923.8. Friday's crossing prices are 4,069.6 for the 9-day, 4,121.1 for the 18-day and 4,233.0 for the 40-day. December trades beneath February. The February contract settled at 4,065.1 in the provider's daily record, 33.7 above December, against 34.2 on Wednesday, so the curve stays in contango with the spread little changed.
Momentum sits low on its scales. Relative strength reads 34.38 on the 9-day, 35.88 on the 14-day and 37.96 on the 20-day. The raw stochastics read 19.05 percent on the 9-day and 16.71 percent on the 14-day. The 14-day %K at 25.05 percent sits above %D at 23.75 percent. Sellers still lead on direction. On the 9-day, negative direction at 26.46 leads positive at 12.41 with the ADX at 35.78; on the 14-day, 25.42 leads 12.67 with the ADX at 27.64. Historic volatility reads 13.99 percent on the 9-day and 15.18 percent on the 14-day. These are the provider's published readings, taken at 6:20 PM ET on Thursday after the 6:00 PM ET reopen, so the provider may already blend the reopened session's quote into them.
The composite read published for Friday reads "88% SELL", against "88% SELL" for the prior session. Signal strength shows "Average", direction shows "Strengthening" and the composite trend indicator reads "SELL". The short-horizon group reads "Average: 100% SELL", the medium-horizon "Average: 100% SELL" and the long-horizon "Average: 33% SELL". History: "88% SELL" a week ago and "96% SELL" a month ago.
Thursday's 65.4 point range was 0.98 times the 14-day average daily range of 66.5. The high sat 15.5 beneath Wednesday's 4,097.2 and the low 20.6 beneath Wednesday's 4,036.9. That made a lower high and a lower low. The open sat 29.8 above Wednesday's settle. At 23.1 percent of the range, the settle sat 15.1 above the low and 50.3 beneath the high. That left a body of 50.0 points beneath the open, an upper shadow of 0.3 above it and a lower shadow of 15.1 beneath the settle. It was the second lower settle in a row and the lowest since the 4,007.9 settle of 10/23. Session highs over six sessions ran 4,164.3, 4,050.2, 4,044.0, 4,079.4, 4,097.2 and 4,081.7. Lows ran 4,036.8, 3,989.1, 3,990.9, 4,001.6, 4,036.9 and 4,016.3.
The 14-day average true range stands at 75.4 points, with the 14-day average daily range at 66.5. The 9-day figures are 70.9 and 64.9, and the 20-day 80.2 and 69.7. These were read after the reopen and carry the same caveat as the oscillators. One average true range either side of the settle spans 3,956.0 to 4,106.8. The deviation bands are built from five settlements. They run 4,006.7 to 4,056.1, 3,996.5 to 4,066.3 and 3,988.7 to 4,074.1, and describe settlement dispersion, not intraday reach. In the review's words, with the employment cost index on Friday morning a release can carry the contract outside any of them. Recent ranges vary widely. Daily ranges over ten sessions ran 52.9, 55.6, 44.8, 38.3, 127.5, 61.1, 53.1, 77.8, 60.3 and 65.4 points. Settlements over seven sessions ran 4,150.0, 4,060.4, 4,007.9, 4,038.4, 4,074.6, 4,051.6 and 4,031.4. Changes over ten sessions ran plus 11.0, minus 21.0, minus 17.5, plus 7.4, minus 89.6, minus 52.5, plus 30.5, plus 36.2, minus 23.0 and minus 20.2. Over five sessions the contract is down 29.0 points from the 4,060.4 settle of 10/22. The settle sits 42.3 above the 52-week low.
A softer dollar, a lower yield record and a 0.50 percent decline in gold
The dollar eased again. The dollar index closed at 102.04 in the provider's daily record, down 0.15 from Wednesday's 102.19. The provider's commentary said the dollar was undercut by lower Treasury yields and found support from the stronger GDP report. The yield record fell. The provider's ten-year yield record closed at 4.99 percent against 5.04 percent. Gold fell 0.50 percent while both eased, so on Thursday neither a softer dollar nor lower yields supported the metal. Gold and the dollar index moved in the same direction for a fourth consecutive session; the last session in which they moved in opposite directions was 10/23. No real-yield series was captured, so no real-yield level is asserted.
Data came on schedule. The advance GDP estimate and the personal income and outlays report were released at 8:30 AM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as the calendar lists them. Per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, GDP grew 3.4 percent against a 3.2 percent forecast, the PCE price index rose 3.6 percent from a year earlier and the core index 3.1 percent, both in line with forecasts, and weekly jobless claims were 194 thousand against 198 thousand. The European Central Bank decision followed at 9:15 AM ET. Per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, it held the main rate at 2.65 percent.
