At 9:30 AM ET on Thursday the cash session opened, and the 30-minute bar that followed carried the December Nasdaq-100 contract down to 29,622.50. That was its lowest print since the 29,247.75 low of 09/17. The bar closed at 29,687.50. Nothing traded lower all day.
The climb took the rest of the session. The 10:30 AM ET bar closed at 29,971.25, the 11:00 AM ET bar reached 30,061.75, and the 3:30 PM ET bar marked the session high of 30,196.75. The contract settled at 30,143.75, down 39.00 points, or 0.13 percent, from Wednesday's 30,182.75. It was still a lower high and a lower low. That made four lower settles in a row, and the lowest settle since the 29,917.25 of 09/18. The settle finished at 90.8 percent of a 574.25 point range, 521.25 points off the low. It sat far nearer the high.
December Nasdaq-100 futures settled at 30,143.75, down 39.00 points, after a lower high, a lower low and a 521.25 point recovery from the 29,622.50 low. The settle sits beneath the 5-day through 50-day settlement averages, 46.66 points under the 50-day, and above the 100-day. The primary setup is a short from 30,330 to 30,390, a band around Pivot R1 at 30,352.83 and the 50 percent retracement at 30,334.75, stop 30,600 above one standard deviation resistance at 30,580.67, targets 30,120, 29,880 and an extended 29,640. It needs a rally to engage. The whole band sits 186.25 to 246.25 points above the settle. Import prices print at 8:30 AM ET Friday and industrial production at 9:15 AM ET, as the calendar lists them.
Thursday's 30,196.75 high stopped 183.25 points under the short band
In Thursday’s outlook we set a short from 30,380 to 30,440, stop 30,580. Its targets sat at 30,240, 30,070 and an extended 29,900. Thursday's bar, from the review, opened at 30,154.75 at the Wednesday 6:00 PM ET reopen, marked a high of 30,196.75 and a low of 29,622.50, and settled at 30,143.75. The band never traded. The high stopped 183.25 points beneath its 30,380 bottom and 243.25 beneath its 30,440 top. The stop sat 383.25 points above the high.
The 30-minute record places both extremes. The low printed in the 9:30 AM ET bar. The high printed in the 3:30 PM ET bar, which traded from 30,120.00 to 30,196.75 and closed at 30,140.50. Price spent the whole session beneath the card's first target. The first bar opened at 30,154.75, already under 30,240, and dipped to 30,028.00, beneath the 30,070 second target. The 7:30 PM ET bar on Wednesday evening was the first to trade beneath 29,900, and the low finished 277.50 points under that extended target. Without an entry in the band, those prints score nothing. No fill and no result is asserted.
The card's other lines stayed out of play. Its invalidation was a settle above one standard deviation resistance at 30,541.32, and the settle finished 397.57 points beneath it. Its acceptance test needed two consecutive 30-minute closes above 30,440. The highest close all session was 30,140.50. The outlook weighted a rally that fails beneath 30,541.32 above a sustained recovery, and the high stopped 344.57 points beneath that line. Its alternative, a move back above the 30,494.93 flip equivalent, never came. Its most probable path, an analyst judgment, held the contract between two standard deviations support at 29,675.65 and two standard deviations resistance at 30,689.85, and the low broke the lower line by 53.15 points.
Our ranges broke on the downside. The low-range case of 29,824 to 30,541 and the most likely case of 29,676 to 30,690 gave way, by 201.50 and 53.50 points, while the high-range case of 29,562 to 30,804 held with 60.50 points to spare. The high stayed inside all three. The 29,850 to 30,400 Globex band broke in the 11:00 PM ET bar, and the overnight bars reached down to 29,764.75. London's 29,800 to 30,450 band broke in the 3:00 AM ET bar, and the London bars reached down to 29,748.50. The morning band of 29,700 to 30,550 broke in the 9:30 AM ET bar. The afternoon bars held 29,909.25 to 30,196.75, inside the 29,650 to 30,650 band.
Pivot R1 at 30,352.83, the 30,330 to 30,390 band and the 30,308.16 flip equivalent
The basis narrowed to 208.16 points, the 30,143.75 settle less the 29,935.59 cash close, from 231.93 on Wednesday. Every December equivalent of a positioning level in this article uses it: 30,538.16 for the 30,330 modeled volatility threshold, 30,308.16 for the 30,100 modeled gamma-flip level, 29,708.16 for the 29,500 put-side base and 29,683.16 for the 29,475 gamma concentration. The conversions are the review's own. The desk note does not make them.
Resistance starts close. Thursday's 30,154.75 open sits 11.00 points above the settle and Wednesday's 30,182.75 settle 39.00 above it. The 50-day average at 30,190.41 sits 46.66 points above the settle, with Thursday's 30,196.75 high and the 40-day crossing price at 30,228.46 just behind. The 30,308.16 flip equivalent comes next. Then the band. The 50 percent retracement of the four-week range at 30,334.75 sits 4.75 points above its 30,330 bottom, and Pivot R1 at 30,352.83 sits 22.83 above it and 37.17 beneath the 30,390 top. The 9-18 day crossover price at 30,459.00, the 30,538.16 threshold equivalent, Pivot R2 at 30,561.92 and one standard deviation resistance at 30,580.67 form the next grouping. Then the stop. It sits at 30,600, 19.33 points above that deviation line. Beyond it come the 5-day average at 30,625.00, the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week high at 30,637.24, two standard deviations resistance at 30,761.64 and the 20-day average at 30,807.48. The 18-day and 9-day crossing prices at 30,848.18 and 30,872.50, Wednesday's 30,891.50 high, three standard deviations resistance at 30,900.51, Tuesday's 30,906.00 high and the 9-day average at 30,921.97 sit higher still. Pivot R3 at 30,927.08 is the extended reference, with the 31,616.50 52-week high above it.
