Gold Futures 4,051.6: Short 4,084 to 4,090 for Thursday

Market OutlookPublished For the session55 min readby AlgoIndex Research Team
Gold Futures 4,051.6: Short 4,084 to 4,090 for Thursday

December gold fell 23.0 to 4,051.6 and Wednesday's high stopped 2.8 short of the 4,100 to 4,108 band. Levels and a 4,084 to 4,090 short for Thursday.

At 4,097.2, Wednesday's high stopped 2.8 points short of the 4,100 to 4,108 short band we set for the session, so the band never traded. December gold settled at 4,051.6, down 23.0 points, or 0.56 percent, from Tuesday's 4,074.6. The low was 4,036.9. The daily bar cannot show which extreme came first.

The dollar eased too. The dollar index slipped to 102.19 from 102.32, while the provider's ten-year yield record rose to 5.05 percent from 4.99 percent. Wednesday printed a higher high and a higher low but settled at 24.4 percent of its range, in the lower quarter. Thursday's primary setup is another short, from 4,084 to 4,090, a band around Pivot R1 at 4,086.9. The settle sits 32.4 points beneath it.

At a glance

December gold settled at 4,051.6, 10.3 points beneath the 4,061.9 Pivot Point and 35.3 beneath Pivot R1 at 4,086.9. Only the 5-day average, at 4,046.6, sits beneath it; every longer average, from the 9-day at 4,096.3 to the 200-day at 4,599.9, sits above. The primary setup for Thursday is a short from 4,084 to 4,090, with Pivot R1 inside the band, stop 4,105 above Wednesday's 4,097.2 high, and targets 4,069, 4,051 and an extended 4,033. The band sits above the market. Target 1 sits 17.4 points above the settle and Target 2 0.6 beneath it. The composite reads "88% SELL", from "80% SELL" a session earlier. GDP and the personal income and outlays report are scheduled for 8:30 AM ET on Thursday, as the calendar lists them.

Wednesday's 4,097.2 high stopped 2.8 short of the 4,100 to 4,108 short band

In Wednesday’s outlook we set a short from 4,100 to 4,108, stop 4,126, with targets at 4,082, 4,060 and an extended 4,038. Its status line put the contract at 4,074.6 at the Tuesday settle. That left 25.4 points to the band. Wednesday's bar, from the review and the dated 2026-10-28 row of the provider's daily record, opened at 4,073.6 at the Tuesday 6:00 PM ET reopen, 1.0 beneath Tuesday's settle and 26.4 beneath the band. It marked a high of 4,097.2 and a low of 4,036.9 and settled at 4,051.6. The band did not trade.

It came close. The 4,097.2 high sat 2.8 beneath the 4,100 band bottom, 10.8 beneath the 4,108 top and 28.8 beneath the 4,126 stop, so neither the band nor the stop traded. The settle finished 48.4 beneath the band bottom. It sat 78.1 points beneath the invalidation line, a settle above Pivot R2 at 4,129.7. That test was not met. No price traded above 4,108, so the card's acceptance test, two consecutive 30-minute closes above 4,108, was not met either. No fill and no result is asserted.

All three target prices sit inside the bar. The 4,082 first target sat 15.2 beneath the high and 45.1 above the low. The 4,060 second target sat 23.1 above the low, and the extended 4,038 sat 1.1 above it. The settle finished 8.4 beneath the second target and 13.6 above the extended one. Those prints carry no result for the card. The band never traded.

Order is the missing piece. No intraday series was kept for Wednesday. The daily bar fixes the open, the two extremes and the settle, and nothing more. It cannot show whether the high or the low came first, or whether the target prices traded before or after the high, so we make no claim about the path between them.

The path call held its edges. Our Wednesday outlook weighted a hold between one standard deviation support at 4,021.5 and Pivot R2 at 4,129.7, with a test of the band that fails weighted slightly above a sustained break higher. The low stayed 15.4 above 4,021.5 and the high 32.5 beneath 4,129.7. The test itself fell short. The high stopped 2.8 beneath the band and 4.9 beneath the 4,102.1 Pivot R1 that sat inside it. The outlook's alternative, a settle above Pivot R2 after the 2:00 PM ET statement, did not occur.

The range work mostly held. The whole bar sat inside the most likely case of 4,020 to 4,130, by 16.9 at the bottom and 32.8 at the top, and inside the high-range case of 3,997 to 4,152, by 39.9 and 54.8. It slipped out of the low-range case of 4,040 to 4,105 at the bottom only. The low went 3.1 beneath 4,040, and the high sat 7.8 beneath 4,105. One deviation support at 4,021.5 held by 15.4 and one deviation resistance at 4,127.7 by 30.5. The average-true-range envelope of 3,997.2 to 4,152.0 held by 39.7 and 54.8. The four session bands cannot be scored. Each depends on when a price printed, and the daily bar does not say.

The 4,051.9 Pivot Point sat inside the range, and the settle finished 0.3 beneath it. The low stayed 12.6 above Pivot S1 at 4,024.3. The macro override named a statement or press conference read as easing rate-increase expectations, or a sharp fall in the dollar. The provider's commentary described the market's reading of the outcome as slightly dovish. The dollar index eased 0.13. The stop never traded. We grade the card as written.

One row anchors the score. The dated 2026-10-28 row of the provider's daily record reads 4,073.6, 4,097.2, 4,036.9 and 4,051.6 on 143,669 contracts. The review states the same prices and volume. Wednesday's open interest was not yet reported; the row repeats the figure Tuesday's row carried a night earlier, a preliminary carry. Tuesday's 2026-10-27 row was revised. It now carries 139,103 contracts against the preliminary 132,510 our Wednesday outlook carried, and open interest of 280,596, which that outlook listed as not yet reported. The review cites the same 280,596 for Tuesday.