Rate pricing drew comment. The provider's commentary reported that markets price a 78 percent chance of a rate increase at the December 8 to 9 FOMC meeting, a figure attributed to that commentary and not verified independently. The news feed carried investment-bank commentary expecting further increases, also attributed and not verified independently.
Iran headlines ran both ways. At 4:55 AM ET the news feed carried a press report of ongoing talks on a temporary peace arrangement with Iran. Later items pointed the other way. At 1:54 PM ET and 1:55 PM ET the news feed carried maritime security reports of a tanker struck in the Strait of Hormuz. At 3:13 PM ET the news feed carried a press report that the top US regional commander briefed the President on military options for Iran. After the close the news feed carried claims by Yemen's Houthis of attacks on three Saudi oil facilities. These are reports carried by the feeds rather than events confirmed for this review.
These items coincided with the session. No intraday series was kept, so none is treated as the cause of gold's decline.
Metals and stocks fell together. Silver's December contract settled at 52.38, down 2.40 percent, so the gold-to-silver ratio rose to 76.96 from 75.50 on Wednesday. The S&P 500 cash index fell 0.30 percent and the Nasdaq-100 cash index 1.38 percent, with the volatility index at 17.20 against 16.91. Oil eased. December WTI settled at 102.00, down 0.76 percent, and Brent's December contract at 114.88, down 0.38 percent. In the review's interpretation gold traded with the broader risk reduction in metals and equities on Thursday.
No structural demand figure was available. No central-bank purchase figure, Chinese central-bank reserve data or exchange-traded fund holdings series was captured, so none is asserted. Chinese official manufacturing data is listed at 9:30 PM ET on Friday, October 30, 2026, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed.
The positioning report is nine days old. Dated October 20, it puts managed-money long positions at 120,970 contracts and managed-money short positions at 16,764, for a net long of 104,206. Commercial long positions stand at 59,531 and commercial short positions at 295,113. The report predates the moves of the last seven sessions, and the next report is due after the Friday close. Open interest on the December contract stands at 278,582 for Wednesday, October 28, in the provider's record, down 2,014 from 280,596 on Tuesday. Thursday's open interest was not yet reported. Thursday's December volume was 138,508 contracts against a revised 151,463 on Wednesday, down 12,955 or 8.6 percent.
The fund console comes next. The gold fund's options console was read at 6:23 PM ET on Thursday, after the settle, with a page date of 2026-10-29; every figure below is that evening read, as of its read time. The fund is a proxy, used qualitatively only and never translated into futures prices; it tracks bullion at a different scale with a fee drag and has no clean basis to the December contract. Strikes come first. The console shows its largest gamma concentration and its call side ceiling both at the 400 strike, its hedge level at 370 and a put side support base at 350. It shows a previous close of 373.51.
Modeled call gamma reads minus 499.65 million against put gamma of minus 497.39 million on the proxy. Aggregate gamma is negative on both sides and close to balanced. Call volume of 587.35 thousand against put volume of 88.47 thousand and a put-to-call open-interest ratio of 0.5 show calls ahead of puts in both the day's volume and open interest, an observation only. Options volume says nothing about direction or demand. Then volatility. One-month implied volatility reads 20.76 percent against realised volatility of 17.19 percent, with an implied-volatility rank of 11.08 percent and a skew rank of 44.80 percent. The options-implied move is 4.89 dollars, about 1.31 percent of the 373.51 previous close.
These are readings taken at 6:23 PM ET on Thursday, after the session's prints. In the review's interpretation, implied volatility at that read sat 3.57 points above realised volatility with a low implied-volatility rank, so at that read time the fund's options market priced only a modest premium. Negative aggregate gamma at the same read is, in the review's interpretation, consistent with hedging that can extend moves. At the read, the console's previous close of 373.51 sat 3.51 above the hedge level at 370. Modeled gamma on a proxy stays a non-directional lens. The console's high and low volatility point fields are excluded, and no fund figure sets a futures level here.
The trade map for Friday
The primary setup is a short. Its band runs 4,056 to 4,062 and holds one standard deviation resistance at 4,056.1, 0.1 above the bottom, with the 10/22 settle of 4,060.4 inside it too. The settle sits beneath every settlement average from the 5-day to the 200-day after a lower high and a lower low, and negative direction leads on the 9-day and 14-day directional systems. The composite reads "88% SELL". The band sits 24.6 to 30.6 points above the settle, beneath two standard deviations resistance at 4,066.3. Risk sits above Pivot R1. The 4,078 stop sits 8.0 above Pivot R1 at 4,070.0 and 3.9 above three standard deviations resistance at 4,074.1. It sits 1.7 beneath the 9-day average and 3.7 beneath Thursday's 4,081.7 high. Targets step down. The first, 4,040, sits 2.4 above the 4,037.6 target price, 0.8 beneath the 5-day average and 8.6 above the settle. Then comes 4,021, 10.4 beneath the settle and 4.7 above Thursday's 4,016.3 low. The extended 4,002 sits 2.6 beneath Pivot S1 at 4,004.6 and 5.5 above two standard deviations support at 3,996.5. The review names the case against the trade. The 52-week low sits 42.3 points beneath the settle, so the review calls the setup an analyst judgment that rebounds into the averages are sold, with no measured edge behind it.
Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026. In the review's account, the provider's overview showed the new session trading just above Thursday's settle when it was read. Asia brings two listings. Tokyo consumer prices are listed at 7:30 PM ET and the Bank of Japan decision at 11:30 PM ET on Thursday, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The review's night bias is lower beneath Pivot R1 at 4,070.0, with an expected band of roughly 4,005 to 4,060. That band's top sits 2.0 beneath the 4,062 band top.
London runs from 3:00 AM to 8:00 AM ET on Friday. German flash GDP is listed at 5:00 AM ET and euro-area flash GDP at 6:00 AM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The review's London band runs roughly 4,000 to 4,065, with a neutral to lower bias beneath Pivot R1. The Pivot Point at 4,043.1 is the pivot of the session, 11.7 above the settle.
Data arrive early. The employment cost index is scheduled for 8:30 AM ET on Friday, as the calendar lists it, and in the review's judgment it is the first-order event for gold on Friday. German consumer prices are listed at 9:00 AM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The morning band runs roughly 3,995 to 4,075. The 4,056 to 4,062 setup band sits near its top, the 4,062 band top 13.0 beneath 4,075.
Speakers follow. Federal Reserve speakers are listed at 12:00 PM ET and 12:30 PM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, and gold settles at 1:30 PM ET. The afternoon band runs roughly 3,985 to 4,080. Its edges sit near the 52-week low at 3,989.1, 4.1 inside the bottom, and Thursday's 4,081.7 high, 1.7 beyond the top.
The weekend stretches the gap. Globex halts at 5:00 PM ET on Friday and does not reopen until 6:00 PM ET on Sunday, November 1, 2026, the day US daylight saving time ends at 2:00 AM ET, as the calendar lists it. In the review's words, two days of headline exposure separate Friday's settle from the next reopen. Chinese official manufacturing data is listed at 9:30 PM ET on Friday, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed.
For the full session the review sets a low-range case of 4,010 to 4,060, a mid-range case, the most likely, of 3,995 to 4,075 and a high-range case of 3,955 to 4,105. That last case sits near the 3,956.0 to 4,106.8 average-true-range envelope. Later, the JOLTS report is scheduled for 10:00 AM ET on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and the employment situation report for 8:30 AM ET on Friday, November 6, 2026, as the calendar lists them.
One path is weighted. In the review's analyst judgment the most probable path holds the contract between the 52-week low at 3,989.1 and Thursday's 4,081.7 high, with a rebound toward one standard deviation resistance at 4,056.1 that fails beneath Pivot R1 at 4,070.0 weighted slightly above a direct break of the 52-week low. No measured frequency backs it. In the review's reading, the 42.3 points between the settle and the 52-week low leave room for a rebound before any test lower. The alternative that would invalidate the reading is a settle above Thursday's 4,081.7 high after the 8:30 AM ET employment cost index. That would open the 4,092.2 retracement and Wednesday's 4,097.2 high. A fall through Pivot S1 at 4,004.6 would instead bring the 52-week low at 3,989.1 and Pivot S2 at 3,977.7 into play without the rebound the setup needs.
Thursday's high stopped 2.3 points under one short band, and its settle finished 24.6 points beneath the next.

1. Executive Summary
The December gold contract settled at 4,031.4 on Thursday, down 20.2 or 0.50 percent from Wednesday's settle of 4,051.6, after trading between 4,081.7 and 4,016.3, a 65.4 point daily range. The settle finished at 23.1 percent of the range, in the lower quarter, and the 65.4 point range was 0.98 multiples of the published 14-day average daily range of 66.5 points. Thursday's high sat 15.5 points beneath Wednesday's 4,097.2 high and Thursday's low sat 20.6 points beneath Wednesday's 4,036.9 low, so the session printed a lower high and a lower low, and the settle was the lowest since the 4,007.9 settle of 10/23.