Support starts 65.75 points down, at Wednesday's 30,078.00 low, with the 100-day average at 30,064.67 just beneath it. The two 38.2 percent retracements, from the 13-week high at 30,037.12 and from the four-week low at 30,032.26, sit 4.86 points apart, and the Pivot Point at 29,987.67 follows. The published target price at 29,802.78, Pivot S1 at 29,778.58, the 29,708.16 put-base equivalent, one standard deviation support at 29,706.83 and the 29,683.16 concentration equivalent form the next band. Thursday's 29,622.50 low sits under them. A second grouping lies deeper. It starts with the 3-10 day crossover stall level at 29,569.68, the 50 percent retracement of the 13-week range at 29,549.25 and two standard deviations support at 29,525.86. Pivot S2 at 29,413.42, three standard deviations support at 29,386.99, Pivot S3 at 29,204.33 and the 29,053.00 one-month low lie beyond, with the 200-day average at 28,282.30 and the 27,482.00 13-week low far below.
Every short average sits overhead. The settle is 481.25 points beneath the 5-day, 778.22 beneath the 9-day, 663.73 beneath the 20-day and 46.66 beneath the 50-day. It is 79.08 above the 100-day and 1,861.45 above the 200-day. The 5-day fell 165.15 points from 30,790.15 as the 10/08 settle of 30,969.50 left the window. The 20-day rose 20.04 from 30,787.44 as the 09/17 settle of 29,743.00 dropped out, and the 50-day rose 4.58 from 30,185.83. Older settlements sit lower. The 30 older ones in the 50-day window averaged 29,779.03, and the 50 older ones in the 100-day window 29,938.94. Friday's crossing prices are 30,872.50 for the 9-day, 30,848.18 for the 18-day and 30,228.46 for the 40-day.
Momentum stayed soft. Relative strength reads 35.12 on the 9-day, 43.19 on the 14-day and 47.20 on the 20-day. Both raw stochastics read 26.14 percent, and the 14-day %K at 22.49 percent sits beneath %D at 32.11 percent. Sellers lead by a wide margin. On the 9-day, negative direction at 37.83 tops positive at 12.81 by 25.02, with the ADX at 26.49; on the 14-day, 31.55 tops 16.47 by 15.08, with the ADX at 18.18. Historic volatility reads 13.45 percent and 13.03 percent. These readings are as published for the Friday session after the 6:00 PM ET reopen, so the page may carry the live Globex price.
The composite multi-indicator read held at 8 percent sell, unchanged from the prior session, strength weak and direction weakening. A week ago it read 80 percent buy. A month ago, 64 percent sell. The short-horizon group averages 40 percent sell, the medium 25 percent sell and the long 67 percent buy, and the trend indicator reads hold.
The bar's shape tells the story. Its upper shadow measures 53.00 points; the open sat 11.00 above the settle, which leaves a lower shadow of 521.25. The 14-day average true range stands at 477.95 points, 1.59 percent of the settle, and the 14-day average daily range at 477.82; the 9-day figures are 487.06 and 470.42 and the 20-day figures 480.88 and 480.95. One average true range either side of the settle spans 29,665.80 to 30,621.70. The deviation bands, built from five settlements, run 29,706.83 to 30,580.67, 29,525.86 to 30,761.64 and 29,386.99 to 30,900.51, and describe settlement dispersion only. Eight sessions of daily ranges read 307.25, 378.00, 674.00, 313.50, 445.00, 314.75, 813.50 and 574.25 points. Last week spanned 31,616.50 to 30,792.00. This week through Thursday has spanned 31,289.25 to 29,622.50, and the settle sits 965.00 points beneath last Friday's 31,108.75. Over five sessions the contract fell 825.75 points from the 30,969.50 settle of 10/08. The 52-week high sits 1,472.75 above the settle and the 29,053.00 one-month low 1,090.75 beneath it. No prior-quarter extremes were captured, so the 13-week high of 31,616.50 and low of 27,482.00 stand in.
Hot producer prices, falling yields and import prices next
Producer prices ran hot. The September producer price index printed at 8:30 AM ET, as the calendar lists it, with the news feed showing 1.3 percent for the month against a 0.6 percent forecast and 6.3 percent for the year against 5.4 percent, and core producer prices at 0.7 percent against 0.3 percent. Retail sales rose 0.8 percent against 0.3 percent, per the news feed. The 8:30 AM ET bar opened at 29,835.25, traded down to 29,711.00 and closed at 29,790.00, and the 9:00 AM ET bar closed at 29,744.75. The record sets the print and the bars side by side. It assigns no cause.
Yields went the other way. The ten-year yield index traded between 5.04 and 5.11 percent and closed at 5.09 percent against 5.19 percent on Wednesday, and the thirty-year index closed at 5.42 percent against 5.52 percent. A feed headline at 12:00 PM ET said the data failed to revive rate-increase bets. Earlier, at 4:16 AM ET, the feed carried investment-bank commentary expecting a third Federal Reserve increase in March 2027. No inflation-protected yield series was captured, so real yields are not measured here. The dollar index closed at 102.00, down 0.55.
Artificial-intelligence headlines framed the session. The feed's Europe and Asia wraps described a deepening selloff in artificial-intelligence shares overnight, with the Europe wrap citing a 1.1 percent decline in Nasdaq-100 futures at that stage after disclosures from an artificial-intelligence model developer. At 11:10 AM ET the feed carried the leading graphics-chip maker's chief executive saying a cloud computing provider does not require financial backing from the chip maker and that the provider's cost of capital is declining. The feed's US market wrap described stocks recovering as investors reassessed concerns about the sustainability of the artificial-intelligence boom. That account is the wrap's. No causal link to the contract is asserted here.
Other company items on the feed included a large software maker completing pre-training of a new model at 12:15 PM ET, a social-media group releasing open model weights at 1:00 PM ET and a search-engine group publishing a quantum computing result at 2:06 PM ET. After the close, at 4:57 PM ET, the feed carried sources saying some investors dialed back valuation expectations for the model developer after disappointing results and the market selloff. These are statements carried by the news feed rather than measured flows.