The 4,084 to 4,090 band, Pivot R1 at 4,086.9 and the 4,061.9 Pivot Point

Resistance starts close. The 10/22 settle of 4,060.4 sits 8.8 above the settle. The Pivot Point at 4,061.9 sits just above it, 10.3 above the settle. Then come the 30 percent raw stochastic projection at 4,065.1 and the published target price at 4,067.0. Wednesday's 4,073.6 open, Tuesday's 4,074.6 settle, one standard deviation resistance at 4,076.9 and Tuesday's 4,079.4 high follow.

Three references sit in the band. The 9-day crossing price at 4,085.7 sits 1.7 above the 4,084 bottom. Pivot R1 at 4,086.9 sits 2.9 above the bottom, 0.1 beneath the 4,087 midpoint and 3.1 beneath the 4,090 top. Two standard deviations resistance at 4,087.4 sits 0.4 above the midpoint. Four more crowd the 7.2 points above the band: the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low at 4,092.2, three standard deviations resistance at 4,095.5, the 9-day average at 4,096.3 and Wednesday's 4,097.2 high. The 4,105 stop sits 7.8 above that high and 9.5 above 4,095.5.

Beyond the stop the list thickens. Pivot R2 at 4,122.2 sits 17.2 beyond it. Next come the 50 percent retracement of the four-week range at 4,124.0, the 4,127.8 average-true-range mark, the 18-day crossing price at 4,130.2 and the 20-day average at 4,136.8. Pivot R3 at 4,147.2, the 10/21 settle of 4,150.0, the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week high at 4,155.9 and the 10/22 high of 4,164.3 follow, then the 09/30 settle of 4,186.7. The rest is distant. It takes in the 40-day crossing at 4,246.1, the 4,259.0 one-month high from 10/02, the 100-day at 4,272.7 and the 50-day at 4,318.5, 266.9 above the settle. Then the 200-day at 4,599.9 and the 4,755.0 13-week high from 08/25.

Support starts at the 5-day. The 5-day average at 4,046.6 sits 5.0 beneath the settle. The 20 percent raw stochastic projection at 4,039.7, the 10/26 settle of 4,038.4 and Wednesday's 4,036.9 low follow. Then a pair. Pivot S1 at 4,026.6 and one standard deviation support at 4,026.3 sit 0.3 apart, 25.0 and 25.3 beneath the settle. Two standard deviations support at 4,015.8 comes next. A group of five follows within 6.3 points. It runs from the 10/23 settle of 4,007.9 through three standard deviations support at 4,007.7, the 14-day %K stall level at 4,006.9 and the 3-10 day crossover stall level at 4,005.1 to Pivot S2 at 4,001.6, also Tuesday's low. Monday's 3,990.9 low and Friday's 3,989.1 low sit beneath. Friday's low is also the one-month, 13-week and 52-week low. The 3,975.4 average-true-range mark and Pivot S3 at 3,966.3 are the extended references.

One average sits beneath the settle. The 5-day at 4,046.6 is 5.0 points below it. The gaps above run 44.7 to the 9-day at 4,096.3, 85.2 to the 20-day at 4,136.8, 266.9 to the 50-day at 4,318.5, 221.1 to the 100-day at 4,272.7 and 548.3 to the 200-day at 4,599.9. The 5-day fell 19.7 from 4,066.3. The 10/21 settle of 4,150.0 left its window and Wednesday's 4,051.6 replaced it. The 20-day fell 6.8 from 4,143.5 as the 09/30 settle of 4,186.7 dropped out, and the 50-day eased 7.4 from 4,325.9. Older settlements explain the order. The 30 older ones in the 50-day window averaged 4,439.7, the 50 older ones in the 100-day window 4,226.8 and the 100 older ones in the 200-day window 4,927.1. Thursday's crossing prices are 4,085.7 for the 9-day, 4,130.2 for the 18-day and 4,246.1 for the 40-day. December trades beneath February. The February contract settled at 4,085.8 in the provider's daily record, 34.2 above December, the same carry as on Tuesday.

Momentum sits in the lower part of its scales. Relative strength reads 36.81 on the 9-day, 37.41 on the 14-day and 39.02 on the 20-day. The raw stochastics read 27.02 percent on the 9-day and 24.68 percent on the 14-day. The 14-day %K at 25.97 percent sits above %D at 19.66 percent. Sellers still lead on direction. On the 9-day, negative direction at 25.88 leads positive at 13.83 with the ADX at 35.74; on the 14-day, 25.02 leads 13.51 with the ADX at 27.19. Historic volatility reads 14.50 percent on the 9-day and 16.80 percent on the 14-day. These are the provider's published readings, taken at about 6:24 PM ET on Wednesday after the 6:00 PM ET reopen, so the provider may already blend the reopened session's quote into them.

The composite read published for Thursday reads "88% SELL". "Current Strength" shows "Average", "Current Direction" shows "Average" and the composite indicator reads "SELL". The short-term group reads "Average: 100% SELL", the medium-term "Average: 100% SELL" and the long-term "Average: 33% SELL". History: "80% SELL" yesterday, "48% SELL" last week and "80% SELL" last month.

Wednesday's 60.3 point range was 0.89 times the 14-day average daily range of 67.4. The high sat 17.8 above Tuesday's 4,079.4 and the low 35.3 above Tuesday's 4,001.6. That made a higher high and a higher low, the third higher low in a row. The settle still fell. At 24.4 percent of the range, it sat 14.7 above the low and 45.6 beneath the high. That left a body of 22.0 points beneath the open, an upper shadow of 23.6 above the open and a lower shadow of 14.7 beneath the settle. The 23.0 point decline was the largest since the 52.5 point decline of 10/23. The 4,097.2 high was the highest since the 4,164.3 high of 10/22. Lows over four sessions ran 3,989.1, 3,990.9, 4,001.6 and 4,036.9. Session highs over six sessions ran 4,160.6, 4,164.3, 4,050.2, 4,044.0, 4,079.4 and 4,097.2.