The decline came on a day when the dollar index eased to 102.04 from 102.19 and the provider's ten-year yield record fell to 4.99 percent; its Wednesday close was 5.04 percent, so on Thursday neither a softer dollar nor lower yields supported the metal. Silver's December contract fell 2.40 percent to 52.38, which lifted the gold-to-silver ratio to 76.96 from 75.50. The 52-week low of 3,989.1, set on 10/23, sits 42.3 points beneath the settle.
The advance GDP estimate released at 8:30 AM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as the calendar lists it, showed growth of 3.4 percent against a 3.2 percent forecast, and the PCE price index rose 3.6 percent from a year earlier, in line with the forecast, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The provider's commentary reported that markets price a 78 percent chance of a rate increase at the December FOMC meeting, a figure attributed to that commentary and not verified independently. Equities fell on the day, and the news feed carried reports in both directions on Iran.
The composite multi-indicator read is "88% SELL", unchanged from the prior session's "88% SELL", with negative direction leading on both directional systems and the settle beneath every settlement average from the 5-day to the 200-day. The published 14-day average true range is 75.4 points. The Primary Setup below is a short from the 4,056 to 4,062 band, which holds one standard deviation resistance at 4,056.1, 0.1 above its bottom, stopped at 4,078 above Pivot R1 at 4,070.0, with objectives at 4,040, 4,021 and an extended 4,002.
2. Price Action & Technical Structure
2.1 Intraday and Session Review
The Thursday session opened at 4,081.4 at the Wednesday 6:00 PM ET reopen, 29.8 points above Wednesday's settle, marked a daily high of 4,081.7 and a daily low of 4,016.3, and settled at 4,031.4 at 1:30 PM ET. This review makes no claim about the order in which the high and the low printed; the daily bar fixes the open, the extremes and the settle, and that is the evidence used here.
The settle sits 15.1 points above the low and 50.3 points beneath the high. The body of the daily bar measures 50.0 points from the 4,081.4 open down to the 4,031.4 settle, with an upper shadow of 0.3 points above the open and a lower shadow of 15.1 points beneath the settle.
Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET, so the open, high and low shown on the provider's overview page, 4,033.6, 4,037.8 and 4,032.3, belong to the new Friday session and not to Thursday's completed session. The provider's previous close of 4,031.4 is Thursday's settle.
Thursday's completed-session extremes are the completed-session inputs behind the published pivot ladder rather than an independently read bar. Pivot R3 at 4,135.4 minus Pivot S3 at 3,939.2, divided by three, returns 65.4, and Pivot R2 at 4,108.5 minus Pivot S2 at 3,977.7, divided by two, returns the same 65.4. Three times the Pivot Point of 4,043.1 less the 4,031.4 settle gives a high plus low sum of 8,097.9, which the pair of 4,081.7 and 4,016.3 reproduces to within the published rounding at 8,098.0, and that pair reproduces all seven published rungs.
Independent corroboration: the provider's settlement row and the chart's completed daily bar for the continuous contract carry the same 4,081.4 open, 4,081.7 high, 4,016.3 low and 4,031.4 settle.
2.2 Daily Structure
Thursday's 4,081.7 high sits 15.5 points beneath Wednesday's 4,097.2, and the 4,016.3 low sits 20.6 points beneath Wednesday's 4,036.9, so the session printed a lower high and a lower low. The 4,031.4 settle was the second consecutive lower settle and the lowest since the 4,007.9 settle of 10/23.
Settlements over the last seven sessions read 4,150.0, 4,060.4, 4,007.9, 4,038.4, 4,074.6, 4,051.6 and 4,031.4. The provider publishes 3,989.1 as the one-month, 13-week and 52-week low, set on 10/23, and 4,259.0 as the one-month high.
The February contract settled at 4,065.1 in the provider's daily record, 33.7 points above December, against 34.2 points on Wednesday, so the forward curve remains in contango with the spread little changed.
2.3 Swing Structure
Daily ranges for the last ten sessions ran 52.9, 55.6, 44.8, 38.3, 127.5, 61.1, 53.1, 77.8, 60.3 and 65.4, and the settlement changes over the same ten sessions read plus 11.0, minus 21.0, minus 17.5, plus 7.4, minus 89.6, minus 52.5, plus 30.5, plus 36.2, minus 23.0 and minus 20.2. Over five sessions the contract is down 29.0 points from the 4,060.4 settle of 10/22.
The retracement grid published for Friday places the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low at 4,092.2 and the 50 percent retracement of the four-week range at 4,124.0. Swing structure here rests on daily bars only.
2.4 Moving Averages
The averages cited in this subsection were computed for this review from the provider's daily settlement series for the December contract, which holds 259 completed sessions through Thursday; the partial Friday row of the reopened Globex session was dropped before counting. The 5-day average stands at 4,040.8, the 9-day at 4,079.7, the 20-day at 4,128.2, the 50-day at 4,308.2, the 100-day at 4,268.7 and the 200-day at 4,596.2.