Chips lagged. The semiconductor index closed at 11,581.22, down 0.88 percent. It had opened at 11,280.89 and traded as low as 11,171.53, so it closed 409.69 points above its low. The Taiwanese chipmaker reported at 2:00 AM ET, as the calendar lists it, and the feed's 4:18 AM ET Europe sentiment item cited its earnings as a positive. A government item followed. At 10:51 AM ET the feed carried a press report that the German government will collaborate with the leading graphics-chip maker on artificial intelligence. A market sentiment gauge was carried on the feed at 23 out of 100 at 10:17 AM ET, described as extreme fear.
Security headlines ran too. The news feed carried at 1:14 PM ET a US statement that a civilian vessel was hit by a projectile from Iran's revolutionary guard and that a civilian container vessel sank while being towed to shore, and at 4:43 PM ET and 4:44 PM ET Pentagon statements on a rebalancing of the NATO alliance. These are statements carried by the news feed rather than confirmed events, and no causal link to the index is asserted. November WTI crude settled at 97.97, up 3.03 percent, and gold rose 1.51 percent.
The Nasdaq-100 lagged. Its cash index closed at 29,935.59, down 0.05 percent, while the S&P 500 cash index rose 0.33 percent to 7,744.06, the Dow industrials 1.08 percent to 52,177.69 and the NYSE composite 0.84 percent to 24,066.65. The volatility index closed at 16.46 against 16.87. The Nasdaq-100 volatility index rose to 22.89 from 22.70, and the volatility-of-volatility index eased to 92.57 from 94.45.
The cash close sits beneath both model lines. The 5:28 PM ET Thursday desk note carries Wednesday's closes in its reference column: NDX 29,950 equals Wednesday's 29,950.82 cash close, and QQQ 728 sits 0.95 beneath the fund's 728.95 Wednesday close. The note runs a day behind. Against Thursday's 29,935.59 close, the index sits 394.41 points beneath the 30,330 modeled volatility threshold, 164.41 beneath the 30,100 modeled gamma-flip level and 460.59 above the 29,475 largest gamma concentration, with the primary put-side base at 29,500. Both model lines sit overhead. The index model's gamma tilt reads 0.897 and its gamma notional minus 4.604 million dollars, so index gamma is negative in aggregate. One field gets less weight. The note's call-side field for the index reads 29,475, beneath its own 29,500 put-side field, so it is treated as low-confidence. The note lists 29,475, 30,000, 29,500 and 31,000 as key index strikes.
On the QQQ proxy the call-side ceiling sits at 760, the largest concentration at 740, the flip level at 738, the threshold at 734 and the put-side base at 725. The fund's gamma tilt reads 0.637 and its gamma notional minus 1.036 billion dollars. Its console, read at about 9:06 PM ET and marked as updated 2026-10-15, shows call gamma of minus 747.88 million against put gamma of minus 1.72 billion, one-month implied volatility of 20.16 percent against realised volatility of 17.00 percent, an implied-volatility rank of 35.82 percent and a put-to-call open-interest ratio of 1.41. Three fields are dropped. Its current-price field is a post-close indicative quote, and its high and low volatility point fields read inverted at 740 and 510, so all three are excluded. In the review's interpretation, drawn from the index model and the QQQ fund proxy, a cash close beneath the flip level with negative gamma on both the index and the fund describes positioning that is less likely to dampen moves. That is a damping read. It carries no direction. The flip level and threshold are model outputs.
The desk note's narrative went further. It said Nasdaq index options flow showed about minus 9 billion dollars of cumulative delta, driven mainly by call selling, while implied-volatility compression helped the index reclaim its largest gamma concentration at 29,475. It said single-stock options traders sold puts and bought calls in artificial-intelligence names ahead of earnings, and that semiconductors lagged as the equal-weighted S&P 500 fund rose 1.4 percent. Friday is monthly options expiration, per the positioning note, unconfirmed.
Activity rose. Volume reached 803,966 contracts against Wednesday's 749,259, a figure revised from the 731,907 carried in Thursday's outlook. Open interest read 281,712 on Wednesday's 2026-10-14 row, up from 278,674 on the 2026-10-13 row, and Thursday's figure is not yet reported. No weekly positioning report was captured.
The trade map for Friday
The primary setup is a short from 30,330 to 30,390. Thursday printed a lower high and a lower low for a fourth consecutive lower settle, and the settle sits beneath the 5-day through 50-day averages. Negative direction leads on both windows. The composite reads 8 percent sell with direction described as weakening. The band sits around Pivot R1 at 30,352.83 and the 50 percent retracement at 30,334.75, with its bottom 21.84 points above the 30,308.16 flip equivalent. That line marks where the review's damping read changes. It casts no vote on direction. All of the band sits above the settle. A fill there means price has climbed at least 186.25 points off the settle, so the thesis is that a rally into Pivot R1 stalls beneath Pivot R2. The targets sit at 30,120, 23.75 beneath Thursday's settle, 29,880, 107.67 beneath the Pivot Point, and an extended 29,640, 17.50 above Thursday's low. Caveats remain. The settle finished at 90.8 percent of the range after a 521.25 point recovery from the low, so the review calls the setup an analyst judgment that the recovery stalls beneath Pivot R2, with no measured edge behind it.
Now the arithmetic. From the 30,360 midpoint the risk to the stop is 240 points, 50.2 percent of the 14-day average true range of 477.95. The targets sit 240, 480 and 720 points beneath the midpoint. Exact multiples. The first target, 30,120, sits 23.75 points beneath the settle, and the 6:34 PM ET quote of 30,117.50 already sat 2.50 points under it. The settle sits 186.25 points beneath the band bottom and 246.25 beneath its top, and that quote widens the first gap to 212.50.