The 14-day average true range stands at 76.2 points, with the 14-day average daily range at 67.4. The 9-day figures are 71.6 and 63.5, and the 20-day 81.0 and 69.1. These were read after the reopen and carry the same caveat as the oscillators. One average true range either side of the settle spans 3,975.4 to 4,127.8. The deviation bands are built from five settlements. They run 4,026.3 to 4,076.9, 4,015.8 to 4,087.4 and 4,007.7 to 4,095.5, and describe settlement dispersion, not intraday reach. In the review's words, the GDP and personal income and outlays reports on Thursday morning can carry the contract outside any of them. Daily ranges over six sessions ran 38.3, 127.5, 61.1, 53.1, 77.8 and 60.3 points. Settlements ran 4,150.0, 4,060.4, 4,007.9, 4,038.4, 4,074.6 and 4,051.6. Changes ran plus 7.4, minus 89.6, minus 52.5, plus 30.5, plus 36.2 and minus 23.0. Over five sessions the contract is down 98.4 points from the 4,150.0 settle of 10/21. The settle sits 62.5 above the 52-week low.

A softer dollar, a higher yield record and a 0.56 percent decline in gold

The dollar eased as well. The dollar index closed at 102.19 in the provider's daily record, down 0.13 from Tuesday's 102.32. The provider's commentary said it traded higher in the morning and fell after the FOMC outcome. The yield record rose. The provider's ten-year yield record closed at 5.05 percent against 4.99 percent. Gold fell 0.56 percent while the dollar eased, so on Wednesday the usual inverse link between the two did not hold for a second session. No real-yield series was captured, so no real-yield level is asserted.

The decision came on schedule. The FOMC statement was released at 2:00 PM ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, and the press conference began at 2:30 PM ET, as the calendar lists them. The news feed carried a 10-2 vote to hold the policy rate, with two members dissenting in favour of a 25 basis point increase. The provider's commentary described the market's reading of the outcome as slightly dovish. It also reported that the Chair announced one of the eight 2027 meetings will be a non-voting strategy meeting.

Before the decision, the news feed carried an investment-bank commentary item putting the overnight-index-swap implied chance of an increase at this meeting close to 10 percent. That figure is attributed to that commentary and not verified independently. After the close, the news feed carried the Treasury Secretary's remarks on yields and oil.

Gulf diplomacy filled the feed. At 3:57 AM ET the news feed carried an item that Qatari mediators had presented Iran with a new draft deal. The news feed then carried two press reports. At 11:59 AM ET one said the Vice President was engaging an Iranian hard-liner to revive talks. At 3:44 PM ET the other said mediators and Iran were discussing a meeting in Turkey before November 4. The provider's commentary on crude cited a press report that the United States had told Gulf countries to prepare for a short military campaign. These are reports carried by the feeds rather than events confirmed for this review.

These items coincided with the session. No intraday series was kept, so none is treated as the cause of gold's decline.

Oil rose. December WTI settled at 102.78, up 2.88 percent, and Brent's December contract at 115.32, up 1.26 percent. Silver's December contract settled at 53.666, down 1.55 percent, so the gold-to-silver ratio rose to 75.50 from 74.75 on Tuesday. Stocks edged up. The S&P 500 cash index rose 0.28 percent and the volatility index closed at 16.91 against 17.52. In the review's interpretation the firmer crude price and the higher ten-year yield record sat alongside the decline, while the softer dollar did not support the metal on the day.

No structural demand figure was available. No central-bank purchase figure, Chinese central-bank reserve data or exchange-traded fund holdings series was captured, so none is asserted.

The positioning report is eight days old. Dated October 20, it puts managed-money long positions at 120,970 contracts and managed-money short positions at 16,764, for a net long of 104,206 against 107,089 a week earlier, a decline of 2,883. Commercial long positions stand at 59,531 and commercial short positions at 295,113. The report predates the moves of the last six sessions. Open interest on the December contract stands at 280,596 for Tuesday, October 27, in the provider's record, down 9,082 from 289,678 on Monday. Wednesday's open interest was not yet reported. Wednesday's December volume was 143,669 contracts against a revised 139,103 on Tuesday, up 4,566 or 3.3 percent.

The fund console comes next. The gold fund's options console was read at about 6:26 PM ET on Wednesday, after the settle, with a page date of 2026-10-28; every figure below is that evening read, as of its read time. The fund is a proxy, used qualitatively only and never translated into futures prices; it tracks bullion at a different scale with a fee drag and has no clean basis to the December contract. Strikes come first. The console shows its largest gamma concentration at the 380 strike, its hedge level at 370, a call side ceiling at 450 and a put side support base at 350. It shows a previous close of 372.28 and a price of 372.72 at the read, up 0.12 percent.

Modeled call gamma reads minus 452.02 million against put gamma of minus 489.93 million on the proxy. Aggregate gamma is negative on both sides and larger on the put side. Call volume of 107.95 thousand against put volume of 59.32 thousand and a put-to-call open-interest ratio of 0.51 show calls ahead of puts in both the day's volume and open interest, an observation only. Options volume says nothing about direction or demand. Then volatility. One-month implied volatility reads 20.05 percent against realised volatility of 17.56 percent, with an implied-volatility rank of 8.19 percent and a skew rank of 46.80 percent. The options-implied move is 4.71 dollars, about 1.27 percent of the 372.28 previous close.

These are readings taken at about 6:26 PM ET on Wednesday, after the session's prints and after the decision. In the review's interpretation, implied volatility at that read sat 2.49 points above realised volatility with a low implied-volatility rank, so at that read time the fund's options market priced only a modest premium. Negative aggregate gamma at the same read is, in the review's interpretation, consistent with hedging that can extend moves. At the read, the fund's price sat between the hedge level at 370 and the largest gamma concentration at 380. Modeled gamma on a proxy stays a non-directional lens. The console's high and low volatility point fields are excluded, and no fund figure sets a futures level here.