The 4,031.4 settle sits 9.4 points beneath the 5-day average, 48.3 points beneath the 9-day, 96.8 points beneath the 20-day, 276.8 points beneath the 50-day, 237.3 points beneath the 100-day and 564.8 points beneath the 200-day. The 5-day average fell from Wednesday's 4,046.6, because the 10/22 settle of 4,060.4 left the window and was replaced by 4,031.4. The 20-day fell from 4,136.8 as the 10/01 settle of 4,202.3 left that window, and the 50-day fell from 4,318.5.
The 20-day average sits beneath the 50-day because the 30 older settlements in the 50-day window averaged higher, at 4,428.3. The 50-day sits above the 100-day because the 50 older settlements in the 100-day window averaged lower, at 4,229.1, and the 100-day sits beneath the 200-day because the 100 older settlements in the 200-day window averaged higher, at 4,923.8. The projection grid gives the prices at which each average would be crossed on Friday: 4,069.6 for the 9-day, 4,121.1 for the 18-day and 4,233.0 for the 40-day.
2.5 Oscillator and Trend Readings
The oscillator figures below are as published on the provider's technical page, read at 6:20 PM ET on Thursday after the 6:00 PM ET reopen, so the provider may already be blending the reopened session's quote into them; they are the provider's published readings, not computations made for this review. The 9-day relative strength reads 34.38, the 14-day relative strength 35.88 and the 20-day relative strength 37.96.
The 9-day raw stochastic reads 19.05 percent and the 14-day raw stochastic 16.71 percent, while the 14-day stochastic %K reads 25.05 percent and the 14-day stochastic %D 23.75 percent, so both sit in the lower part of the range.
The 9-day directional index ADX reads 35.78 with the 9-day +DI at 12.41 and the 9-day -DI at 26.46; the 14-day directional index ADX reads 27.64 with the 14-day +DI at 12.67 and the 14-day -DI at 25.42, so negative direction leads on both. The 9-day historic volatility reads 13.99 percent and the 14-day historic volatility 15.18 percent.
The composite multi-indicator read published for the Friday session is "88% SELL", against the prior session's snapshot of "88% SELL", with signal strength described as "Average" and direction as "Strengthening". The snapshot history reads "88% SELL" a week ago and "96% SELL" a month ago. The short-horizon group averages "Average: 100% SELL", the medium-horizon group "Average: 100% SELL" and the long-horizon group "Average: 33% SELL", and the composite trend indicator reads "SELL".
2.6 Volatility and Expected Range
The published 14-day average true range stands at 75.4 points and the 14-day average daily range at 66.5 points; the 9-day average true range is 70.9 with a 9-day average daily range of 64.9, and the 20-day average true range is 80.2 with a 20-day average daily range of 69.7. These were read after the reopen and carry the same caveat as the oscillators. Thursday's 65.4 point range was 0.98 multiples of the 14-day average daily range.
Adding and subtracting the 14-day average true range of 75.4 points from the 4,031.4 settle frames Friday between 3,956.0 and 4,106.8. The published standard-deviation bands are built from five settlements: one deviation spans 4,006.7 to 4,056.1, two spans 3,996.5 to 4,066.3 and three spans 3,988.7 to 4,074.1. These bands describe settlement dispersion, not intraday reach, and with the employment cost index on Friday morning a release can carry the contract outside any of them.
3. Key Levels
3.1 Resistance
Above the 4,031.4 settle, Wednesday's 4,036.9 low sits first, then the published target price at 4,037.6, the 10/26 settle of 4,038.4, 4,039.7, the 20 percent raw stochastic projection, the 5-day average at 4,040.8, 4,042.6, the 14-day %K stochastic stall level, and the Pivot Point at 4,043.1, with Wednesday's 4,051.6 settle above them. One standard deviation resistance at 4,056.1, the 10/22 settle of 4,060.4, then 4,065.1, the 30 percent raw stochastic projection, then two standard deviations resistance at 4,066.3, the 9-day average crossing price at 4,069.6 and Pivot R1 at 4,070.0 form the next band. Three standard deviations resistance at 4,074.1, the 10/27 settle of 4,074.6, the 9-day average at 4,079.7, Thursday's 4,081.4 open and its 4,081.7 high, the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low at 4,092.2, Wednesday's 4,097.2 high, the 4,106.8 average-true-range mark and Pivot R2 at 4,108.5 are the extended references, with the 18-day crossing price at 4,121.1, the 50 percent retracement at 4,124.0, the 20-day average at 4,128.2 and Pivot R3 at 4,135.4 beyond.