The scenario ranges are analyst judgment. The low-range case runs 29,850 to 30,350, the most likely 29,700 to 30,580 and the high-range case 29,660 to 30,620. Then the sessions. Session by session the review expects roughly 29,850 to 30,350 through Globex absent a headline shock, with a neutral to lower bias beneath Pivot R1 at 30,352.83. London follows at 29,780 to 30,400, with the 30,330 to 30,390 band the first meaningful resistance and the Pivot Point at 29,987.67 the first meaningful support. The morning band runs 29,700 to 30,580. Its top sits 0.67 points beneath one standard deviation resistance at 30,580.67 and its bottom 6.83 points beneath one standard deviation support at 29,706.83. The afternoon band runs 29,620 to 30,640. At writing the Friday session had opened at 30,089.00 and traded from 30,088.00 to 30,128.00, and it was quoted at 30,117.50 at 6:34 PM ET, 26.25 points beneath the settle. The 4:30 PM ET bar had closed at 30,078.25; that post-settlement quote is not used as the settlement anywhere here.
Friday's calendar starts Thursday evening. A Federal Reserve bank president spoke at 4:30 PM ET Thursday, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed, and the news feed carried a regional Federal Reserve president's remarks at 4:46 PM ET and 4:48 PM ET. Two central bankers are listed next. The Bank of England governor is listed at 10:00 PM ET and a European Central Bank board member at 10:30 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The Federal Reserve Chair's discussion with the International Monetary Fund's managing director is set for 11:30 PM ET, as the calendar lists it. Two more come before dawn. The Bank of Canada governor is listed at 12:15 AM ET Friday and final euro-area consumer prices at 5:00 AM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Then the data. Import prices for September print at 8:30 AM ET and industrial production at 9:15 AM ET, as the calendar lists them, before the 9:30 AM ET cash open. The cash session closes at 4:00 PM ET, and a Friday close carries two days of headline exposure into the Sunday reopen at 6:00 PM ET on October 18, with Pivot R1 at 30,352.83 above and Pivot S1 at 29,778.58 beneath as the weekend gap references. Friday is monthly options expiration, per the positioning note, unconfirmed. Later, a streaming company reports at 4:01 PM ET on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, as the calendar lists it, and the next policy statement is listed for 2:00 PM ET on October 28, 2026, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed.
One path is weighted. In the review's analyst judgment the most probable path holds the contract between one standard deviation support at 29,706.83 and one standard deviation resistance at 30,580.67, with artificial-intelligence headlines and long-end yields deciding the side. In that judgment a rally toward Pivot R1 at 30,352.83 that stalls beneath one standard deviation resistance is weighted above a sustained break higher. No measured frequency backs it. The alternative is a continuation of Thursday's afternoon recovery through Pivot R2 at 30,561.92 and one standard deviation resistance, which would put the 5-day settlement average at 30,625.00 in play. The 521.25 point recovery from the low is the evidence against the short reading. In the review's judgment import prices at 8:30 AM ET are the first-order scheduled input on Friday, with the Federal Reserve Chair's overnight discussion at 11:30 PM ET and unscheduled artificial-intelligence headlines the larger swing factors.
Thursday's low came in the 9:30 AM ET bar and its high in the 3:30 PM ET bar; Friday's short band begins 186.25 points above the settle.

1. Executive Summary
The December Nasdaq-100 contract settled at 30,143.75 on Thursday, down 39.00 or 0.13 percent from Wednesday's settle of 30,182.75, after trading between 30,196.75 and 29,622.50, a 574.25 point daily range. The settle finished at 90.8 percent of the range, and the 574.25 point range was 1.20 times the published 14-day average daily range of 477.82 points. Thursday printed a lower high and a lower low against Wednesday, and the settle was the fourth consecutive lower settle, but the contract recovered 521.25 points from its low into the settle.
The 30,143.75 settle was the lowest since the 29,917.25 settle of 09/18, and the 29,622.50 low the lowest since the 29,247.75 low of 09/17. In the 30-minute series the session low printed in the 9:30 AM ET bar and the session high in the 3:30 PM ET bar, so the contract made its low at the cash open and its high late in the afternoon.
Producer prices for September printed at 8:30 AM ET, as the calendar lists them, with the news feed showing 1.3 percent for the month against a 0.6 percent forecast and 6.3 percent for the year against 5.4 percent, while retail sales rose 0.8 percent against 0.3 percent. The 8:30 AM ET bar traded down to 29,711.00 and closed at 29,790.00. Feed headlines described a deepening selloff in artificial-intelligence and chip shares overnight, and at 11:10 AM ET the leading graphics-chip maker's chief executive said a cloud computing provider needs no financial backstop; the feed's US market wrap described stocks recovering as the chip maker backed the cloud provider.
The Nasdaq-100 cash index closed at 29,935.59, down 0.05 percent, the semiconductor index at 11,581.22, down 0.88 percent after a 11,171.53 low, and the ten-year yield index at 5.09 percent against 5.19 percent. The measured closing basis was 208.16 points, the December settlement less the cash close. The Friday session carries import prices at 8:30 AM ET and industrial production at 9:15 AM ET, both as the calendar lists them.
The published 14-day average true range of 477.95 points is 1.59 percent of the settle. The desk note places the Nasdaq-100 cash close 164.41 points beneath the modeled gamma-flip level at NDX 30,100 and 394.41 points beneath the modeled volatility threshold at NDX 30,330, with gamma negative on both the index model and the QQQ fund proxy (section 5; model outputs, read as a damping lens with no direction). The Primary Setup below is a short from the 30,330 to 30,390 band around Pivot R1 at 30,352.83, stopped at 30,600 above one standard deviation resistance at 30,580.67, with objectives at 30,120, 29,880 and an extended 29,640.
2. Price Action & Technical Structure
2.1 Intraday and Session Review
The Thursday session opened at 30,154.75 at the Wednesday 6:00 PM ET reopen, 28.00 below Wednesday's settle, marked a daily high of 30,196.75 and a daily low of 29,622.50, and settled at 30,143.75. The 30-minute series for the session places the session low of 29,622.50 in the 9:30 AM ET bar and the session high of 30,196.75 in the 3:30 PM ET bar.