The trade map for Thursday

The primary setup is a short. Its band runs 4,084 to 4,090, around Pivot R1 at 4,086.9. Two standard deviations resistance at 4,087.4 and the 9-day crossing price at 4,085.7 sit inside it too. The settle sits beneath every settlement average from the 9-day to the 200-day, and negative direction leads on the 9-day and 14-day directional systems. The composite reads "88% SELL". The band sits 32.4 to 38.4 points above the settle. Risk sits above the high. The 4,105 stop sits 7.8 above Wednesday's 4,097.2 high and 9.5 above three standard deviations resistance at 4,095.5. The 4,092.2 retracement, that deviation level and the 9-day average at 4,096.3 also sit between the band and the stop. Targets step down. The first, 4,069, sits 2.0 above the 4,067.0 target price, 7.1 above the Pivot Point at 4,061.9 and 17.4 above the settle. Then comes 4,051, 0.6 beneath the settle and 4.4 above the 5-day average. The extended 4,033 sits 6.4 above Pivot S1 at 4,026.6 and 3.9 beneath Wednesday's 4,036.9 low. The review flags the evidence against the trade. In its words, three consecutive higher lows show buyers defending the 52-week low. So the review calls the setup an analyst judgment that rallies into the averages are sold, with no measured edge behind it.

Primary setup for Thursday
Direction
Short
Entry Zone
4,084 to 4,090
Stop Loss
4,105, 7.8 points above Wednesday's 4,097.2 high and 9.5 above three standard deviations resistance at 4,095.5
Target 1
4,069, above the published target price at 4,067.0 and the Pivot Point at 4,061.9, 17.4 points above the settle
Target 2
4,051, 0.6 points beneath Wednesday's 4,051.6 settle
Target 3 (extended)
4,033, above Pivot S1 at 4,026.6 and 3.9 points beneath Wednesday's 4,036.9 low
Risk-to-Reward
Approximately 1:1 to T1, 1:2 to T2 and 1:3 to T3, measured from the 4,087 midpoint against the 4,105 stop, a risk of 18 points
Invalidation
A settle above Wednesday's 4,097.2 high negates the thesis. Short of that, the edge is removed by acceptance above the entry band, defined as two consecutive 30-minute closes above 4,090; a touch alone does not remove it
Macro override
Inflation data read as easing pressure on rates, or a sharp fall in the dollar, would support gold. In that scenario a move through the 4,105 stop invalidates the short before the targets, and Pivot R2 at 4,122.2 becomes the reference, 17.2 points beyond the stop and inside one 14-day average true range of 76.2 points
Status at the Wednesday settle
4,051.6, 32.4 points beneath the band; the band sits above the market, and Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Wednesday

Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. In the review's account, the provider's overview showed the new session trading above Wednesday's settle when it was read. Australian import and export prices are listed at 8:30 PM ET on Wednesday, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The review's night bias is neutral beneath Pivot R1 at 4,086.9, with an expected band of roughly 4,045 to 4,090. Pivot R1 sits 3.1 inside that band's top.

London runs from 3:00 AM to 8:00 AM ET on Thursday. UK consumer credit and mortgage approvals are listed at 5:30 AM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The review's London band runs roughly 4,035 to 4,095, with a neutral to lower bias beneath Pivot R1. The Pivot Point at 4,061.9 is the pivot of the session. It sits 10.3 above the settle, with the 10/22 settle of 4,060.4 between them.

Data arrive early. GDP and the personal income and outlays report are scheduled for 8:30 AM ET on Thursday, as the calendar lists them. Weekly jobless claims are listed at 8:30 AM ET and the European Central Bank decision at 9:15 AM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The morning band runs roughly 4,020 to 4,100. The 4,084 to 4,090 setup band sits near its top, the 4,090 band top 10.0 beneath 4,100.

The afternoon has an auction. The seven-year note auction is listed at 1:00 PM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The afternoon band runs roughly 4,010 to 4,105. Its edges sit near two standard deviations support at 4,015.8, 5.8 inside the bottom, and Wednesday's 4,097.2 high, 7.8 inside the top. Results from two large technology companies are due after the close on Thursday, as the calendar lists them for the date only. Globex reopens at 6:00 PM ET on Thursday after the 5:00 PM ET halt. The Bank of Japan decision is listed at 11:30 PM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed.

For the full session the review sets a low-range case of 4,030 to 4,090, a mid-range case, the most likely, of 4,015 to 4,100 and a high-range case of 3,975 to 4,128. That last case tracks the 3,975.4 to 4,127.8 average-true-range envelope. Later, the employment cost index is scheduled for 8:30 AM ET on Friday, October 30, 2026, and the employment situation report for 8:30 AM ET on Friday, November 6, 2026, as the calendar lists them.

One path is weighted. In the review's analyst judgment the most probable path holds the contract between two standard deviations support at 4,015.8 and Wednesday's 4,097.2 high, with a test of the 4,084 to 4,090 band that fails weighted slightly above a sustained break higher. No measured frequency backs it. In the review's reading, three consecutive higher lows argue that the first move can still be up. The alternative that would invalidate the reading is a settle above Wednesday's 4,097.2 high after the 8:30 AM ET GDP and personal income and outlays reports. That would open Pivot R2 at 4,122.2 and the 50 percent retracement at 4,124.0. A fall through Pivot S1 at 4,026.6 would instead bring Pivot S2 at 4,001.6 and Friday's 3,989.1 low into play without the test the setup needs.

Wednesday's high stopped 2.8 points under one short band, and its settle finished 32.4 points beneath the next.