3.2 Support
Beneath the settle sits Thursday's 4,016.3 low, then the 10/23 settle of 4,007.9, one standard deviation support at 4,006.7 and Pivot S1 at 4,004.6. Two standard deviations support at 3,996.5, the 52-week low at 3,989.1, three standard deviations support at 3,988.7 and the 3-10 day crossover stall level at 3,983.7 form the next band. Pivot S2 at 3,977.7, then the 3,956.0 average-true-range mark, 3,941.2, the 30 percent relative strength projection, and Pivot S3 at 3,939.2 are the extended references.
4. Macro Drivers
4.1 Dollar and the Ten-Year Yield Record
The dollar index closed at 102.04 in the provider's daily record, down 0.15 from Wednesday's 102.19, and the provider's ten-year yield record closed at 4.99 percent; Wednesday's close was 5.04 percent. The provider's commentary said the dollar was undercut by lower Treasury yields and found support from the stronger GDP report. Gold and the dollar index moved in the same direction for a fourth consecutive session; the last session in which they moved in opposite directions was 10/23. No real-yield series was captured for this review, so no real-yield level is asserted.
4.2 Fed and Monetary Policy
The advance GDP estimate and the personal income and outlays report were released at 8:30 AM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as the calendar lists them. Per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, GDP grew 3.4 percent against a 3.2 percent forecast, the PCE price index rose 3.6 percent from a year earlier and the core index 3.1 percent, both in line with forecasts, and weekly jobless claims were 194 thousand against 198 thousand. The provider's commentary reported that markets price a 78 percent chance of a rate increase at the December 8 to 9 FOMC meeting, and the news feed carried investment-bank commentary expecting further increases; both are attributed and not verified independently.
4.3 Geopolitical Backdrop
The news feed carried at 4:55 AM ET a press report of ongoing talks on a temporary peace arrangement with Iran, at 1:54 PM ET and 1:55 PM ET maritime security reports of a tanker struck in the Strait of Hormuz, and at 3:13 PM ET a press report that the top US regional commander briefed the President on military options for Iran. After the close it carried claims by Yemen's Houthis of attacks on three Saudi oil facilities. These are reports carried by the feeds rather than events confirmed for this review, and none is treated as the cause of gold's decline.
4.4 China and Structural Demand (Central Bank Buying, PBOC, ETF Flows)
No central-bank purchase figure, PBOC reserve data or exchange-traded fund holdings series was captured for this review, so none is asserted. Chinese official manufacturing data is listed at 9:30 PM ET on Friday, October 30, 2026, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed.
4.5 Energy and Cross-Asset
December WTI crude settled at 102.00, down 0.76 percent, and Brent's December contract at 114.88, down 0.38 percent. Silver's December contract settled at 52.38, down 2.40 percent, so the gold-to-silver ratio rose to 76.96 from 75.50 on Wednesday. The S&P 500 cash index fell 0.30 percent and the Nasdaq-100 cash index 1.38 percent, with the volatility index at 17.20; Wednesday's close was 16.91. In this review's interpretation gold traded with the broader risk reduction in metals and equities on Thursday rather than with the softer dollar and lower yields.
4.6 Institutional Positioning (COT, ETF Holdings, Speculator Length)
The weekly positioning report dated October 20, shown on the provider's overview, puts managed-money long positions at 120,970 contracts and managed-money short positions at 16,764, for a net long of 104,206. Commercial long positions stand at 59,531 and commercial short positions at 295,113. The report predates the moves of the last seven sessions, and the next report is due after the Friday close.
Thursday's December volume was 138,508 contracts. The provider's record shows open interest of 278,582 for Wednesday against 280,596 for Tuesday; the open-interest field on Thursday's row repeats the figure the record carried against Wednesday on the prior evening, so it is not used as a Thursday reading.
5. Gold Fund Options Context (Proxy)
The gold fund's options console was read at 6:23 PM ET on Thursday, after the settle, with a page date of 2026-10-29; every figure in this section is that evening read. The fund proxy is used qualitatively only and is never translated into futures prices; the fund tracks bullion at a different scale with a fee drag and has no clean basis to the December contract.
The console shows the largest gamma concentration and the call side ceiling both at the 400 strike, the hedge level at 370 and the put side support base at 350, against a previous close of 373.51 shown on the console. Modeled call gamma reads minus 499.65 million against put gamma of minus 497.39 million, so aggregate gamma is negative on both sides and close to balanced. Call volume of 587.35 thousand against put volume of 88.47 thousand and a put-to-call open-interest ratio of 0.5 show calls ahead of puts in both the day's volume and open interest.