Overnight, the 11:00 PM ET bar on Wednesday traded down to 29,825.50 and the 7:30 AM ET bar closed at 29,816.50. The 8:30 AM ET bar, which contains the producer price and retail sales releases, opened at 29,835.25, traded down to 29,711.00 and closed at 29,790.00, and the 9:00 AM ET bar closed at 29,744.75. The 9:30 AM ET bar traded between 29,622.50 and 29,859.50 and closed at 29,687.50.
The recovery then built through the session: the 10:30 AM ET bar closed at 29,971.25, the 11:00 AM ET bar reached 30,061.75, the 3:00 PM ET bar closed at 30,135.75, and the 3:30 PM ET bar marked the session high of 30,196.75 and closed at 30,140.50. After the settle, the chart's 4:30 PM ET bar closed at 30,078.25; that post-settlement quote is not used as the settlement anywhere in this review.
Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET, so the provider's displayed day open, high and low of 30,089.00, 30,128.00 and 30,088.00 belong to the new session dated Friday, not to Thursday, and are not used as Thursday's range.
The session extremes used here are the completed-session inputs behind the published pivot ladder and were not read independently from a bar, back-solved from the outer pivot pairs and verified against every rung. Pivot R3 at 30,927.08 minus Pivot S3 at 29,204.33, divided by three, returns 574.25, and Pivot R2 at 30,561.92 minus Pivot S2 at 29,413.42, divided by two, returns the same 574.25. Three times the Pivot Point of 29,987.67 less the 30,143.75 settle gives a high plus low sum of 59,819.26, which the pair of 30,196.75 and 29,622.50 reproduces at 59,819.25, within the published two-decimal rounding, and that pair reproduces all seven published rungs.
Independent corroboration: the provider's settlement row, the chart's completed Thursday daily bar and the extremes of the 30-minute series carry the same 30,196.75 high and 29,622.50 low.
2.2 Daily Structure
Thursday printed a lower high and a lower low against Wednesday: the 30,196.75 high sits 694.75 beneath Wednesday's 30,891.50, and the 29,622.50 low sits 455.50 beneath Wednesday's 30,078.00. The settle at 90.8 percent of the range leaves an upper shadow of 53.00 above the settle, and the 30,154.75 open sits 11.00 above the settle, so the daily bar carries a long lower shadow of 521.25 beneath the settle.
The sequence of session highs over the last six sessions reads 31,466.00, 31,266.50, 31,289.25, 30,906.00, 30,891.50 and 30,196.75, and the sequence of session lows reads 30,792.00, 30,953.00, 30,844.25, 30,591.25, 30,078.00 and 29,622.50. Settlements over the same six sessions ran 30,969.50, 31,108.75, 30,898.25, 30,791.50, 30,182.75 and 30,143.75.
Last week, October 5 through October 9, spanned 31,616.50 to 30,792.00, and this week through Thursday has spanned 31,289.25 to 29,622.50, with the contract 965.00 beneath last Friday's 31,108.75 settle. The 52-week, 13-week and one-month high of 31,616.50 sits 1,472.75 above the settle, and the one-month low of 29,053.00 sits 1,090.75 beneath it. Over five sessions the contract fell 825.75 points from the 30,969.50 settle of 10/08, matching the provider's five-day change of minus 825.75.
No prior-quarter high or low was captured, so the 13-week extremes serve as the available quarterly reference: 31,616.50 above and 27,482.00 beneath.
2.3 4-Hour and Swing Structure
Daily ranges for the last eight sessions ran 307.25, 378.00, 674.00, 313.50, 445.00, 314.75, 813.50 and 574.25. The settlement changes over the same eight sessions read plus 165.50, minus 81.00, minus 432.75, plus 139.25, minus 210.50, minus 106.75, minus 608.75 and minus 39.00.
The retracement grid published for Friday places the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low at 30,032.26 and the 38.2 percent retracement from the 13-week high at 30,037.12, both beneath the settle, with the 50 percent retracement of the four-week range at 30,334.75 and the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week high at 30,637.24 above it. No four-hour series was captured, so swing structure here rests on daily bars and the preserved 30-minute session.
2.4 Moving Averages
The averages cited in this subsection were computed from the provider's daily settlement series for the December contract, which holds 259 completed sessions through Thursday. The 5-day average stands at 30,625.00, the 9-day at 30,921.97, the 20-day at 30,807.48, the 50-day at 30,190.41, the 100-day at 30,064.67 and the 200-day at 28,282.30.
The 30,143.75 settle sits 481.25 points beneath the 5-day average, 778.22 beneath the 9-day, 663.73 beneath the 20-day and 46.66 beneath the 50-day, and 79.08 above the 100-day and 1,861.45 above the 200-day. The 5-day average fell 165.15 from Wednesday's 30,790.15, because the 10/08 settle of 30,969.50 left the window and was replaced by 30,143.75. The 20-day rose 20.04 from 30,787.44, because the 09/17 settle of 29,743.00 left that window, and the 50-day rose 4.58 from 30,185.83.
The 20-day average sits above the 50-day because the last 20 settlements averaged 30,807.48 against 30,190.41 for the full 50, which means the 30 older settlements in the 50-day window averaged lower, at 29,779.03. The 50-day sits above the 100-day because the 50 older settlements in the 100-day window averaged lower, at 29,938.94. The projection grid gives the prices at which each average would be crossed on Friday: 30,872.50 for the 9-day, 30,848.18 for the 18-day and 30,228.46 for the 40-day.
2.5 Oscillator and Trend Readings
The oscillator figures below are as published on the provider's technical page dated for the Friday session and read after the 6:00 PM ET reopen; the page can substitute the live Globex price for the settle, so these readings carry that caveat. The 9-day relative strength reads 35.12, the 14-day relative strength 43.19 and the 20-day relative strength 47.20.