1. Executive Summary

The December gold contract settled at 4,051.6 on Wednesday, down 23.0 or 0.56 percent from Tuesday's settle of 4,074.6, after trading between 4,097.2 and 4,036.9, a 60.3 point daily range. The settle finished at 24.4 percent of the range, in the lower quarter, and the 60.3 point range was 0.89 multiples of the published 14-day average daily range of 67.4 points. Wednesday's high sat 17.8 points above Tuesday's 4,079.4 high and Wednesday's low sat 35.3 points above Tuesday's 4,001.6 low, so the session printed a higher high and a higher low but closed lower. The 23.0 point decline was the largest one-day decline since the 52.5 point decline of 10/23, and the 4,097.2 high was the highest session high since the 4,164.3 high of 10/22.

The decline came alongside a softer dollar. The dollar index closed at 102.19 in the provider's daily record, down 0.13 from Tuesday's 102.32, while the provider's ten-year yield record closed at 5.05 percent against 4.99 percent. December WTI crude rose 2.88 percent to 102.78, and silver's December contract fell 1.55 percent. The provider's commentary described the market's reading of the FOMC outcome as slightly dovish and said the dollar traded higher in the morning before falling after the decision.

The FOMC statement was released at 2:00 PM ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it, and the news feed carried a 10-2 vote to hold the policy rate, with two members dissenting in favour of a 25 basis point increase. The news feed also carried Gulf diplomacy items through the day and, after the close, the Treasury Secretary's remarks on yields and oil. These items coincided with the session; no intraday series was kept for any path claim, so this review does not attribute the move to any one of them. The 52-week low remains Friday's 3,989.1, 62.5 points beneath the settle.

The composite multi-indicator read published for the Thursday session is "88% SELL", against "80% SELL" the prior session, with strength "Average" and direction "Average". The settle sits beneath every settlement average from the 9-day to the 200-day and above only the 5-day. The published 14-day average true range is 76.2 points. The Primary Setup below is a short from the 4,084 to 4,090 band around Pivot R1 at 4,086.9, stopped at 4,105 above Wednesday's 4,097.2 high, with objectives at 4,069, 4,051 and an extended 4,033.

2. Price Action & Technical Structure

2.1 Intraday and Session Review

The Wednesday session opened at 4,073.6 at the Tuesday 6:00 PM ET reopen, 1.0 point beneath Tuesday's settle, marked a daily high of 4,097.2 and a daily low of 4,036.9, and settled at 4,051.6. This review makes no claim about the order in which the high and the low printed; the daily bar fixes the open, the extremes and the settle, and that is the evidence used here.

The settle sits 14.7 points above the low and 45.6 points beneath the high, so the session closed in the lower quarter of its range. The body of the daily bar measures 22.0 points from the 4,073.6 open to the 4,051.6 settle, with an upper shadow of 23.6 points above the open and a lower shadow of 14.7 points beneath the settle.

Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET, so the open, high and low shown on the provider's overview page, 4,081.4, 4,081.6 and 4,075.5, belong to the new Thursday session and not to Wednesday's completed session. The provider's previous close of 4,051.6 is Wednesday's settle.

Wednesday's completed-session extremes are the completed-session inputs behind the published pivot ladder rather than an independently read bar. Pivot R3 at 4,147.2 minus Pivot S3 at 3,966.3, divided by three, returns 60.3, and Pivot R2 at 4,122.2 minus Pivot S2 at 4,001.6, divided by two, returns the same 60.3. Three times the Pivot Point of 4,061.9 less the 4,051.6 settle gives a high plus low sum of 8,134.1, which the pair of 4,097.2 and 4,036.9 reproduces exactly, and that pair reproduces all seven published rungs.

Independent corroboration: the provider's settlement row and the chart's completed daily bar for the continuous contract carry the same 4,073.6 open, 4,097.2 high, 4,036.9 low and 4,051.6 settle.

2.2 Daily Structure

Wednesday's 4,097.2 high sits 17.8 points above Tuesday's 4,079.4, and the 4,036.9 low sits 35.3 points above Tuesday's 4,001.6, so the session printed a higher high and a higher low, its third consecutive higher low, while the settle fell 23.0 points. The lows over the last four sessions read 3,989.1, 3,990.9, 4,001.6 and 4,036.9.

Settlements over the last six sessions read 4,150.0, 4,060.4, 4,007.9, 4,038.4, 4,074.6 and 4,051.6 from 10/21, so Wednesday ended a run of two higher settles that followed the declines of 10/22 and 10/23. The provider's published 52-week, 13-week and one-month low is Friday's 3,989.1, the one-month high is 4,259.0 and the 13-week high is 4,755.0.

The February contract settled at 4,085.8 in the provider's daily record, 34.2 points above December, the same carry as on Tuesday.

2.3 4-Hour and Swing Structure

Daily ranges for the last six sessions ran 38.3, 127.5, 61.1, 53.1, 77.8 and 60.3 from 10/21, and the settlement changes over the same six sessions read plus 7.4, minus 89.6, minus 52.5, plus 30.5, plus 36.2 and minus 23.0. The five-day change is minus 98.4 points from the 4,150.0 settle of 10/21.

The retracement grid published for Thursday places the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low at 4,092.2, 40.6 points above the settle, the 50 percent retracement of the four-week range at 4,124.0 and the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week high at 4,155.9. No four-hour series was captured for this review, so swing structure here rests on daily bars only.

2.4 Moving Averages

The averages cited in this subsection were computed for this review from the provider's daily settlement series for the December contract, which holds 259 completed sessions through Wednesday; the partial Thursday row of the reopened Globex session was dropped before counting. The 5-day average stands at 4,046.6, the 9-day at 4,096.3, the 20-day at 4,136.8, the 50-day at 4,318.5, the 100-day at 4,272.7 and the 200-day at 4,599.9.