One-month implied volatility reads 20.76 percent against realised volatility of 17.19 percent, the implied-volatility rank 11.08 percent and the skew rank 44.80 percent, with an options-implied move of 4.89 dollars. The console's high and low volatility point fields are excluded.
In this review's interpretation, the snapshot shows implied volatility 3.57 points above realised volatility with a low implied-volatility rank, so the fund's options market priced only a modest premium. Negative aggregate gamma at that read is, in this review's interpretation, consistent with hedging that can extend moves, and at that read the console's previous close sat above the hedge level at 370. Nothing in this section is used to set a futures level; every level in this review originates in published pivot arithmetic, published standard-deviation bands, published retracement and moving-average projections, settlement averages computed from the provider's daily record, or the completed-session extremes described in section 2.1.
6. Forecast
6.1 Night Session (6:00 PM ET Thursday to 3:00 AM ET Friday, Globex/Asia)
Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, and the provider's overview showed the new session trading just above Thursday's settle when it was read. Tokyo consumer prices are listed at 7:30 PM ET and the Bank of Japan decision at 11:30 PM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Bias lower beneath Pivot R1 at 4,070.0, expected band roughly 4,005 to 4,060.
6.2 London Session (3:00 AM to 8:00 AM ET Friday)
German flash GDP is listed at 5:00 AM ET and euro-area flash GDP at 6:00 AM ET on Friday, October 30, 2026, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Bias neutral to lower beneath Pivot R1 at 4,070.0, expected band roughly 4,000 to 4,065, with the Pivot Point at 4,043.1 the pivot of the session.
6.3 Morning Session (9:30 AM to 12:00 PM ET Friday, US Open)
The employment cost index is scheduled for 8:30 AM ET on Friday, October 30, 2026, as the calendar lists it, and German consumer prices are listed at 9:00 AM ET on Friday, October 30, 2026, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Expected band roughly 3,995 to 4,075, with the 4,056 to 4,062 setup band near the top of that range.
6.4 Afternoon Session (12:00 PM to 4:00 PM ET Friday)
Federal Reserve speakers are listed at 12:00 PM ET and 12:30 PM ET on Friday, October 30, 2026, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, and gold settles at 1:30 PM ET. Expected band roughly 3,985 to 4,080, with the outer edges near the 52-week low at 3,989.1 and Thursday's 4,081.7 high.
6.5 Night Session Forward (6:00 PM ET Friday)
Globex halts at 5:00 PM ET on Friday and does not reopen until 6:00 PM ET on Sunday, November 1, 2026, the day US daylight saving time ends at 2:00 AM ET, as the calendar lists it. Two days of headline exposure therefore separate Friday's settle from the next reopen, and Chinese official manufacturing data is listed at 9:30 PM ET on Friday, October 30, 2026, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed.
6.6 Expected Range (Friday Full Session)
Low-range scenario: 4,010 to 4,060
Mid-range scenario (most likely): 3,995 to 4,075
High-range scenario: 3,955 to 4,105
6.7 Most Likely Path
In this review's analyst judgment the most probable path holds the contract between the 52-week low at 3,989.1 and Thursday's 4,081.7 high, with a rebound toward one standard deviation resistance at 4,056.1 that fails beneath Pivot R1 at 4,070.0 weighted slightly above a direct break of the 52-week low. The composite reads "88% SELL" with negative direction leading on both directional systems and the settle beneath every average from the 5-day to the 200-day, while, in this review's judgment, the settle sitting 42.3 points above the 52-week low leaves room for a rebound before any test lower.
The alternative that would invalidate this reading is a settle above Thursday's 4,081.7 high after the 8:30 AM ET employment cost index on Friday, October 30, 2026, as the calendar lists it, which would open the 4,092.2 retracement and Wednesday's 4,097.2 high. On the other side, a fall through Pivot S1 at 4,004.6 would bring the 52-week low at 3,989.1 and Pivot S2 at 3,977.7 into play without the rebound the setup needs.
7. Friday Economic Calendar
Thursday's releases are complete. The advance GDP estimate and the personal income and outlays report were released at 8:30 AM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as the calendar lists them; per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, GDP grew 3.4 percent and the PCE price index rose 3.6 percent from a year earlier. The European Central Bank decision released at 9:15 AM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, held the main rate at 2.65 percent, and gold settled at 1:30 PM ET. Results from two large companies were released after the close on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as the calendar lists them.
On Friday, October 30, 2026 German flash GDP is listed at 5:00 AM ET and euro-area flash GDP at 6:00 AM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The employment cost index is scheduled for 8:30 AM ET on Friday, October 30, 2026, as the calendar lists it, and German consumer prices are listed at 9:00 AM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Federal Reserve speakers are listed at 12:00 PM ET and 12:30 PM ET on Friday, October 30, 2026, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed.