The 9-day raw stochastic and the 14-day raw stochastic both read 26.14 percent, while the 14-day stochastic %K reads 22.49 percent and the 14-day stochastic %D 32.11 percent, so %K sits beneath %D in the lower part of the range.
The 9-day directional index ADX reads 26.49 with the 9-day +DI at 12.81 and the 9-day -DI at 37.83; the 14-day directional index ADX reads 18.18 with the 14-day +DI at 16.47 and the 14-day -DI at 31.55, so negative direction leads on both. The 9-day historic volatility reads 13.45 percent and the 14-day historic volatility 13.03 percent.
The composite multi-indicator read published for the Friday session is 8 percent sell, unchanged from 8 percent sell in the prior session's snapshot, with signal strength described as weak and direction as weakening. The snapshot history reads 80 percent buy a week ago and 64 percent sell a month ago. The short-horizon group averages 40 percent sell, the medium-horizon group 25 percent sell and the long-horizon group 67 percent buy, and the composite trend indicator reads hold.
2.6 Volatility and Expected Range
The published 14-day average true range stands at 477.95 points and the 14-day average daily range at 477.82 points; the 9-day average true range is 487.06 with a 9-day average daily range of 470.42, and the 20-day average true range is 480.88 with a 20-day average daily range of 480.95. Thursday's 574.25 point range was 1.20 times the 14-day average daily range.
Adding and subtracting the 14-day average true range of 477.95 points from the 30,143.75 settle frames Friday between 29,665.80 and 30,621.70. The published standard-deviation bands are built from five settlements: one deviation spans 29,706.83 to 30,580.67, two spans 29,525.86 to 30,761.64 and three spans 29,386.99 to 30,900.51. These bands describe settlement dispersion, not intraday reach.
3. Key Levels
3.1 Resistance
Above the 30,143.75 settle, Thursday's 30,196.75 high and the 40-day average crossing price at 30,228.46 form the first band. The 50 percent retracement of the four-week range at 30,334.75 and Pivot R1 at 30,352.83 form the band that anchors the setup, followed by the 9-18 day crossover price at 30,459.00, Pivot R2 at 30,561.92 and one standard deviation resistance at 30,580.67. The 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week high at 30,637.24, the 5-day settlement average at 30,625.00 and two standard deviations resistance at 30,761.64 come next, with the 20-day settlement average at 30,807.48, the 18-day and 9-day average crossing prices at 30,848.18 and 30,872.50 and Pivot R3 at 30,927.08 the extended references.
3.2 Support
Beneath the settle sit the 38.2 percent retracement from the 13-week high at 30,037.12 and the 38.2 percent retracement from the four-week low at 30,032.26, with the Pivot Point at 29,987.67 next. The published target price at 29,802.78, Pivot S1 at 29,778.58 and one standard deviation support at 29,706.83 follow, then Thursday's 29,622.50 low. The 3-10 day crossover stall level at 29,569.68, the 50 percent retracement of the 13-week range at 29,549.25 and two standard deviations support at 29,525.86 come next, with Pivot S2 at 29,413.42, three standard deviations support at 29,386.99 and Pivot S3 at 29,204.33 the extended references.
4. Macro Drivers
4.1 Mag7 Earnings and AI Capex Cycle
The feed's Europe and Asia wraps described a deepening selloff in artificial-intelligence shares overnight, with the Europe wrap citing a 1.1 percent decline in Nasdaq-100 futures at that stage after disclosures from an artificial-intelligence model developer. At 11:10 AM ET the feed carried the leading graphics-chip maker's chief executive saying a cloud computing provider does not require financial backing from the chip maker and that the provider's cost of capital is declining, and the US market wrap described stocks recovering as investors reassessed concerns about the sustainability of the artificial-intelligence boom.
4.2 Semiconductor Cycle and Tech Sector Rotation
The semiconductor index closed at 11,581.22, down 0.88 percent, after opening at 11,280.89 and trading as low as 11,171.53, so it closed 409.69 points above its low. The Taiwanese chipmaker reported at 2:00 AM ET, as the calendar lists it, and the feed's 4:18 AM ET Europe sentiment item cited its earnings as a positive. At 10:51 AM ET the feed carried a press report that the German government will collaborate with the leading graphics-chip maker on artificial intelligence. A market sentiment gauge was carried at 23 out of 100 at 10:17 AM ET, described as extreme fear.
4.3 Fed Policy and Real Yields (Duration Sensitivity)
The ten-year yield index traded between 5.04 and 5.11 percent and closed at 5.09 percent against 5.19 percent on Wednesday, and the thirty-year index closed at 5.42 percent against 5.52 percent. Producer prices printed 1.3 percent for the month against a 0.6 percent forecast and core producer prices 0.7 percent against 0.3 percent, per the news feed at 8:30 AM ET, yet long-end yields fell; a feed headline at 12:00 PM ET said the data failed to revive rate-increase bets. No inflation-protected yield series was captured, so real yields are not measured here.
At 4:16 AM ET the feed carried investment-bank commentary expecting a third Federal Reserve increase in March 2027, and after the close a regional Federal Reserve president's remarks were carried at 4:46 PM ET and 4:48 PM ET. The next policy decision is listed for October 28, 2026, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed.
4.4 Geopolitical Backdrop
The news feed carried at 1:14 PM ET a US statement that a civilian vessel was hit by a projectile from Iran's revolutionary guard and that a civilian container vessel sank while being towed to shore, and at 4:43 PM ET and 4:44 PM ET Pentagon statements on a rebalancing of the NATO alliance. These are statements carried by the news feed rather than confirmed events, and no causal link to the index is asserted. November WTI crude settled at 97.97, up 3.03 percent.
4.5 Cross-Asset and Volatility
The S&P 500 cash index closed at 7,744.06, up 0.33 percent, the Dow industrials at 52,177.69, up 1.08 percent, and the NYSE composite at 24,066.65, up 0.84 percent, so the Nasdaq-100 cash index, down 0.05 percent, lagged the broader market. The volatility index closed at 16.46 against 16.87, while the Nasdaq-100 volatility index rose to 22.89 from 22.70 and the volatility-of-volatility index eased to 92.57 from 94.45. The dollar index closed at 102.00, down 0.55, and gold rose 1.51 percent.