The 4,051.6 settle sits 5.0 points above the 5-day average and 44.7 points beneath the 9-day, 85.2 points beneath the 20-day, 266.9 points beneath the 50-day, 221.1 points beneath the 100-day and 548.3 points beneath the 200-day. The 5-day average fell 19.7 points from Tuesday's 4,066.3, because the 10/21 settle of 4,150.0 left the window and was replaced by 4,051.6. The 20-day fell 6.8 points from 4,143.5, because the 09/30 settle of 4,186.7 left that window, and the 50-day fell 7.4 points from 4,325.9.

The 20-day average sits beneath the 50-day because the 30 older settlements in the 50-day window averaged higher, at 4,439.7. The 50-day sits above the 100-day because the 50 older settlements in the 100-day window averaged lower, at 4,226.8, and the 100-day sits beneath the 200-day because the 100 older settlements in the 200-day window averaged higher, at 4,927.1. The projection grid gives the prices at which each average would be crossed on Thursday: 4,085.7 for the 9-day, 4,130.2 for the 18-day and 4,246.1 for the 40-day.

2.5 Oscillator and Trend Readings

The oscillator figures below are as published on the provider's technical page, read at about 6:24 PM ET on Wednesday after the 6:00 PM ET reopen, so the provider may already be blending the reopened session's quote into them; they are the provider's published readings, not computations made for this review. The 9-day relative strength reads 36.81, the 14-day relative strength 37.41 and the 20-day relative strength 39.02.

The 9-day raw stochastic reads 27.02 percent and the 14-day raw stochastic 24.68 percent, while the 14-day stochastic %K reads 25.97 percent and the 14-day stochastic %D 19.66 percent, so %K sits above %D in the lower part of the range.

The 9-day directional index ADX reads 35.74 with the 9-day +DI at 13.83 and the 9-day -DI at 25.88; the 14-day directional index ADX reads 27.19 with the 14-day +DI at 13.51 and the 14-day -DI at 25.02, so negative direction leads on both. The 9-day historic volatility reads 14.50 percent and the 14-day historic volatility 16.80 percent.

The composite multi-indicator snapshot captured for this review reads, verbatim: Overall Average "88% SELL", Current Strength "Average", Current Direction "Average", Composite Indicator "SELL". The short-term group reads "Average: 100% SELL", the medium-term group "Average: 100% SELL" and the long-term group "Average: 33% SELL". The snapshot history reads Yesterday "80% SELL", Last Week "48% SELL" and Last Month "80% SELL".

2.6 Volatility and Expected Range

The published 14-day average true range stands at 76.2 points and the 14-day average daily range at 67.4 points; the 9-day average true range is 71.6 with a 9-day average daily range of 63.5, and the 20-day average true range is 81.0 with a 20-day average daily range of 69.1. These were read after the reopen and carry the same caveat as the oscillators. Wednesday's 60.3 point range was 0.89 multiples of the 14-day average daily range.

Adding and subtracting the 14-day average true range of 76.2 points from the 4,051.6 settle frames Thursday between 3,975.4 and 4,127.8. The published standard-deviation bands are built from five settlements: one deviation spans 4,026.3 to 4,076.9, two spans 4,015.8 to 4,087.4 and three spans 4,007.7 to 4,095.5. These bands describe settlement dispersion, not intraday reach, and the GDP and personal income and outlays reports on Thursday morning can carry the contract outside any of them.

3. Key Levels

3.1 Resistance

Above the 4,051.6 settle, the 10/22 settle of 4,060.4 sits first, then the Pivot Point at 4,061.9, then 4,065.1 from the 30 percent raw stochastic projection, and the published target price at 4,067.0, followed by Wednesday's 4,073.6 open, Tuesday's 4,074.6 settle, one standard deviation resistance at 4,076.9 and Tuesday's 4,079.4 high. The 9-day average crossing price at 4,085.7, Pivot R1 at 4,086.9 and two standard deviations resistance at 4,087.4 form the next band, with the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low at 4,092.2, three standard deviations resistance at 4,095.5, the 9-day average at 4,096.3 and Wednesday's 4,097.2 high above. Pivot R2 at 4,122.2, the 50 percent retracement at 4,124.0, the 18-day average crossing price at 4,130.2 and Pivot R3 at 4,147.2 are the extended references.

3.2 Support

Beneath the settle sits the 5-day average at 4,046.6, then 4,039.7 from the 20 percent raw stochastic projection, the 10/26 settle of 4,038.4 and Wednesday's 4,036.9 low, then Pivot S1 at 4,026.6 and one standard deviation support at 4,026.3. Two standard deviations support at 4,015.8, three standard deviations support at 4,007.7, then 4,006.9 from the 14-day %K stochastic stall level, and the 3-10 day crossover stall level at 4,005.1 form the next band, with Pivot S2 at 4,001.6 beneath. Friday's 3,989.1 low, which is also the published 52-week, 13-week and one-month low, and Pivot S3 at 3,966.3 are the extended references.

4. Macro Drivers

4.1 Dollar and the Ten-Year Yield Record

The dollar index closed at 102.19 in the provider's daily record, down 0.13 from Tuesday's 102.32, and the provider's commentary said it traded higher in the morning and fell after the FOMC outcome. The provider's ten-year yield record closed at 5.05 percent against 4.99 percent. Gold fell 0.56 percent while the dollar eased, so on Wednesday the usual inverse link between the two did not hold for a second session. No real-yield series was captured for this review, so no real-yield level is asserted.

4.2 Fed and Monetary Policy

The FOMC statement was released at 2:00 PM ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it, and the press conference began at 2:30 PM ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it. The news feed carried a 10-2 vote to hold, with two members dissenting in favour of a 25 basis point increase. The provider's commentary described the market reading of the outcome as slightly dovish and reported that the Chair announced one of the eight 2027 meetings will be a non-voting strategy meeting. Before the decision the news feed carried an investment-bank commentary item putting the overnight-index-swap implied chance of an increase at this meeting close to 10 percent, a figure attributed to that commentary and not verified independently.