Later in the cycle, US daylight saving time ends at 2:00 AM ET on Sunday, November 1, 2026, as the calendar lists it, the JOLTS report is scheduled for 10:00 AM ET on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, as the calendar lists it, and the employment situation report for 8:30 AM ET on Friday, November 6, 2026, as the calendar lists it. In this review's judgment the first-order event for gold on Friday is the 8:30 AM ET employment cost index.
8. Primary Trade Setup
Direction: Short
Rationale: The composite reads "88% SELL", negative direction leads on the 9-day and 14-day directional systems, and the settle sits beneath every settlement average from the 5-day to the 200-day after a lower high and a lower low. A rebound into the 4,056 to 4,062 band, which holds one standard deviation resistance at 4,056.1, 0.1 above its bottom, and sits beneath two standard deviations resistance at 4,066.3, offers a short with a defined risk point above Pivot R1 at 4,070.0. The 52-week low sits 42.3 points beneath the settle, so the setup is an analyst judgment that rebounds into the averages are sold, not a measured edge.
Entry Zone: 4,056 to 4,062
Stop Loss: 4,078 (above Pivot R1 at 4,070.0 and three standard deviations resistance at 4,074.1)
Target 1 (T1): 4,040 (above the published target price at 4,037.6)
Target 2 (T2): 4,021 (above Thursday's 4,016.3 low)
Target 3 (T3, extended): 4,002 (2.6 beneath Pivot S1 at 4,004.6 and above two standard deviations support at 3,996.5)
Risk-to-Reward: Approximately 1:1 to T1, 1:2 to T2, 1:3 to T3
Invalidation: A settle above Thursday's 4,081.7 high negates the thesis. Short of that, the edge is removed by acceptance above the entry band rather than by a touch, defined as two consecutive 30-minute closes above 4,062.
Macro override: A labour-cost reading taken as easing pressure on rates, or a sharp fall in the dollar, would support gold. In that scenario a move through the 4,078 stop invalidates the short before the targets, and Wednesday's 4,097.2 high becomes the reference, 19.2 points beyond the stop and inside one 14-day average true range of 75.4 points.
Sources and methodology
This outlook is built from our session review of the December gold contract, the December ’26 contract, prepared after Thursday's close on October 29, 2026 for the Friday, October 30, 2026 session. Thursday's completed extremes are the inputs behind the published pivot ladder for Friday: Pivot R3 at 4,135.4 less Pivot S3 at 3,939.2, divided by three, and Pivot R2 at 4,108.5 less Pivot S2 at 3,977.7, divided by two, both return 65.4, and three times the 4,043.1 Pivot Point less the settle gives 8,097.9, which the 4,081.7 high and the 4,016.3 low reproduce to within the published rounding at 8,098.0. The provider's settlement row and the chart's completed Thursday bar carry the same open, extremes and settle. Only those figures, the dated 2026-10-29 row of the provider's daily record and the review's statements are used to grade Thursday's card. No intraday series was kept for Thursday, so no statement here places the high or the low in time. Thursday's session opened at the Wednesday 6:00 PM ET reopen. Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Thursday, so the open, high and low shown on the provider's overview page after the reopen, 4,033.6, 4,037.8 and 4,032.3, belong to the Friday session and are not used as Thursday's range; the provider's previous close of 4,031.4 is Thursday's settle.
Wednesday's 2026-10-28 row has been revised since our Thursday outlook: volume now reads 151,463 contracts against the preliminary 143,669, and open interest 278,582, which that outlook listed as not yet reported; Wednesday's prices are unchanged. Thursday's open interest was not yet reported, because the 2026-10-29 row repeats the figure Wednesday's row carried a night earlier and is treated as a stale carry. The moving averages were computed from the provider's daily settlement series of 259 completed sessions through Thursday, with the partial row of the reopened session dropped, and rounded once to the 0.1 tick; the oscillators and range measures are cited as published, read at 6:20 PM ET on Thursday after the reopen, and the composite strings are quoted verbatim. The gold fund is a proxy used qualitatively; its gamma figures are modeled, its high and low volatility point fields were not used, and no fund level is translated into a futures price. The percent change for the dollar index, the volume and open interest changes and the fund's implied move as a percent are computed from the stated figures. Scenario ranges are analyst judgment, and items marked unconfirmed come from the news-feed calendar or the news feed.
Thursday’s outlook for this contract is here, and the crude oil contract’s Thursday outlook covers the December WTI contract, which settled at 102.00 on Thursday, down 0.76 percent. Outlooks for ES, NQ, GC and CL are collected on the market outlook page, and our forward trading record is on the performance statement.