4.6 Institutional Positioning
No weekly positioning report was captured. Open interest on the December contract is shown at 281,712 on Wednesday's 2026-10-14 row, up from 278,674 on Tuesday's 2026-10-13 row; Thursday's open interest had not been reported at the time of capture. Thursday's volume was 803,966 contracts against Wednesday's revised 749,259. The measured closing basis was 208.16 points, the December settlement of 30,143.75 less the 29,935.59 cash close from the same provider's daily record, against 231.93 on Wednesday.
5. QQQ Options Flow Context (Proxy)
This review uses the QQQ fund as the proxy for the positioning data available, alongside the index levels published in the same desk note. The desk note read for this section is the 5:28 PM ET edition for Thursday, read at 9:05 PM ET. Its reference prices are the prior session's closes, not Thursday's: NDX 29,950 equals Wednesday's 29,950.82 cash close and QQQ 728 sits 0.95 beneath the fund's 728.95 Wednesday close in the provider's record. Every index level below is read against Thursday's 29,935.59 cash close.
On the Nasdaq-100 index the modeled volatility threshold sits at NDX 30,330, the modeled gamma-flip level at NDX 30,100, the largest gamma concentration at NDX 29,475 and the primary put side support base at NDX 29,500. The close sits 394.41 points beneath the threshold, 164.41 points beneath the flip level and 460.59 points above the largest concentration. Gamma tilt reads 0.897 and gamma notional minus 4.604 million dollars, so index gamma is negative in aggregate. The note's call side field for the index reads 29,475, beneath its own put side field of 29,500, so that field is treated as low-confidence. The note's key index strikes are 29,475, 30,000, 29,500 and 31,000.
On the QQQ proxy the primary call side ceiling sits at 760, the largest gamma concentration at 740, the modeled gamma-flip level at 738, the modeled volatility threshold at 734 and the primary put side support base at 725. The fund's gamma tilt reads 0.637 and gamma notional minus 1.036 billion dollars. The QQQ console, read at about 9:06 PM ET and marked as updated 2026-10-15, shows call gamma of minus 747.88 million against put gamma of minus 1.72 billion, one-month implied volatility of 20.16 percent against realised volatility of 17.00 percent, an implied-volatility rank of 35.82 percent and a put-to-call open-interest ratio of 1.41. Its current-price field is a post-close indicative quote, and its high and low volatility point fields, which read inverted at 740 and 510, are excluded.
At the measured closing basis of 208.16 points, the December settlement of 30,143.75 less the 29,935.59 cash close, the modeled volatility threshold at NDX 30,330 corresponds to 30,538.16 on the December contract, the modeled gamma-flip level at NDX 30,100 to 30,308.16, the put side support base at NDX 29,500 to 29,708.16 and the largest concentration at NDX 29,475 to 29,683.16. These conversions are this review's, not the source's.
The narrative said Nasdaq index options flow showed about minus 9 billion dollars of cumulative delta, driven mainly by call selling, while implied-volatility compression helped the index reclaim its largest gamma concentration at 29,475. It said single-stock options traders sold puts and bought calls in artificial-intelligence names ahead of earnings, and that semiconductors lagged as the equal-weighted S&P 500 fund rose 1.4 percent. Friday is monthly options expiration, per the positioning note, unconfirmed.
In this review's interpretation, drawn from the index model and the QQQ fund proxy, both model outputs, a cash close beneath the flip level, with negative gamma on both the index and the fund, describes positioning that is less likely to dampen moves; it is a damping read with no direction. The setup in section 8 sells the 30,330 to 30,390 band, just above the 30,308.16 conversion of the flip level, with the stop at 30,600 above the 30,538.16 conversion of the threshold.
6. Forecast
6.1 Night Session (6:00 PM ET Thursday to 3:00 AM ET Friday, Globex and Asia)
Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET with the December contract quoted at 30,117.50 at 6:34 PM ET, 26.25 beneath the settle. The Bank of England governor is listed at 10:00 PM ET and a European Central Bank board member at 10:30 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The Federal Reserve Chair's discussion with the International Monetary Fund's managing director is scheduled for 11:30 PM ET, as the calendar lists it. Bias neutral to lower beneath Pivot R1 at 30,352.83, expected Globex band roughly 29,850 to 30,350 absent a headline shock.
6.2 London Session (3:00 AM to 8:00 AM ET Friday)
Final euro-area consumer prices are listed at 5:00 AM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Bias neutral to lower, expected band roughly 29,780 to 30,400, with the 30,330 to 30,390 band the first meaningful resistance and the Pivot Point at 29,987.67 the first meaningful support.
6.3 Morning Session (9:30 AM to 12:00 PM ET Friday, RTH Open)
Import prices for September print at 8:30 AM ET and industrial production at 9:15 AM ET, both as the calendar lists them, before the cash open at 9:30 AM ET. Expected band roughly 29,700 to 30,580, with one standard deviation resistance at 30,580.67 just above its top and one standard deviation support at 29,706.83 just above its bottom.
6.4 Afternoon Session (12:00 PM to 4:00 PM ET Friday)
The cash session closes at 4:00 PM ET, and a Friday close carries two days of headline exposure into the Sunday reopen. Expected band roughly 29,620 to 30,640.
6.5 Night Session Forward (6:00 PM ET Sunday)
Globex reopens at 6:00 PM ET on Sunday, October 18, 2026, after two days of headline exposure. The weekend gap references are Pivot R1 at 30,352.83 above and Pivot S1 at 29,778.58 beneath. A streaming company reports at 4:01 PM ET on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, as the calendar lists it.