4.3 Geopolitical Backdrop

The news feed carried at 3:57 AM ET an item that Qatari mediators had presented Iran with a new draft deal, at 11:59 AM ET a press report that the Vice President was engaging an Iranian hard-liner to revive talks, and at 3:44 PM ET a press report that mediators and Iran were discussing a meeting in Turkey before November 4. The provider's commentary on crude cited a press report that the United States had told Gulf countries to prepare for a short military campaign. These are reports carried by the feeds rather than events confirmed for this review, and none is treated as the cause of gold's decline.

4.4 China and Structural Demand (Central Bank Buying, PBOC, ETF Flows)

No central-bank purchase figure, PBOC reserve data or exchange-traded fund holdings series was captured for this review, so none is asserted. The gold fund's options console, used qualitatively in section 5, showed the fund up 0.12 percent at the 6:26 PM ET read.

4.5 Energy and Cross-Asset

December WTI crude settled at 102.78, up 2.88 percent, and Brent's December contract at 115.32, up 1.26 percent. Silver's December contract settled at 53.666, down 1.55 percent, so the gold-to-silver ratio rose to 75.50 from 74.75 on Tuesday. The S&P 500 cash index rose 0.28 percent and the volatility index closed at 16.91 against 17.52. In this review's interpretation the firmer crude price and the higher ten-year yield record sat alongside the decline, while the softer dollar did not support the metal on the day.

4.6 Institutional Positioning (COT, ETF Holdings, Speculator Length)

The weekly positioning report dated October 20, shown on the provider's overview, puts managed-money long positions at 120,970 contracts and managed-money short positions at 16,764, for a net long of 104,206 against 107,089 a week earlier. Commercial long positions stand at 59,531 and commercial short positions at 295,113. The report predates the moves of the last six sessions.

Open interest on the December contract reads 280,596 for Tuesday, October 27, in the provider's record, and Wednesday's open interest was not yet reported, so no reading of the change in open interest on Wednesday is offered. Wednesday's December volume was 143,669 contracts.

5. Gold Fund Options Context (Proxy)

The gold fund's options console was read at about 6:26 PM ET on Wednesday, after the settle, with a page date of 2026-10-28; every figure in this section is that evening read. The fund proxy is used qualitatively only and is never translated into futures prices; the fund tracks bullion at a different scale with a fee drag and has no clean basis to the December contract.

The console shows the largest gamma concentration at the 380 strike, the hedge level at 370, the call side ceiling at 450 and the put side support base at 350, against a previous close of 372.28 shown on the console and a price of 372.72 at the read. Modeled call gamma reads minus 452.02 million against put gamma of minus 489.93 million, so aggregate gamma is negative on both sides and larger on the put side. Call volume of 107.95 thousand against put volume of 59.32 thousand and a put-to-call open-interest ratio of 0.51 show calls ahead of puts in both the day's volume and open interest.

One-month implied volatility reads 20.05 percent against realised volatility of 17.56 percent, the implied-volatility rank 8.19 percent and the skew rank 46.80 percent, with an options-implied move of 4.71 dollars. The console's high and low volatility point fields are excluded.

In this review's interpretation, the 6:26 PM ET snapshot shows implied volatility 2.49 points above realised volatility with a low implied-volatility rank, so at that read time the fund's options market priced only a modest premium after the decision. Negative aggregate gamma at the same read is, in this review's interpretation, consistent with hedging that can extend moves, and the fund's price at the read sits between the hedge level at 370 and the largest gamma concentration at 380. Nothing in this section is used to set a futures level; every level in this review originates in published pivot arithmetic, published standard-deviation bands, published retracement and moving-average projections, settlement averages computed from the provider's daily record, or the completed-session extremes described in section 2.1.

Australian import and export prices are listed at 8:30 PM ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Bias neutral beneath Pivot R1 at 4,086.9, expected band roughly 4,045 to 4,090.

6.2 London Session (3:00 AM to 8:00 AM ET Thursday)

UK consumer credit and mortgage approvals are listed at 5:30 AM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Bias neutral to lower beneath Pivot R1 at 4,086.9, expected band roughly 4,035 to 4,095, with the Pivot Point at 4,061.9 the pivot of the session.

6.3 Morning Session (9:30 AM to 12:00 PM ET Thursday, US Open)

GDP and the personal income and outlays report are scheduled for 8:30 AM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as the calendar lists it, and the European Central Bank decision is listed at 9:15 AM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Expected band roughly 4,020 to 4,100, with the 4,084 to 4,090 setup band near the top of that range.

6.4 Afternoon Session (12:00 PM to 4:00 PM ET Thursday)

The seven-year note auction is listed at 1:00 PM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Expected band roughly 4,010 to 4,105, with the outer edges near two standard deviations support at 4,015.8 and Wednesday's 4,097.2 high.

6.5 Night Session Forward (6:00 PM ET Thursday)

Globex reopens at 6:00 PM ET on Thursday after the 5:00 PM ET halt. The Bank of Japan decision is listed at 11:30 PM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, and the employment cost index is scheduled for 8:30 AM ET on Friday, October 30, 2026, as the calendar lists it.

6.6 Expected Range (Thursday Full Session)

Low-range scenario: 4,030 to 4,090

Mid-range scenario (most likely): 4,015 to 4,100

High-range scenario: 3,975 to 4,128

6.7 Most Likely Path

In this review's analyst judgment the most probable path holds the contract between two standard deviations support at 4,015.8 and Wednesday's 4,097.2 high, with a test of the 4,084 to 4,090 band around Pivot R1 that fails weighted slightly above a sustained break higher. The composite reads "88% SELL" with negative direction leading on both directional systems and the settle beneath every average from the 9-day to the 200-day, while three consecutive higher lows argue that the first move can still be up.