6.6 Expected Range (Friday Full Session)
Low-range scenario: 29,850 to 30,350; Mid-range scenario (most likely): 29,700 to 30,580; High-range scenario: 29,660 to 30,620.
6.7 Most Likely Path
In this review's analyst judgment the most probable path holds the contract between one standard deviation support at 29,706.83 and one standard deviation resistance at 30,580.67, with artificial-intelligence headlines and long-end yields deciding the side. A rally toward Pivot R1 at 30,352.83 that stalls beneath one standard deviation resistance is weighted above a sustained break higher, because Thursday printed a lower high and a lower low for a fourth consecutive lower settle, the settle sits beneath the 5-day through 50-day settlement averages, negative direction leads on the 9-day and 14-day directional systems and the composite reads 8 percent sell with direction described as weakening.
The alternative that would invalidate this reading is a continuation of Thursday's afternoon recovery that carries the contract through Pivot R2 at 30,561.92 and one standard deviation resistance, which would put the 5-day settlement average at 30,625.00 in play. The settle at 90.8 percent of a range with a 521.25 point recovery from the low is the evidence against the short reading.
7. Friday Economic Calendar
Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET on Thursday. A Federal Reserve bank president spoke at 4:30 PM ET, per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The Bank of England governor is listed at 10:00 PM ET and a European Central Bank board member at 10:30 PM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. The Federal Reserve Chair's discussion with the International Monetary Fund's managing director is scheduled at 11:30 PM ET, as the calendar lists it.
On Friday, the Bank of Canada governor is listed at 12:15 AM ET and final euro-area consumer prices at 5:00 AM ET, both per the news-feed calendar and unconfirmed. Import prices for September print at 8:30 AM ET on Friday, October 16, 2026, and industrial production at 9:15 AM ET on Friday, October 16, 2026, both as the calendar lists them. 8. Primary Trade Setup
Direction: Short
Rationale: Thursday printed a lower high and a lower low for a fourth consecutive lower settle, the settle sits beneath the 5-day through 50-day settlement averages, negative direction leads on the 9-day and 14-day directional systems, and the composite reads 8 percent sell with direction described as weakening; a rally into Pivot R1 at 30,352.83 and the 50 percent retracement at 30,334.75 offers a short with a defined risk point above one standard deviation resistance at 30,580.67. The settle finished at 90.8 percent of the range after a 521.25 point recovery from the low, so the setup is an analyst judgment that the recovery stalls beneath Pivot R2, not a measured edge.
Entry Zone: 30,330 to 30,390
Stop Loss: 30,600 (above Pivot R2 at 30,561.92 and one standard deviation resistance at 30,580.67)
Target 1 (T1): 30,120 (23.75 beneath Thursday's 30,143.75 settle)
Target 2 (T2): 29,880 (107.67 beneath the Pivot Point at 29,987.67)
Target 3 (T3, extended): 29,640 (17.50 above Thursday's 29,622.50 low)
Risk-to-Reward: Approximately 1:1 to T1, 1:2 to T2, 1:3 to T3
Invalidation: A settle above one standard deviation resistance at 30,580.67 negates the thesis. Short of that, the edge is removed by acceptance above the entry band and not by a touch, defined as two consecutive 30-minute closes above 30,390.
Macro override: A soft import-price print that extends the decline in long-end yields, or a further recovery in chip shares, would invalidate the short in real time. In that scenario a move through the 30,600 stop removes the setup, and the 5-day settlement average at 30,625.00 and two standard deviations resistance at 30,761.64 become the references within one 14-day average true range of 477.95 points.
Sources and methodology
This outlook is built from our session review of the December E-mini Nasdaq-100 contract, the December ’26 contract, prepared after Thursday's close on October 15, 2026 for the Friday, October 16, 2026 session. Thursday's open, high, low and settle come from the provider's daily settlement record for the December contract, the 2026-10-15 row, and match the chart's completed daily bar. Thursday's completed extremes are also the inputs behind the published pivot ladder: Pivot R3 at 30,927.08 less Pivot S3 at 29,204.33, divided by three, and Pivot R2 at 30,561.92 less Pivot S2 at 29,413.42, divided by two, both return 574.25, and three times the 29,987.67 Pivot Point less the settle gives 59,819.26, 0.01 from the 59,819.25 of the solved pair of 30,196.75 and 29,622.50. The chart's 30-minute bars for the session, from the 6:00 PM ET Wednesday bar through the 4:30 PM ET Thursday bar, reproduce the same extremes; they place the low in the 9:30 AM ET bar and the high in the 3:30 PM ET bar, and every timed statement about Thursday in this article rests on them. Only those figures and the review's statements are used to grade Thursday's card. Globex reopened at 6:00 PM ET Thursday, so the day open, high and low on the provider's overview belong to the Friday session.
The moving averages were computed from the provider's 259-session daily settlement series; the oscillators are cited as published for the Friday session, read after the 6:00 PM ET reopen. Volume and open interest come from the provider's daily record: the 2026-10-15 row reads 803,966 contracts with open interest not yet reported, and the 2026-10-14 row now reads 749,259 contracts and open interest of 281,712, where Thursday's outlook carried 731,907 for Wednesday. The 2026-10-13 row reads open interest of 278,674. The desk note used is the 5:28 PM ET Thursday edition, with Wednesday's closes in its reference column; every Nasdaq futures equivalent is the review's conversion at the 208.16 point measured basis, the December settlement less the cash close from the same provider's daily record, and Wednesday's 231.93 basis is the figure carried in Thursday's outlook. The QQQ fund is a proxy read alongside the index levels. The reading that positioning is less likely to dampen moves is the review's interpretation from the index model and that proxy, both model outputs, and it is a damping read with no direction; the fund console, marked as updated 2026-10-15, was read at about 9:06 PM ET, and its current-price field and its inverted high and low volatility point fields are excluded. The dollar index percentage and the open-interest change are computed. Scenario ranges are analyst judgment, and items marked unconfirmed come from the news-feed calendar, the news feed, the desk note or the positioning note.