The alternative that would invalidate this reading is a settle above Wednesday's 4,097.2 high after the 8:30 AM ET GDP and personal income and outlays reports on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as the calendar lists it, which would open Pivot R2 at 4,122.2 and the 50 percent retracement at 4,124.0. On the other side, a fall through Pivot S1 at 4,026.6 would bring Pivot S2 at 4,001.6 and Friday's 3,989.1 low into play without the test the setup needs.

7. Thursday Economic Calendar

Wednesday's releases are complete. The FOMC statement was released at 2:00 PM ET and the press conference began at 2:30 PM ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, both as the calendar lists them; the news feed carried a 10-2 vote to hold. The weekly petroleum status report was released at 10:30 AM ET on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as the calendar lists it.

On Thursday, October 29, 2026 UK consumer credit is listed at 5:30 AM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. GDP and the personal income and outlays report are scheduled for 8:30 AM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as the calendar lists it, with weekly jobless claims listed at 8:30 AM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The European Central Bank decision is listed at 9:15 AM ET and the seven-year note auction at 1:00 PM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Results from two large technology companies are due after the close on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as the calendar lists them for the date only, and the Bank of Japan decision is listed at 11:30 PM ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed.

Later in the cycle, the employment cost index is scheduled for 8:30 AM ET on Friday, October 30, 2026, as the calendar lists it, and the employment situation report for 8:30 AM ET on Friday, November 6, 2026, as the calendar lists it. In this review's judgment the first-order event for gold on Thursday is the 8:30 AM ET GDP and personal income and outlays release, with the European Central Bank decision the second.

8. Primary Trade Setup

Direction: Short

Rationale: The composite reads "88% SELL", negative direction leads on the 9-day and 14-day directional systems, and the settle sits beneath every settlement average from the 9-day to the 200-day after a session that closed in the lower quarter of its range. A rise into the 4,084 to 4,090 band, at Pivot R1 of 4,086.9, two standard deviations resistance at 4,087.4 and the 9-day average crossing price at 4,085.7, offers a short with a defined risk point above Wednesday's 4,097.2 high. Three consecutive higher lows show buyers defending the 52-week low, so the setup is an analyst judgment that rallies into the averages are sold, not a measured edge.

Entry Zone: 4,084 to 4,090

Stop Loss: 4,105 (7.8 points above Wednesday's 4,097.2 high and three standard deviations resistance at 4,095.5)

Target 1 (T1): 4,069 (above the published target price at 4,067.0 and the Pivot Point at 4,061.9)

Target 2 (T2): 4,051 (beneath Wednesday's 4,051.6 settle)

Target 3 (T3, extended): 4,033 (above Pivot S1 at 4,026.6 and 3.9 beneath Wednesday's 4,036.9 low)

Risk-to-Reward: Approximately 1:1 to T1, 1:2 to T2, 1:3 to T3

Invalidation: A settle above Wednesday's 4,097.2 high negates the thesis. Short of that, the edge is removed by acceptance above the entry band rather than by a touch, defined as two consecutive 30-minute closes above 4,090.

Macro override: Inflation data read as easing pressure on rates, or a sharp fall in the dollar, would support gold. In that scenario a move through the 4,105 stop invalidates the short before the targets, and Pivot R2 at 4,122.2 becomes the reference, 17.2 points beyond the stop and inside one 14-day average true range of 76.2 points.

Sources and methodology

This outlook is built from our session review of the December gold contract, the December ’26 contract, prepared after Wednesday's close on October 28, 2026 for the Thursday, October 29, 2026 session. Wednesday's completed extremes are the inputs behind the published pivot ladder for Thursday: Pivot R3 at 4,147.2 less Pivot S3 at 3,966.3, divided by three, and Pivot R2 at 4,122.2 less Pivot S2 at 4,001.6, divided by two, both return 60.3, and three times the 4,061.9 Pivot Point less the settle gives 8,134.1, which the 4,097.2 high and the 4,036.9 low reproduce exactly. The provider's settlement row and the chart's completed Wednesday bar carry the same open, extremes and settle. Only those figures, the dated 2026-10-28 row of the provider's daily record and the review's statements are used to grade Wednesday's card. No intraday series was kept for Wednesday, so no statement here places the high or the low in time. Wednesday's session opened at the Tuesday 6:00 PM ET reopen. Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Wednesday, so the open, high and low shown on the provider's overview page after the reopen, 4,081.4, 4,081.6 and 4,075.5, belong to the Thursday session and are not used as Wednesday's range; the provider's previous close of 4,051.6 is Wednesday's settle.

Tuesday's 2026-10-27 row has been revised since our Wednesday outlook: volume now reads 139,103 contracts against the preliminary 132,510, and open interest 280,596, which that outlook listed as not yet reported; Tuesday's prices are unchanged. Wednesday's open interest was not yet reported, because the 2026-10-28 row repeats the figure Tuesday's row carried a night earlier and is treated as a preliminary carry. The moving averages were computed from the provider's daily settlement series of 259 completed sessions through Wednesday, with the partial row of the reopened session dropped, and rounded once to the 0.1 tick; the oscillators and range measures are cited as published, read at about 6:24 PM ET on Wednesday after the reopen, and the composite strings are quoted verbatim. The gold fund is a proxy used qualitatively; its gamma figures are modeled, its high and low volatility point fields were not used, and no fund level is translated into a futures price. The percent change for the dollar index, the managed-money net change, the volume and open interest changes and the fund's implied move as a percent are computed from the stated figures. Scenario ranges are analyst judgment, and items marked unconfirmed come from the news-feed calendar or the news feed.

Wednesday’s outlook for this contract is here, and the crude oil contract’s Wednesday outlook covers the December WTI contract, which settled at 102.78 on Wednesday, up 2.88 percent. Outlooks for ES, NQ, GC and CL are collected on the market outlook page, and our forward trading record is on the performance statement.
